Type 2 diabetes — can vegetables reverse it instead of pills?

Sources: 6 · Article: 8 432 characters

Ewa Dąbrowska links type 2 diabetes to insulin resistance and writes that fasting may improve insulin sensitivity and reverse the disease.

  • Ewa Dąbrowska attributes this improvement in part to reductions in visceral fat and fatty deposits in organs, and to the possible restoration of pancreatic function.
  • She presents this as a possibility, not a certain outcome for everyone: after one week of fasting, glucose levels normalized in more than 80% of patients.

Insulin resistance is at the root of type 2 diabetes, and fasting may improve the cells’ sensitivity to insulin.

„As a result, the cells become more sensitive to insulin. This is important because insulin resistance is at the root of many metabolic diseases: type 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, lipid disorders, and gout. Therefore, treating one of these diseases may also improve the others.”W efekcie poprawia się wrażliwość komórek na insulinę, co jest kluczowe, ponieważ insulinooporność leży u podstaw wielu chorób metabolicznych: cukrzycy typu 2, miażdżycy, nadciśnienia, zaburzeń lipidowych czy dny moczanowej. Dlatego leczenie jednej z tych chorób może przynieść poprawę także w innych.

Fasting may improve insulin sensitivity, restore pancreatic function, and lead to the reversal of diabetes.

„A fruit-and-vegetable fast reduces visceral fat and fatty deposits in organs, improving insulin sensitivity. It may also restore pancreatic function and lead to the reversal of the disease. In addition, fasting may reduce, and sometimes even reverse, diabetic complications: polyneuropathy (nerve damage), nephropathy (kidney damage), angiopathy (blood vessel damage, e.g.”Post warzywno-owocowy, redukując tłuszcz trzewny i stłuszczenie narządów, poprawia wrażliwość na insulinę.

A meta-analysis found that healthy dietary patterns, including those based on vegetables, fruit, and legumes, were associated with a lower incidence of type 2 diabetes.

Aim of the study: Background: Different methodological approaches to constructing dietary patterns and differences in their composition limit conclusions about healthy dietary patterns for diabetes prevention. Objective: We summarized evidence from prospective studies that examined associations between dietary patterns and type 2 diabetes, taking different methodological approaches into account. Methods: A literature search (MEDLINE and Web of Science) identified prospective studies (cohorts or trials) linking dietary patterns with diabetes incidence in participants who did not have diabetes and were apparently healthy.

Results: These patterns were characterized by high intakes of refined grains, sugar-sweetened soft drinks, and processed meat, and all were significantly associated with diabetes risk. Conclusions: Our meta-analysis suggests that diets based on the Mediterranean diet, DASH, and AHEI have strong potential for preventing diabetes, although they differ in some specific components. Exploratory dietary patterns were grouped according to food groups that they had in common and were significantly associated with diabetes risk, even though the evidence linking individual foods to diabetes was limited. However, these remain population-specific observations. Consistent positive associations with diabetes risk were observed for 3 RRR patterns.

In people with type 2 diabetes, the DASH4D diet lowered average glucose levels and increased the time glucose remained within the target range.

Aim of the study: The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet is rich in foods (fruit, vegetables, whole grains) that may reduce hyperglycemia and glucose variability.

Results: In analyses of secondary outcomes, glucose standard deviation and time spent with hyperglycemia (glucose >180 mg dl-1 and >250 mg dl-1) were lower on the DASH4D diet, while time spent with hypoglycemia (glucose <70 mg dl-1 and <54 mg dl-1) was similar across diets. There were no serious adverse events related to continuous glucose monitoring or the study diets. These results suggest that the DASH4D diet is a promising nutritional approach for substantially improving glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes. ClinicalTrials.gov registration: NCT04286555.
