What exactly is the fruit-and-vegetable diet, and why does fasting restore health?

Sources: 17 · Article: 19 817 characters

Ewa Dąbrowska describes the fruit-and-vegetable diet as a fast and a spiritual sacrifice, not just a way to lose weight.

  • She explains that fasting is meant to cleanse the body of toxins and restore balance to the body and spirit.
  • She also points to better gut function, a stronger immune system, and the activation of the body’s natural mechanisms as possible ways to improve health.
  • In the study described, the diet consisted entirely of natural fruit and vegetable products and provided about 500 kcal per day.

The fruit-and-vegetable diet is presented as a fast with spiritual significance, not just a weight-loss method.

„Anna Zalech interviews Ewa Dąbrowska, the creator of the fruit-and-vegetable diet and a long-time employee of the Medical Academy in Gdańsk. 78 First of all, I wanted to remind people that the fruit-and-vegetable diet, which I developed many years ago, is in fact a fast and has spiritual value.”Ewą Dąbrowską, autorką diety warzywno-owocowej, wieloletnim pracownikiem Akademii Medycznej w Gdańsku, rozmawia Anna Zalech 78 Przede wszystkim chciałam przypomnieć, że dieta warzywno-owocowa, którą wiele lat temu opracowałam, tak naprawdę jest postem i ma wartość duchową.

Fasting is intended to restore harmony between body and spirit and to bring healing to both.

„Taking a holistic view of the human being, fasting restores harmony at every possible level—from the spirit, through molecules, genes, and cells—and in this way brings complete healing to the body and spirit. Even animals fast when they are ill. We all have health encoded in our genes, and the fact that we lose it is a result of an unhealthy lifestyle.”Patrząc holistycznie na człowieka, post przywraca harmonię na wszystkich możliwych poziomach – począwszy od ducha, poprzez molekuły, geny, komórki – i w ten sposób daje nam zupełne uzdrowienie ciała i ducha. Nawet zwierzęta głodują, gdy są chore. Mamy wszyscy zapisane w genach zdrowie, a to, że je tracimy, jest wyrazem złego stylu życia.

Fasting is intended to activate the body’s potential through detoxification, while Ewa Dąbrowska links illness to an unhealthy lifestyle and toxins.

„Through the detoxification that fasting provides, we activate the body’s incredible potential. It is especially important nowadays because many people are ill. I encourage you to visit my website, www.ewadabrowska.pl. Along with various information about the fruit-and-vegetable diet, we have also posted my book “Saving Body and Spirit Through Nutrition” in an electronic version.”Poprzez detoksykację, którą daje nam post, uruchamiamy niewyobrażalne możliwości organizmu. W dzisiejszych czasach jest on szczególnie ważny, bo wiele osób choruje. Zachęcam do zajrzenia na moją stronę internetową www.ewadabrowska.pl. Regular fasts are intended to cleanse the body, provide plant compounds and micronutrients, and restore its balance.

„Even short, periodic fasts help cleanse the body of toxins, provide bioactive plant compounds and micronutrients, and restore the body’s physiological balance. Practised regularly, fasting may prevent many chronic diseases.”Nawet krótkie, okresowe posty pomagają oczyszczać organizm z toksyn, dostarczać bioaktywnych związków roślinnych i mikroelementów, a także przywracać fizjologiczną równowagę organizmu. Regularnie praktykowany post może zapobiegać wielu chorobom przewlekłym.

Fasting is intended to strengthen the immune system. Ewa Dąbrowska links this to the disappearance of infections and improvements in sleep, concentration, and memory.

„One of the key effects of fasting is a stronger immune system. Infections, colds, and tonsillitis then disappear, and sleep quality, concentration, and memory improve. Sometimes a so-called clarity of mind appears, supporting personal development. People regain their passion, take on new challenges, start businesses, and return to work or studies.”Jednym z kluczowych efektów postu jest wzmocnienie układu odpornościowego, wtedy znikają infekcje, przeziębienia, anginy, poprawia się jakość snu, koncentracja, pamięć. Czasem pojawia się tzw. jasność umysłu, sprzyjająca rozwojowi osobistemu. Osoby odzyskują pasję, podejmują nowe wyzwania, zakładają firmy, wracają do pracy lub studiów.

After the body is cleansed of toxins, self-healing mechanisms are supposed to become active.

„Seeing the surprising results this method produced, she understood what an extraordinary phenomenon the human body is: once cleansed of toxins, it activates self-healing mechanisms. She devoted the following years of her professional work to this subject, culminating in the development of the Dr. Ewa Dąbrowska® diet and the establishment in 2018 of”Widząc zaskakujące efekty, jakie przynosiła ta metoda, zrozumiała, jak wielkim fenomenem jest ludzki organizm, który po oczyszczeniu z toksyn uruchamia samoleczące mechanizmy. The diet is intended primarily to improve gut function, which Ewa Dąbrowska links to detoxification and skin health.

„The fruit-and-vegetable diet can improve the condition of our skin, but in fact it primarily improves the functioning of our gut. Sometimes we may think we have a skin disease, when paradoxically we have a bowel disease. Consider that human skin, covering an area of 1.5 square metres, is an important organ for detoxification. In the study described, the diet consisted entirely of natural fruit and vegetable products and provided about 500 kcal per day.

„The diet consisted entirely of natural fruit and vegetable products and provided about 500 kcal per day. Results: Mean BMI before and after the diet was 26.8±4.7 vs. 25.8±4.3, respectively (p = 0.001); ALT activity was 122.0±60.7 U/l vs. 75.6±31.8 U/l, and AST was 91.8±56.0 U/l vs.”Dieta składała się wyłącznie z naturalnych produktów warzywno-owocowych i dostarczała ok. 500 kcal dziennie. Observations concerning Hashimoto’s disease described improvements in well-being and thyroid test results after the diet.

„Hundreds of people from across the country and abroad who have Hashimoto’s disease come to us for the fruit-and-vegetable diet, which is a type of fast. They really do return satisfied because there is an improvement not only in how they feel, but also in a reduction in thyroid antibodies and a normalization of thyroid hormones.”Przyjeżdżają do nas na dietę warzywno-owocową, która jest odmianą postu, setki osób z różnych stron kraju i z zagranicy cierpiących na Hashimoto i rzeczywiście wracają zadowoleni, gdyż następuje poprawa i to nie tylko samopoczucia, ale również obniżają się przeciwciała przeciwtarczycowe i normalizują hormony tarczycy.

In cases of blocked fallopian tubes, fasting is said to activate phagocytosis and autophagy, described as mechanisms for removing adhesions and damaged cell structures.

„The fruit-and-vegetable fast activates the body’s natural regenerative mechanisms, such as phagocytosis (the removal of adhesions by phagocytic cells) and autophagy (the elimination of damaged cell structures), restoring the patency of the fallopian tubes and fertility. This fast may also help fight infections, which often accompany blocked tubes, increasing the chance of restoring fertility.”Post warzywno-owocowy aktywuje naturalne mechanizmy regeneracyjne organizmu, takie jak fagocytoza (usuwanie zrostów przez komórki żerne) oraz autofagia (eliminacja uszkodzonych struktur komórkowych), co przywraca drożność jajowodów i płodność. Taki post może również wspomagać zwalczanie infekcji, które często towarzyszą niedrożności, zwiększając szansę na przywrócenie płodności.

The review indicates that plant-based diets built around minimally processed foods, vegetables, and fruits, as well as fasting, may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Aim of the study: What we eat is a cornerstone of cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention, but health professionals may not have a clear understanding of the current evidence-based research to underpin eating habits and recommendations.

Results: Consuming one unit of alcohol per day may contribute to a reduced cardiovascular risk without presenting an unfavourable risk profile. In general, there is no evidence that vitamin and mineral supplements reduce CVD risk. High potassium intake is beneficial in healthy individuals, calcium or selenium supplements offer no added benefit, and high sodium intake is harmful. Diet is a major component of CVD prevention, and health professionals should include dietary assessment and evidence-based recommendations in their clinical practice.

A meta-analysis found that plant-based diets and higher fruit and vegetable intake are associated with a lower risk of erectile dysfunction.

Aim of the study: Erectile dysfunction (ED) is prevalent among men, but its relationship with dietary habits is uncertain. The aim of our study was to assess whether dietary patterns enhance erectile function by reviewing the literature published before August 1, 2022, via PubMed, Web of Science, and EMBASE databases.

Results: High-protein, low-fat diets (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.38, 95% CI: 1.12-1.64; P < 0.00001) and high-carbohydrate, low-fat diets (HR = 0.79, 95% CI: 0.55-1.04; P < 0.00001) improved IIEF-5 scores. Combined diet and exercise interventions decreased the likelihood of ED (OR = 0.49, 95% CI: 0.28-0.85; P = 0.01) and increased the IIEF-5 score (OR = 3.40, 95% CI: 1.69-5.11; P < 0.0001). Diets abundant in fruits and vegetables (OR = 0.97, 95% CI: 0.96-0.98; P < 0.00001) and nuts (OR = 0.54, 95% CI: 0.37-0.80; P = 0.002) were also correlated with lower ED risk. Our meta-analysis underscores a strong dietary-ED association, suggesting that low-fat/Mediterranean diets rich in produce and nuts could benefit ED management.

The review suggests that avoiding excessive calorie restriction and eating vegetables and fruits may prevent episodes of jaundice in Gilbert syndrome.

Aim of the study: Gilbert syndrome is the most common hyperbilirubinemia, associated with a mutation in the UGT1A1 bilirubin gene, which produces an enzyme that conjugates bilirubin with glucuronic acid. Episodes of jaundice occurring in GS negatively affect patients' quality of life.

Results: As a result, 19 studies met the inclusion criteria. The research mainly focused on the impact of caloric restriction, consumption of various diet variants, and vegetables and fruits on hyperbilirubinemia and metabolic health. A nutritional intervention consisting of not applying excessive calorie restrictions and consuming fats and biologically active compounds in vegetables and fruits (Cruciferae, Apiaceous, Rutaceae) may prevent the occurrence of jaundice episodes. It is justified to conduct further research on detecting such compounds in food, which, by influencing the expression of the UGT liver enzyme gene, could contribute to regulating bilirubin concentration in the blood of people with GS.

The review describes how calorie restriction and fasting activate cellular defence mechanisms, while plant compounds may activate similar processes.

Aim of the study: Caloric restriction, intermittent fasting, and exercise activate defensive cellular responses such as autophagy, DNA repair, and the induction of antioxidant enzymes. These processes improve health and longevity by protecting cells and organs against damage, mutations, and reactive oxygen species.

Results: Consuming a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, and mushrooms can also improve health and longevity. Phytochemicals such as alkaloids, polyphenols, and terpenoids found in plants and fungi activate the same cellular processes as caloric restriction, fasting, and exercise. Many of the beneficial effects of fruits and vegetables may thus be due to activation of stress resistance pathways by phytochemicals. A better understanding of the mechanisms of action of phytochemicals may provide important insights to delay aging and prevent chronic diseases.

In the study, higher fruit and vegetable intake was associated with a lower likelihood of prediabetes.

Aim of the study: Few studies have evaluated the association of fruit and vegetable (FV) intake and pre-diabetes. However, these studies are very limited and incomplete. Therefore, the aim of our study was to compare FV consumption and their subgroups between pre-diabetic and control subjects.

Results: After adjustment for confounding variables, participants in the lower quartiles of FV and total fruit intake were more likely to experience pre-diabetes compared with those in the higher quartiles (p trend < 0.007). In addition, cruciferous vegetables, other vegetables, and berries were inversely associated with pre-diabetes (p < 0.05), although a distinct dose-response relationship was not found. Unexpectedly, higher intake of dark yellow vegetables was significantly associated with a higher chance of pre-diabetes (p trend = 0.006). Other vegetable and fruit subgroups did not show any significant relationship with this disorder. Our findings suggest that higher intake of total FV and total fruits might be associated with lower odds ratio of pre-diabetes.

In women with PCOS, the DASH diet lowered insulin levels, insulin resistance, and CRP, and reduced waist and hip circumference.

„Adherence to the DASH eating pattern, compared to the control diet, resulted in a significant reduction of serum insulin levels (-1.88 vs. 2.89 μIU/ml, p=0.03), HOMA-IR score (-0.45 vs. 0.80; p=0.01), and serum hs-CRP levels (-763.29 vs. 665.95 ng/ml, p=0.009).”-Adherence to the DASH eating pattern, compared to the -control diet, resulted in a significant reduction of serum insulin levels (-1.88 vs. 2.89 μIU/ml, p=0.03), HOMA-IR score (-0.45 vs. 0.80; p=0.01), and serum hs-CRP levels (-763.29 vs. 665.95 ng/ml, p=0.009).

In a short study, eating oranges daily was associated with a lower prevalence of fatty liver.

Aim of the study: Background: Consumption of flavonoid-rich orange juice has been shown to reduce adiposity and liver steatosis in murine models of diet-induced obesity. However, little is known about the effects of whole orange intake, independent of body weight changes, on liver function and steatosis in individuals with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD).

Results: Dietary analysis revealed no change in caloric intake, but vitamins C, A, thiamine, and riboflavin increased in the orange group. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that phytochemical-rich foods, especially whole fruits like oranges, may enhance liver function as an adjunct treatment for MASLD. The notable reduction in liver steatosis prevalence occurred independently of body weight changes. Further studies are needed to investigate the long-term effects of orange supplementation on steatosis and fibrosis progression and to identify the specific bioactive compounds and mechanisms involved.

The review indicates that higher intake of whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and nuts is associated with a lower risk of death from any cause.

Aim of the study: Genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors primarily determine the lifespan of humans. From these, nutrition is a key component affecting our health, and several studies particularly in model organisms and rodents have shown that nutrition has also the potential to increase lifespan.

Results: The main conclusions of this review are that caloric restriction without malnutrition, methionine restriction, lower protein intake or supplementation of spermidine are major life-extending factors, in model organisms or rodents. In humans, certain healthy foods are associated with longer telomere length, and reductions in protein intake with lower IGF-1 levels, respectively, both relations being associated with longer lifespan. Furthermore, a high intake of whole grains, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and also coffee is associated with a reduced risk for all-cause mortality whereas a high intake of (red) meat and especially processed meat is positively related to all-cause mortality. In addition, the Mediterranean and also high-quality diets are associated with reduced all-cause mortality risk.

A meta-analysis found that higher fruit and vegetable intake was associated with a lower risk of prediabetes, although no such association was found in cohort studies.

Aim of the study: Background/Objectives: Previous studies have reported inconsistent findings regarding the association between fruit and vegetable consumption and prediabetes. Therefore, we aimed to investigate this association using a meta-analysis, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines.

Results: Subgroup analysis by study design showed a significant association in cross-sectional studies (OR, 0.81; 95% CI, 0.70-0.94; I2 = 91.6%; n = 16), whereas cohort studies showed no significant association (OR, 0.97; 95% CI, 0.92-1.02; I2 = 15.1%; n = 3). Subgroup analyses by sex indicated a significant inverse association among male participants (OR, 0.77; 95% CI, 0.61-0.97; I2 = 63.3%; n = 4), but not among female participants (OR, 0.97; 95% CI, 0.69-1.37; I2 = 82.1%; n = 3). Conclusions: Overall, this meta-analysis indicates that greater fruit and vegetable consumption is associated with a reduced risk of prediabetes. However, additional prospective cohort studies are required to clarify potential confounding factors and confirm this association.
