Immunity — can a vegetable fast strengthen the body better than supplements?

Sources: 10 · Article: 12 012 characters

Ewa Dąbrowska claims that regular fruit-and-vegetable fasts strengthen immunity and may reduce infections.

  • The fast is also said to reduce inflammation, improve gut-barrier integrity, and help restore immune balance.
  • Ewa Dąbrowska attributes an important role in restoring immunity to vitamins D3 and K2.
  • An account of a 71-year-old woman says that she stopped getting colds after fasting.

Fasting improves gut-barrier integrity, reduces inflammation, and helps restore immune balance.

„Fasting improves gut-barrier integrity, reduces inflammation, and helps restore immune balance. When immunosuppressive drugs (e.g. steroids) are used, fasting may be less effective, and intolerance test results may be unreliable.”Post poprawia szczelność jelit, zmniejsza stan zapalny i pomaga przywrócić równowagę immunologiczną. W przypadku stosowania leków immunosupresyjnych (np. sterydów) skuteczność postu może być osłabiona, a wyniki testów na nietolerancje – niemiarodajne.

Strengthening the immune system is presented as one of the key effects of fasting, accompanied by infections disappearing.

„One of the key effects of fasting is a stronger immune system; infections, colds, and tonsillitis then disappear, while sleep quality, concentration, and memory improve. Sometimes so-called mental clarity appears, supporting personal development. People regain their passion, take on new challenges, start businesses, or return to work or study.”Jednym z kluczowych efektów postu jest wzmocnienie układu odpornościowego, wtedy znikają infekcje, przeziębienia, anginy, poprawia się jakość snu, koncentracja, pamięć. Czasem pojawia się tzw. jasność umysłu, sprzyjająca rozwojowi osobistemu. Osoby odzyskują pasję, podejmują nowe wyzwania, zakładają firmy, wracają do pracy lub studiów.

Vitamin D3 with K2 is said to play an important role in restoring immunity.

„Vitamin D3 with K2 plays an important role in restoring the body's immunity. Autoimmune diseases are inflammatory conditions in which the immune system attacks the body's own tissues. Key factors in their development include: Leaky gut — the passage of undigested proteins into the bloodstream.”Ważną rolę w przywróceniu odporności organizmu odgrywa witamina D3 z K2. Choroby autoimmunologiczne to stany zapalne, w których układ odpornościowy atakuje własne tkanki. Kluczowe czynniki ich rozwoju to: Nieszczelność jelit – przepuszczanie niestrawionych białek do krwiobiegu.

„She stopped getting colds, and her heart pain also went away; she no longer gets tired, even when walking uphill. Three years have now passed since the observation began. Eating after the fast is intended to support immunity and the body's recovery.

A review found that eating more fruits and vegetables may lower some inflammation markers and increase the proportion of γδ-T cells.

Aim of the study: Inflammation is associated with an increased risk of a range of chronic diseases. A diet high in fruit and vegetables may help to reduce inflammation, as fruit and vegetables are rich sources of antioxidants and other biologically active substances, which may improve immune function.

Results: Eighty-three studies were included. Of these, 71 (86%) were clinical trials, and 12 were observational studies (n = 10 cross-sectional and n = 2 cohort). Amongst the observational research, n = 10 studies found an inverse association between intakes of fruit or vegetables and inflammatory biomarkers. Similarly, the majority of the intervention studies (68%, n = 48) reported beneficial effects of fruit or vegetable intake on ≥1 biomarker of systemic or airway inflammation. A meta-analysis of included studies showed that fruit or vegetable intake decreased circulating levels of C-reactive protein and tumor necrosis factor-α (P < 0.05) and increased the γδ-T cell population (P < 0.05). In conclusion, this review suggests that higher intakes of fruit and vegetables lead to both a reduction in proinflammatory mediators and an enhanced immune cell profile.

A review found that fruit and vegetables may be beneficially associated with asthma and some inflammatory responses, but study results were mixed.

Aim of the study: Abstract: Evidence suggests that reduced intake of fruit and vegetables may play a critical role in the development of asthma and allergies. The present review aimed to summarize the evidence for the association between fruit and vegetable intake, risk of asthma/wheeze and immune responses.

Results: In addition, the meta-analyses in both adults and children showed inverse associations between fruit intake and risk of prevalent wheeze and asthma severity (p < 0.05). Likewise, vegetable intake was negatively associated with risk of prevalent asthma (p < 0.05). Seven studies examined immune responses in relation to fruit and vegetable intake in asthma, with n = 6 showing a protective effect against either systemic or airway inflammation. Fruit and vegetable consumption appears to be protective against asthma.

In pigs, a diet supplemented with fruit and vegetables for two weeks changed markers related to immune function and the gut microbiome.

Aim of the study: A study was conducted to determine the effects of a diet supplemented with fruits and vegetables (FV) on the host whole blood cell (WBC) transcriptome and the composition and function of the intestinal microbiome. Nine six-week-old pigs were fed a pig grower diet alone or supplemented with lyophilized FV equivalent to half the daily recommended amount prescribed for humans by the Dietary Guideline for Americans (DGA) for two weeks.

Results: Isolated DNA from the fecal microbiome was used for 16S rDNA taxonomic analysis and prediction of metabolomic function. Feeding an FV-supplemented diet to pigs induced differential expression of several genes associated with an increase in B-cell development and differentiation and the regulation of cellular movement, inflammatory response, and cell-to-cell signaling. Linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe) in fecal microbiome samples showed differential increases in genera from Lachnospiraceae and Ruminococcaceae families within the order Clostridiales and Erysipelotrichaceae family with a predicted reduction in rgpE-glucosyltransferase protein associated with lipopolysaccharide biosynthesis in pigs fed the FV-supplemented diet.

In mice, fruit and vegetables in the diet reduced immune disturbances associated with obesity and a high-fat diet.

Aim of the study: Obesity is often associated with impaired immune responses, including enlarged spleen, increased inflammation, and impaired T-cell-mediated function, which may lead to increased susceptibility to infections. Bioactive compounds found in various fruits and vegetables (F&V) have been shown to have strong anti-inflammatory effects.

Results: Mice fed the HFD exhibited significantly higher spleen weight, decreased splenic CD8+ lymphocytes, suppressed T lymphocyte proliferation, and reduced serum IL-1ß and IFN-γ concentrations compared with those fed the LF diet. Feeding mice with the HFD supplemented with 10% or 15% F&V restored HFD-associated changes of these affected biomarkers compared with those fed HFD only. Furthermore, a significant correlation was found between immunologic markers and F&V level. These results suggest that increased consumption of F&V has beneficial effects in preventing HFD-associated dysregulation of immune function.

„One of the best ways to get vitamins into kids is to juice and serve fresh, raw vegetables and fruit, preferably organic. Our kids love homemade vegetable juice. They chug it. I'm not kidding. We make sure they will by blending in sweeter fruits and veggies with the ones that are less so. For example, a family favorite starts with a carrot base, 8 or so, an apple or two, a handful of cabbage, a few handfuls of spinach, and several stalks of celery and a beet, leaves included. My kids are getting far more vegetables (and therefore nutrients) in their diet than most. Sure, we get them to eat vegetables and fruit, too.”One of the best ways to get vitamins into kids is to juice and serve fresh, raw vegetables and fruit, preferably organic.
