In rats, mate infusion reduced oxidative stress in the kidneys and improved kidney filtration after potassium dichromate administration.

Aim of the study: Chimarrão is a typical beverage made from the infusion of dried and ground leaves and stems of Ilex paraguariensis (popularly known as Yerba mate or mate herb) which is widely consumed in parts of South America. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of the chimarrão against nephrotoxicity and oxidative stress induced by the potassium dichromate (PD) salt in male Wistar rats.

Results: Potassium dichromate induced oxidative stress in the kidneys and reduced GFR. Treatment with chimarrão during the 15 days prior to PD injection reduced PD salt-mediated oxidative stress. Further, treatment with post-injection chimarrão to PD-administered rats improved the GFR. Our findings support that the use of the chimarrão beverage may be considered as an important nephroprotective substance.

In rats, mate reduced weight gain and body fat and improved selected indicators of liver metabolism.

Aim of the study: Ilex paraguariensis (yerba mate) has a beneficial effect in the management of obesity. Here, we studied the effects of yerba mate on hypothalamic changes in leptin and insulin signalling, oxidative stress and liver morphology and metabolism in postnatal early overfeeding (EO) Wistar rats.

Results: In the liver, yerba mate treatment normalized antioxidant enzyme activities and, consequently, decreased lipid peroxidation, determined by malondialdehyde content. In addition, the steatosis level and the liver triglyceride content were also restored. Thus, for the first time, yerba mate was demonstrated to increase antioxidant defences and improve liver metabolism in adult rats that were overfed during lactation, possibly through improvements in the hypothalamic action of insulin. These findings may be important for the treatment of obesity-related disorders.

In rats, mate extract helped preserve physical activity and limited some effects of chronic stress in the brain.

Aim of the study: Positive influence of yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis) on human health issues has been attributed to its frequent consumption in South American countries and is assumed to be due to its high content of antioxidant compounds, including chlorogenic acid (CGA); however, hard evidence about its positive effects under chronic stress conditions is still required.

Results: Stressed animals also augmented the expression/localization pattern of the tumor necrosis factor alpha in the striatum and the expression of the glial fibrillary acidic protein in the hippocampus (stratum moleculare) and cortex, whereas IpE and CGA reduced the expression of these molecules. In turn, CGA exhibited only moderate protective effects on all markers analyzed. Our findings support a protective role of IpE against CRS, which may be related to the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of its compounds. Since CGA was unable to prevent all the alterations induced by CRS, it is concluded that the protective properties of the whole extract of Ilex paraguariensis are the result of the combined effects of all its natural antioxidant compounds, and not only of the properties of CGA.

In a small study of active women, mate increased fat burning during exercise and reduced perceived hunger.

Aim of the study: Yerba Maté (YM), has become a popular herb ingested for enhancing metabolic health and weight-loss outcomes. No studies have tested the combined metabolic, satiety, and psychomotor effects of YM during exercise.

Results: Whereas, POMS measures of focus, energy, and concentration were all increased (p < 0.05). There was no significant time-effect for any of the measured variables, nor was there any interaction effects between YM treatment and time. Combining YM intake with prolonged exercise at targeted "fat-loss"' intensities augments FAO and improves measures of satiety and mood state. Such positive combined metabolic, satiety, and psychomotor effects may provide an important role for designing future fat and weight-loss lifestyle interventions.

In laboratory studies, an aqueous extract of mate inhibited the growth of most of the bacteria tested.

Aim of the study: The stems and leaves of Ilex paraguariensis are popularly used for tea infusions in South America and the Middle East. The health benefits have been previously studied, revealing anti-mutagenic, anti-oxidant, hepatoprotective, hypocholesteremic and glycemic improvement. Limited research was performed on the antibacterial activity of the aqueous extract of Yerba Mate on standard and clinical isolates of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

Results: An antibacterial activity was observed against most of tested strains, with a greater activity against Gram-positive bacteria. MIC and MBC values ranged between 0.468 mg/mL and 15 mg/mL of aqueous extract of Yerba Mate. The aqueous extract of the stems and leaves of Ilex paraguariensis extracted at 70°C showed a significant antibacterial activity. There was no correlation found between the different molecular resistance profiles and the antibacterial activity range.

In mice, mate extract showed antidepressant effects and protective effects on brain tissue in preclinical studies.

Aim of the study: Ilex paraguariensis St. Hilaire (Aquifoliaceae) is a typical plant from South America.

Results: This effect coincides with the neuroprotective effect, given that glutamate toxicity (10 mmol/l) did not decrease cell viability in hippocampal or cortical slices from IpHE-treated mice. The chromatographic profile of IpHE showed the presence of the methylxanthines caffeine and theobromine. Administration of methylxanthines (2.7 µg/kg) in mice produced an antidepressant-like effect, but not neuroprotection. We suggest that methylxanthines are at least in part responsible for the antidepressant-like effect of IpHE; further studies are necessary to determine the biological compounds responsible for the neuroprotective effect.

In a yeast model, mate and rutin increased survival after irradiation and reduced DNA damage.

Aim of the study: DNA repair pathways, cell cycle checkpoints, and redox protection systems are essential factors for securing genomic stability. The aim of the present study was to analyze the effect of Ilex paraguariensis (Ip) infusion and one of its polyphenolic components rutin on cellular and molecular damage induced by ionizing radiation.

Results: Upon these concomitant treatments, mutation and DSB frequency decreased significantly. In the mutant strain deficient in MEC1, a significant increase in γ sensitivity and a low effect of rutin on γ-induced chromosomal fragmentation was observed. Results were interpreted in the framework of a model of interaction between radiation-induced free radicals, DNA repair pathways, and checkpoint controls, where the DNA damage that induced activation of MEC1 nodal point of the network could be modulated by Ip components including rutin. Furthermore, ionizing radiation-induced redox cascades can be interrupted by rutin potential and other protectors contained in Ip.

A review suggests that yerba mate may have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and may support weight management and heart health.

Aim of the study: The leaves of Ilex paraguariensis, known as Yerba Mate (YM), have been traditionally consumed as an infusion in South America. Drawing on research from major scientific databases (PubMed, ScienceDirect, ACS, and Web of Science), this review provides an overview of YM's phytochemical composition, health effects, safety, and food applications.

Results: Evidence supports several health benefits of YM, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-obesity, and cardioprotective properties, along with potential prebiotic effects. However, safety concerns exist, particularly the possible formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) during traditional drying processes. Beyond its use as a beverage, YM shows strong potential in the food industry for applications in functional foods, nutraceuticals, and natural preservatives. In conclusion, YM represents a promising source of functional ingredients with broad potential for health-oriented and culinary applications.
