Does a fruit-and-vegetable fast destroy or strengthen muscles if you exercise?

Sources: 9 · Article: 13 991 characters

A fruit-and-vegetable fast does not have to destroy muscle; exercise is needed to support muscle recovery and strengthening.

  • Lean mass may decrease slightly during a fast, and muscle fibers may become smaller; however, they are expected to return to their previous state during the rebuilding period.
  • Ewa Dąbrowska emphasizes that inactivity contributes to muscle wasting, while movement during a fast may stimulate muscle growth.
  • Ewa Dąbrowska distinguishes fasting from starvation and stresses that physical activity is essential.

Ewa Dąbrowska

Fasting is meant to regenerate and strengthen muscles, but exercise is needed for their recovery.

„Experience has shown that fasting does not destroy muscles but regenerates and strengthens them. However, be aware that you need to exercise if you want your muscles to recover while fasting.”praktyka wykazała, że post nie niszczy mięśni, lecz je regeneruje i wzmacnia, ale uwaga: chcąc uzyskać regenerację mięśni na poście trzeba ćwiczyć.
Ewa Dąbrowska

In the cases studied, patients mainly lost fat, while their lean mass decreased slightly.

„The results were always similar: patients mainly lost fat, and their lean mass decreased slightly. Even so, they always gained energy—more than they had before the diet. Muscle-mass loss during fasting is linked to the fact that some amino acids that make up muscle, called glucoplastic amino acids, can be converted into glucose during ketosis.”Wyniki zawsze były podobne: pacjenci tracili głównie tłuszcz, a masa beztłuszczowa nieco się zmniejszała, a mimo to zawsze przybywało im energii, której tyle nie mieli przed dietą.

During a prolonged fast, the number of muscle fibers remains the same, although they may become smaller; they are expected to return to their previous state during the rebuilding period.

„But even during prolonged fasts, the number of muscle fibers remains the same, although they may become smaller; during the rebuilding period, they return to their original state. Fasting causes a sharp increase in growth hormone, which stimulates muscle growth, improves bone quality, and promotes fat burning, so muscles cannot waste away during a fast.”Ale nawet w czasie długich postów ilość włókien mięśniowych pozostaje taka sama, choć może być zmniejszona pod względem wielkości, a w okresie odbudowy zostanie przywrócona do pierwotnej postaci. Post powoduje gwałtowne podwyższenie hormonu wzrostu, który stymuluje wzrost mięśni, poprawia jakość kości i spalanie tłuszczu, zatem mięśnie nie mogą zanikać w czasie postu.
Ewa Dąbrowska

Fasting is said to increase the number and activity of cells involved in repairing damaged muscles.

„When muscles are damaged, muscle stem cells (satellite cells), located next to muscle fibers, are activated and trigger the repair of damaged tissue. Studies have shown that fasting, even for short periods, also has a beneficial effect on these muscle stem cells, increasing their number and activity, which promotes greater muscle repair1.”W przypadku uszkodzenia mięśni następuje aktywacja komórek macierzystych mięśni (komórki satelitarne), znajdujących się w sąsiedztwie włókien mięśniowych, które wywołują regenerację uszkodzonej tkanki.

Ewa Dąbrowska attributes increases in muscle mass to short bouts of exercise, which activate genes that start muscle protein synthesis.

„It is important to know that even a few minutes of exercise can activate genes that start muscle protein synthesis, and this is how muscle mass begins to develop. We noticed that an older woman who was on the diet but moved very little had sagging arm muscles after one week of treatment.”Trzeba wiedzieć, że nawet pod wpływem kilkuminutowych ćwiczeń następuje aktywacja genów, które uruchamiają syntezę białka mięśni, i w ten sposób zaczyna rozwijać się masa mięśniowa.

Inactivity can lead to muscle wasting, while movement and fasting are said to increase the mass and number of mitochondria in muscles.

„It is not fasting but inactivity that leads to muscle wasting, even with a normal diet, as shown by muscle wasting in limbs immobilized after a fracture.

Fasting is said to cause the loss of mainly fat tissue, not muscle.

„Weight loss is mainly due to the burning of fat tissue, not muscle, because fasting has this effect: it activates the same processes as a ketogenic diet (reduced carbohydrate intake). To maintain the benefits, it is worth making a healthy lifestyle change permanent.”Utrata wagi wiąże się ze spalaniem w głównej mierze tkanki tłuszczowej, a nie mięśni, gdyż taką właściwość ma post – aktywując te same procesy, co dieta ketogeniczna (redukcja węglowodanów). By utrwalić korzystne wyniki warto wprowadzić prozdrowotną zmianę stylu życia już na stałe.
Ewa Dąbrowska

Ewa Dąbrowska distinguishes fasting from starvation and stresses that physical activity is needed during a fast.

„More information about the fruit-and-vegetable fast is available at www.ewadabrowska.pl. It is important to know that muscle and body breakdown can occur only in cases of starvation. In such situations, people feel intense hunger. But during a fast, when the body has switched off the hunger center, the body heals itself, and there is no need to worry, because every cell has a genetic ability to heal itself, not destroy itself.”Więcej informacji o poście warzywno-owocowym znajduje się na stronie www.ewadabrowska.pl Trzeba wiedzieć, że destrukcja mięśni i ciała może nastąpić jedynie w przypadku zagłodzenia.

Physical activity is recommended during the proper fast, which consists of low-starch vegetables and low-sugar fruits.

„The next phase is the proper fast, based on low-starch vegetables and low-sugar fruits, combined with physical activity and quiet reflection to achieve physical, mental, and spiritual harmony. The final stage is the transition from fasting to a wholesome diet, followed by a phase of wholesome eating, physical activity, and making periodic fasting a lasting habit.”Następną fazą jest post właściwy na warzywach niskoskrobiowych i owocach niskocukrowych połączony z aktywnością ruchową, wyciszeniem w celu uzyskania harmonii fizyczno-psychiczno-duchowej.

A meta-analysis found that foods rich in anthocyanins, which are found in fruits, among other things, were associated with better recovery and strength after exercise.

Aim of the study: Anthocyanins (ACN), the sub-class of (poly)phenols responsible for the red-blue-purple pigmentation of fruit and vegetables, have gained considerable interest in sport and exercise research due to their potential to facilitate exercise recovery. A systematic literature search was performed using PubMed, The Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, SPORTDiscus and CINAHL.

Results: Strength was improved with ACN at all time points (g: 0.45-0.67). DOMS (g: -0.23) was lower 24 hours post-exercise and power was improved 24 hours (g: 0.62) and 48 hours (g: 0.57) post exercise. The CK was lower 48 hours post-exercise (g: -0.31) and there was a trend for a positive association with ACN dose (p = 0.057). This systematic review provides new data showing ACN-rich foods promote functional and subjective recovery likely due to the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of ACN.

The review suggests that higher fruit and vegetable intake is associated with better physical performance, although it does not prove that this diet strengthens muscles during exercise.

Aim of the study: Loss of skeletal muscle strength and mass (sarcopenia) is common in older adults and associated with an increased risk of disability, frailty and premature death. Finding cost-effective prevention and treatment strategies for sarcopenia for the growing ageing population is therefore of great public health interest.

Results: There is reasonably consistent epidemiological evidence suggesting benefits of higher fruits and vegetables consumption for better physical performance. Similarly, higher adherence to the Mediterranean diet is associated with beneficial effects on muscle function in observational studies. However, intervention studies are lacking. This review discusses how current evidence may inform the development of preventive and intervention strategies for optimal muscle ageing and nutritional public policy aimed at combatting sarcopenia.

The review reports that higher fruit and vegetable intake has been linked to better physical performance and protection against muscle loss in older adults.

Aim of the study: Muscle health is important for the functionality and independence of older adults, and certain nutrients as well as dietary patterns have been shown to offer protective effects against declines in strength and function associated with aging.

Results: Randomized controlled trials appear to suggest a critical role for dietary intake of protein in preventing sarcopenia and muscle loss, although the optimal dose and type of protein is unknown. There are some promising data regarding the role of vitamin D and sarcopenia, but it is unclear whether the dose, frequency of dose, or length of treatment impacts the efficacy of vitamin D on improving muscle mass or function. Selenium, magnesium, and omega 3 fatty acids have been studied as supplements in clinical trials and in the diet, and they appear to demonstrate a potential association with physical activity and muscle performance in older individuals. Following the Mediterranean diet and higher consumption of fruits and vegetables have been associated with improved physical performance and protection against muscle wasting, sarcopenia, and frailty.

In a small study of people with prediabetes, red berry juice consumed during training helped maintain relative muscle mass.

Aim of the study: The combination of the consumption of so-called superfoods and regular exercise is a promising approach for the prevention of chronic diseases.

Results: Ten subjects participated in two crossover trials, each for 2 × 14 days: A): juice versus placebo, both without exercise, and B) juice versus placebo, both with concurrent strength and endurance training. Daily consumption of red berry fruit juice led to improvements in peripheral resistance, while no significant changes were observed in the placebo group (ANOVA: time x group, p ≤ 0.05). Participants in the juice + training group maintained their relative muscle mass, while those in the placebo + training group experienced a slight decline in their relative muscle mass (ANOVA: time x group, p ≤ 0.05). Short-term repeated consumption of a (poly)phenol-rich red berry fruit juice (in combination with physical training) presents an easy-to-apply strategy to improve health outcomes and may particularly be beneficial for vascular health and muscle mass in individuals with pre-diabetes.

In a small study, a diet rich in nitrates from fruit and vegetables improved several measures of exercise capacity, including muscle work.

Aim of the study: It has been reported that nitrate supplementation can improve exercise performance. Most of the studies have used either beetroot juice or sodium nitrate as a supplement; there is lack of data on the potential ergogenic benefits of an increased dietary nitrate intake from a diet based on fruits and vegetables.

Results: CD) were observed: (a) a significant reduction of oxygen consumption during moderate-intensity constant work-rate cycling exercise (1.178 ± 0.141 vs. 1.269 ± 0.136 L·min(-1)); (b) a significantly higher total muscle work during fatiguing, intermittent sub-maximal isometric knee extension (357.3 ± 176.1 vs. 253.6 ± 149.0 Nm·s·kg(-1)); (c) an improved performance in Repeated Sprint Ability test. These findings suggest that a high-nitrate diet could be a feasible and effective strategy to improve exercise performance.

Among kidney transplant recipients, higher fruit intake, but not vegetable intake, was associated with greater lean mass, handgrip strength, and walking speed.

Aim of the study: To investigate the association between fruit and vegetable intake and lean mass, muscle strength, and functional capacity in kidney transplant patients (KTPs).

Results: Fruit intake (servings) was positively associated with lean mass (kg) (β = 0.522; P = .024), handgrip strength (kg) (β = 0.874; P = .012), and walking speed (m/s) (β = 0.021; P = .014). However, no significant association was observed between fruit intake and performance on the five times sit-to-stand test. Vegetable intake was not significantly associated with any of the muscle-related parameters evaluated. Fruit, but not vegetable, intake was positively associated with lean mass, handgrip strength, and 4-m walking speed in KTPs.
