The conclusions about medicines containing thyme herb alone are based on long-standing traditional use, because evidence from clinical trials is insufficient.

„The HMPC’s conclusions on using these medicines containing thyme herb for productive cough are based on their “traditional use”. This means that although evidence from clinical trials is insufficient, the effectiveness of these herbal medicines is considered plausible, and there is evidence that they have been used safely in this way for at least 30 years (including at least 15 years in the EU).”Ustalenia HMPC dotyczące stosowania tych leków zawierających ziele tymianku w kaszlu produktywnym opierają się na ich „tradycyjnym stosowaniu”.

A study comparing thyme preparations with bromhexine did not allow a clear conclusion because of its limitations.

„Although no significant differences were observed between thyme herb and bromhexine in the treatment of cough, the study had limitations, including a small number of patients and a lack of detailed information about the thyme herb preparations. For this reason, no clear conclusions can be drawn.”Chociaż nie obserwowano istotnych różnic między zielem tymianku a bromheksyną w leczeniu kaszlu, badanie zawierało niedociągnięcia, takie jak mała liczba pacjentów oraz brak szczegółowych informacji dotyczących przetworów z ziela tymianku. Z tego powodu nie można wyciągnąć jednoznacznych wniosków.

Thyme medicines may contain dried and crushed leaves and flowers, juice, or an extract—not just the kitchen spice.

„The HMPC’s conclusions apply only to preparations made from thyme herb by drying and crushing (reducing to small particles) the leaves and flowers, pressing juice from the leaves and flowers, or producing a dry, liquid, or thick extract.”Ustalenia HMPC dotyczą jedynie przetworów, które są uzyskiwane z ziela tymianku przez suszenie i rozdrabnianie (zmniejszając do drobnych cząstek) liści i kwiatów, przez wyciskanie soku z liści i kwiatów albo w postaci wyciągu suchego, płynnego lub gęstego.

Thyme extract and thymol are ingredients in tablets, drops, and expectorant and cough syrups.

„Thyme extract and thymol are ingredients in many lozenges, drops, and expectorant and cough syrups. Along with essential oil, the most important active constituents of thyme are phenolic acids (caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, rosmarinic acid 0.15–1.35%), triterpenes (oleanolic acid, ursolic acid), tannins, and flavonoids.”Ekstrakt z tymianku oraz tymol są składnikami licznych tabletek do ssania, kropli, syropów wykrztuśnych i przeciwkaszlowych. Najbardziej istotnymi składnikami czynnymi tymianku obok olejku eterycznego są kwasy fenolowe (kwas kawowy, chlorogenowy, kwas rozmarynowy 0,15-1,35%), triterpeny (kwas oleanolowy, ursolowy), garbniki i flawonoidy.

Medicines containing thyme herb alone may cause stomach problems and are not suitable for people allergic to thyme or plants from the same family.

„Medicines containing thyme herb must not be used by patients who are allergic to thyme herb or to other plants in the Lamiaceae (Labiatae) family. Stomach problems may occur. More information about the risks associated with these medicines containing thyme herb, including precautions for their safe use, can be found in the monograph under “All documents” on the Agency’s website: ema.europa.eu/Find medicine/Herbal medicines for human use.”Leków zawierających ziele tymianku nie można stosować u pacjentów uczulonych na ziele tymianku lub na inne rośliny z rodziny Lamiaceae (Labiatae). Mogą wystąpić zaburzenia żołądkowe. Some combinations of thyme and primrose root are used for chesty coughs, while others are used for coughs associated with a cold.

„The HMPC concluded that some preparations of thyme and primrose root can be used as an expectorant (a medicine that helps bring up phlegm) for productive cough (with mucus) in adults. The HMPC also concluded that, based on long-standing use, other preparations of thyme and primrose root can be used for coughs associated with a cold.”HMPC ustalił, że niektóre przetwory z tymianku i korzenia pierwiosnka mogą być stosowane jako środek wykrztuśny (lek pomagający odkrztusić flegmę) w produktywnym kaszlu (z odkrztuszaniem) u dorosłych. HMPC ustalił, że z uwagi na wieloletnie zastosowanie inne przetwory z tymianku i korzenia pierwiosnka mogą być stosowane w kaszlu związanym z przeziębieniem.

For some combinations of thyme and primrose root, scientific evidence supports their effectiveness and safety for productive cough, while their use for coughs associated with a cold is based on tradition.

„The HMPC’s conclusions on using some preparations of thyme and primrose root for productive cough are based on their “well-established medicinal use”. This means that published data provide scientific evidence of their effectiveness and safety when used in this way, covering a period of at least 10 years in the EU.”Ustalenia HMPC dotyczące stosowania niektórych przetworów z tymianku i korzenia pierwiosnka w produktywnym kaszlu oparte są na ich „ugruntowanym zastosowaniu medycznym”. Oznacza to, że istnieją dane z piśmiennictwa zawierające dowody naukowe ich skuteczności i bezpieczeństwa stosowania w przypadku stosowania ich w ten sposób, obejmujące okres co najmniej 10 lat w UE.
