Sources: 14 · Article: 19 261 characters

Jerzy Zięba claims that intravenous vitamin C is not included in official guidelines for COVID-19 and sepsis, and that doctors reject requests to use it.

  • He cites a recommendation that doctors investigate the possible use of vitamin C for viral infections, as well as publications and analyses pointing to its effectiveness.
  • Thomas E. Levy believes doctors should consider treatment with vitamin C, hydrocortisone, and thiamine, and describes the possibility of taking legal action if treatment is refused.

What the authors write

Jerzy Zięba

Intravenous vitamin C is not included in official guidelines for COVID-19 and sepsis, and doctors reject requests to use such protocols.

„Vitamin C is not currently included in official guidelines for doctors on treating COVID-19 and sepsis. All methods and protocols for using vitamin C to treat COVID-19 and sepsis have not been accepted by the Polish medical community and are not used. Reports about their effectiveness have not yet gained the support of scientists and practitioners in Poland. Attempts by patients to persuade doctors to use vitamin C-based treatment protocols are rejected by doctors.”Witamina C nie znajduje się obecnie w oficjalnych wytycznych dla lekarzy na temat leczenia COVID-19 i sepsy.
Andrzej Frydrychowski

Andrzej Frydrychowski describes past cases of treatment with intravenous vitamin C and claims that it was set aside in favor of more expensive drugs.

„Yes, because vitamin C was used and permitted in those years. Then much more expensive antibiotics and other drugs came to the fore. Vitamin C was pushed aside because it was too effective and too cheap. There are tens of thousands of publications about this vitamin, including many from the last few years.”Owszem, ponieważ w tamtych latach witamina C była stosowana i dozwolona. Potem do głosu doszły dużo droższe antybiotyki i inne leki.

Jerzy Zięba claims that no studies have been conducted in Poland to determine the effectiveness of the methods he describes, and that scientists abroad are studying intravenous vitamin C.

„At the time when the information I presented was under the greatest criticism, nobody in Poland had conducted studies that would constructively and definitively assess the methods I presented on the basis of findings and results. Numerous articles insulting me took their place. This has still not happened.”W czasie największej krytyki zaprezentowanych przeze mnie informacji nikt w Polsce nie przeprowadził badań, które w sposób konstruktywny, oparty na wynikach i rezultatach ostatecznie rozstrzygnęłyby przedstawione przeze mnie metody. Ich miejsce zajęły liczne artykułu obrażające mnie. Nie stało się to do dziś.
Jerzy Zięba

Jerzy Zięba cites a recommendation that doctors investigate the possible use of supplemental vitamin C to fight viral infections.

„To effectively fight the new SARS-CoV-2 virus, doctors should investigate readily available pharmaceutical and nutritional therapies with proven antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunosuppressive properties. Supplemental vitamin C may also provide additional benefits in preventing viral infections, shorten the course of the disease, and reduce complications of the disease — source: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7553131/.”Aby skutecznie walczyć z nowym wirusem SARS-CoV-2, lekarze powinni zbadać łatwo dostępne farmaceutyczne i odżywcze środki terapeutyczne o udowodnionych właściwościach przeciwutleniających, przeciwzapalnych i immunosupresyjnych.

Jerzy Zięba describes intravenous vitamin C being given to nine people with advanced pancreatic cancer; their disease did not progress for six months after the treatment.

„This treatment method was used in 9 patients with advanced pancreatic tumors. While they were receiving chemotherapy, they were also given intravenous vitamin C for a month. Their disease did not progress in their bodies during the six months after the treatment ended. We need more experiments and studies like this, as well as publications.”Tę metodę leczenia zastosowano u 9 pacjentów z zaawansowanym guzem trzustki.

Jerzy Zięba points out that an article about COVID-19 described high-dose intravenous vitamin C as promising, although it had not been incorporated into medical procedures.

„From the article, you will learn that vitamin C does not cure the disease, but you will also learn that high-dose intravenous vitamin C is promising for treating COVID-19. Does that tell you anything? The article is dated October 13, 2020. It was published 7 months after I presented you, in March, with the information I had gathered about COVID-19 treatments and substances that doctors believed should be used in medical procedures.”Z artykułu dowiecie się, że witamina C nie leczy, jak również dowiecie się, że wysokie dawki witaminy C podawane dożylnie są obiecujące w leczeniu COVID-19. Coś Wam to mówi?

Jerzy Zięba notes that positions on using vitamin C for COVID-19 are contradictory, and claims there are publications and analyses pointing to its effectiveness.

„In the article dated October 13, 2020, you will read that there are reports of vitamin C being used in COVID-19 therapies. In the one dated October 19, you will read that this is a myth and that there is no evidence that high doses of vitamin C can help prevent or treat coronavirus.”W tym z 13 października 2020 roku przeczytacie, że są doniesienia na temat witaminy C wykorzystywanej w terapiach przy COVID-19.
Thomas E. Levy

Thomas E. Levy believes doctors should consider vitamin C therapy with hydrocortisone and thiamine, and that treatment should be refused only if it is expensive, toxic, or questionably effective.

„Effective When a treatment is very expensive, significantly toxic, and/or questionably effective, there may be a legitimate medicolegal argument for withholding it. NONE of these considerations apply to Dr. Marik’s cocktail of vitamin C, hydrocortisone, and thiamine.”Effective When a treatment is very expensive, significantly toxic, and/or questionably effective, a legitimate medicolegal argument can be made to withhold such a treatment. NONE of these considerations apply to Dr. Marik’s cocktail of vitamin C, hydrocortisone, and thiamine.
Thomas E. Levy

Thomas E. Levy urges people to demand that the Thomas E. Levy protocol be used for a patient with sepsis and describes the possibility of taking legal action if it is refused.

„Bottom line: If you have a family member dying of sepsis in an intensive care unit, demand that Dr. Marik’s protocol be started immediately. If you are denied this option, make sure your physician understands that immediate legal action to initiate the therapy will follow, and that the death of your loved one will ensure the initiation of a malpractice suit against him or her.”Bottom line: If you have a family member dying of sepsis on an intensive care unit, demand that Dr. Marik’s protocol be immediately instituted. A review found that intravenous vitamin C may improve some cancer treatment outcomes and ease chemotherapy symptoms, but the evidence is limited.

Aim of the study: Intravenous vitamin C (IVC) is a contentious adjunctive cancer therapy, widely used in naturopathic and integrative oncology settings. We conducted a systematic review of human interventional and observational studies assessing IVC for use in cancer patients.

Results: Of 897 records, a total of 39 reports of 37 studies were included: 2 randomized controlled trials (RCTs), 15 uncontrolled trials, 6 observational studies, and 14 case reports. IVC dosing ranged from 1 g to more than 200 g ascorbic acid per infusion, typically administered 2 to 3 times weekly. IVC does not appear to increase toxicity or interfere with the antitumor effects of gemcitabine/erlotinib therapy or paclitaxel and carboplatin. Based on 1 RCT and data from uncontrolled human trials, IVC may improve time to relapse and possibly enhance reductions in tumor mass and improve survival in combination with chemotherapy. IVC may improve quality of life, physical function, and toxicities associated with chemotherapy, including fatigue, nausea, insomnia, constipation, and depression. Case reports document several instances of tumor regression and long-term disease-free survival associated with use of IVC. There is limited high-quality clinical evidence on the safety and effectiveness of IVC.

A review of studies found improved neutrophil function after intravenous vitamin C in two of three studies that assessed their migration.

Aim of the study: Vitamin C is known to support immune function and is accumulated by neutrophils to millimolar intracellular concentrations, suggesting an important role for the vitamin in these cells. In this review, the effects of vitamin C, as a mono- or multi-supplement therapy, on neutrophil function were assessed by conducting a systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs).

Results: Overall, 44% of the RCTs assessed in this review showed effects of vitamin C supplementation on neutrophil functions. However, the studies were very heterogeneous, comprising different participant cohorts and different dosing regimens. There were also a number of limitations inherent in the design of many of these RCTs. Future RCTs should incorporate prescreening of potential participants for low vitamin C status or utilize cohorts known to have low vitamin status, such as hospitalized patients, and should also comprise appropriate vitamin C dosing for the cohort under investigation.

In a small study of people with metastatic pancreatic cancer, adding intravenous vitamin C to chemotherapy was associated with longer survival and progression-free time.

Aim of the study: Patients with metastatic pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) have poor 5-year survival. Pharmacological ascorbate (P-AscH-, high dose, intravenous vitamin C) has shown promise as an adjunct to chemotherapy. We hypothesized that adding P-AscH- to gemcitabine and nab-paclitaxel would increase survival in patients with metastatic PDAC.

Results: Intravenous P-AscH- increased serum ascorbate levels from micromolar to millimolar levels. P-AscH- added to gemcitabine + nab-paclitaxel (ASC) increased overall survival to 16 months compared with 8.3 months with gemcitabine + nab-paclitaxel (SOC) (HR = 0.46; 90 % CI 0.23, 0.92; p = 0.030). Median progression-free survival was 6.2 (ASC) vs. 3.9 months (SOC) (HR = 0.43; 90 % CI 0.20, 0.92; p = 0.029). Adding P-AscH- did not negatively affect quality of life or increase the frequency or severity of adverse events. P-AscH- infusions of 75 g three times weekly in patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer prolong overall and progression-free survival without detriment to quality of life or added toxicity (ClinicalTrials.gov number NCT02905578).

In a retrospective study, a combination of intravenous vitamin C, hydrocortisone, and thiamine was associated with lower mortality and shorter use of drugs to raise blood pressure.

Aim of the study: The global burden of sepsis is estimated as 15 to 19 million cases annually, with a mortality rate approaching 60% in low-income countries.

Results: There were 47 patients in both the treatment and control groups, with no significant differences in baseline characteristics between the two groups. Hospital mortality was 8.5% (4 of 47) in the treatment group compared with 40.4% (19 of 47) in the control group (P < .001). The propensity-adjusted odds of mortality in patients treated with the vitamin C protocol was 0.13 (95% CI, 0.04-0.48; P = .002). The Sepsis-Related Organ Failure Assessment score decreased in all patients in the treatment group, with none developing progressive organ failure. All patients in the treatment group were weaned off vasopressors, a mean of 18.3 ± 9.8 h after starting treatment with the vitamin C protocol. The mean duration of vasopressor use was 54.9 ± 28.4 h in the control group (P < .001).

In a study following hysterectomy, intravenous vitamin C reduced bleeding during surgery.

Aim of the study: Previous studies mentioned the beneficial effects of vitamin C on hemorrhage and wound healing. We evaluated the effects of vitamin C on hemorrhage, hemoglobin concentration, and wound complications in total abdominal hysterectomy.

Results: The mean age of the participants was 37.8 ± 4.8 years, with a mean preoperative plasma vitamin C concentration of 5.07 ± 2.1 mg/dL, close to subclinical deficiency. The baseline characteristics of both groups were the same. The hemorrhage volume was slightly higher in the control group (345.2 ± 31.8 ml vs. 388.1 ± 28.3 ml, P < 0.001). Intravenous vitamin C administration had a positive effect on reducing hemorrhage during total abdominal hysterectomy.

In a study of patients with persistent pain after chikungunya, an infusion of vitamin C with hydrogen peroxide was associated with less pain immediately after the procedure.

Aim of the study: Chikungunya is a viral illness characterized by severe joint pain, which may persist for months to years. There is no effective treatment for this disease.

Results: We treated 56 patients with moderate to severe persistent pain with a single infusion of ascorbic acid ranging from 25-50 grams and hydrogen peroxide (3 cc of a 3% solution) from July to October 2014. Patients were asked about their pain using the Verbal Numerical Rating Scale-11 immediately before and after treatment. The mean pain score before and after treatment was 8 and 2 respectively (60%) (p < 0.001); and 5 patients (9%) had a pain score of 0. The use of intravenous ascorbic acid and hydrogen peroxide resulted in a statistically significant reduction in pain in patients with moderate to severe pain from the Chikungunya virus immediately after treatment.

Vitamin C infusion improved measures of cerebrovascular reactivity in middle-aged and older adults, but not in young adults.

Aim of the study: Cerebrovascular endothelial function can be assessed by measuring the shear-mediated dilation or cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) of the internal carotid artery (ICA) in response to transient hypercapnia (30 s). ICA CVR is blunted with aging; however, it is not known whether age-related reductions in ICA CVR are influenced by antioxidant-responsive mechanisms.

Results: The primary analytic sample included nine Y adults (25 ± 2 years) and nineteen (65 ± 6 years) MA/O adults, with analyzable data varying by outcome. ICA CVR was measured using high-resolution duplex ultrasound, and MCA CVR was measured using transcranial Doppler ultrasound. AA infusion improved ICA CVR and MCA CVR in MA/O adults but had no effect in Y adults. These findings suggest that age-related impairments in cerebrovascular function may be partly attributable to mechanisms responsive to acute, supraphysiological AA administration.
