Henryk Różański

Comfrey root was used, among other things, for fractures, including those with swelling or soft tissue damage.

„Comfrey root was used primarily to treat respiratory catarrh, wounds that were difficult to heal, open fractures and fractures with soft tissue damage, and fractures with swelling. 100 or 200 years ago, and even earlier, a decoction of comfrey root (boiled for a few minutes) was given to promote sweating, protect mucous membranes, coat the digestive tract, soothe irritation of the stomach and intestines, and treat inflammation of the digestive tract and respiratory tract.”Korzeń żywokostu miał przede wszystkim zastosowanie w leczeniu nieżytu układu oddechowego, trudno gojących się ran, w leczeniu złamań otwartych i z uszkodzeniem tkanki miękkiej, złamań z obrzękami. 100, 200 lat temu i jeszcze dawniej odwar z korzenia żywokostu (gotować kilka minut) podawano jako środek pędzący poty, osłaniający błony śluzowe, powlekający przewód pokarmowy, łagodzący podrażnienia żołądka i jelit, przy stanach zapalnych przewodu pokarmowego i dróg oddechowych.
Europejska Agencja Leków (EMA)

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids from comfrey root can have toxic effects on the liver when taken by mouth.

„Comfrey root contains substances known as pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which have a toxic effect on the liver if taken by mouth. Short-term use of comfrey root on the skin should not pose a significant risk. The pyrrolizidine alkaloid content must be specified for every medicine containing comfrey root, and patients should not be exposed to a dose exceeding 0.35 micrograms of pyrrolizidine alkaloids per day.”Korzeń żywokostu zawiera substancje znane jako alkaloidy pirolizydynowe, które wykazują toksyczny wpływ na wątrobę w przypadku przyjmowania doustnego.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) recognizes the use of root preparations on the skin to relieve the symptoms of minor sprains and bruises.

„The HMPC concluded that, because of its established use, medicines containing comfrey root may be used to relieve symptoms associated with minor sprains and bruises. These medicines should be used only by adults and for no longer than 10 days.”HMPC stwierdził, że z uwagi na ugruntowane stosowanie leki zawierające korzeń żywokostu mogą być stosowane w łagodzeniu objawów towarzyszących drobnym zwichnięciom i stłuczeniom. Leki te powinny być stosowane wyłącznie u osób dorosłych i nie dłużej niż 10 dni.
Europejska Agencja Leków (EMA)

Such preparations should be used only by adults and for no longer than 10 days.

„These medicines should be used only by adults and for no longer than 10 days. Detailed information about taking medicines containing comfrey root and who may use them can be found in the patient leaflet supplied with the medicine.”Leki te powinny być stosowane wyłącznie u osób dorosłych i nie dłużej niż 10 dni.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) notes that this recognized use is based mainly on long-standing traditional use, rather than sufficient evidence from clinical studies.

„This means that, despite the lack of sufficient evidence from clinical studies, the effectiveness of these herbal medicines is plausible, and there is evidence that they have been used safely in this way for at least 30 years (including at least 15 years in the EU).”Oznacza to, że pomimo braku wystarczających dowodów z badań klinicznych, skuteczność tych leków roślinnych jest prawdopodobna i istnieją dowody na to, że są one bezpiecznie stosowane w ten sposób od co najmniej 30 lat (w tym od co najmniej 15 lat w UE).
Henryk Różański

Henryk Różański believes that drying, grinding, and boiling reduce the amount of alkaloids to a level that does not pose a health risk.

„Comfrey loses most of its alkaloids when dried. Grinding and boiling break down additional alkaloids. In practice, the alkaloid level is therefore low enough not to pose a health risk. I personally use comfrey and value it highly. It has been used in medicine for many years, and I trust remedies that have stood the test of time.”Zywokost podczas suszenia traci większość alkaloidów. Ja prywatnie stosuję żywokost, bardzo go cenię.

Henryk Różański recommended taking comfrey by mouth for throat and respiratory complaints.

„For throat catarrh, dry cough, hoarseness, and bronchitis, I recommend comfrey as a syrup, a decoction with honey, or a decoction with fruit juice. It will bring relief quickly. In my opinion, comfrey’s effects do not depend only on its mucilage, as I found in my practice when I tried to replace it with other mucilage-containing herbs.”Przy nieżycie gardła, suchym kaszlu, chrypce, zapaleniu oskrzeli polecam żywokost w postaci syropu, wywaru z miodkiem lub sokiem owocowym.

Henryk Różański states that comfrey is approved for sale but is intended for external use.

„Under Journal of Laws No. 76, item 682 – Annex 1, comfrey is approved for sale outside pharmacies (in herbal shops and even grocery stores), but it is intended for external use. In the second half of the 20th century, toxicological data were published about pyrrolizidine alkaloids found, among other things, in comfrey.”Zgodnie z Dz. U. Nr 76, poz. 682 – załącznik 1 żywokost jest dopuszczony do sprzedaży poza aptekami (sklepy zielarskie, a nawet ogólnospożywcze), jednakże przeznaczenie żywokostu jest zewnętrzne. W II połowie XX wieku opublikowano bowiem dane toksykologiczne dotyczące alkaloidów pirolizydynowych obecnych, między innymi w żywokoście.
Henryk Różański

Henryk Różański points out that experiments attributed toxic effects on the liver and carcinogenic effects to the alkaloids.

„Experiments have demonstrated the hepatotoxic and carcinogenic properties of these alkaloids. Commission E permits only external use of comfrey in the form of 5–20% ointments and gels. Of course, comfrey root is still used internally in unofficial folk medicine, as it is in some non-European countries.”Doświadczalnie wykazano hepatotoksyczne i kancerogenne właściwości tych alkaloidów. Komisja E dopuszcza jedynie zewnętrzne stosowanie żywokostu w formie 5-20% maści i żelu.

Henryk Różański criticizes the ban on oral use and claims that alkaloid levels may vary depending on where the plant grows.

„For example, the alkaloid content of comfrey growing in Poland cannot be compared with that of comfrey growing in Southern European countries or North America. But a decision has been made: comfrey must not be taken by mouth because it contains hepatotoxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids. It does not matter that such pyrrolizidine alkaloids are found in other plant materials in larger amounts, “permitted” by the EMEA and the famous Commission E.”Nie można np. porównywać zawartości alkaloidów w żywokoście rosnącego w Polsce i w krajach Europy Południowej, czy Ameryki Północnej.

Henryk Różański describes comfrey root decoction taken by mouth as having been used in the past for, among other things, digestive and respiratory complaints.

„100 or 200 years ago, and even earlier, a decoction of comfrey root (boiled for a few minutes) was given to promote sweating, protect mucous membranes, coat the digestive tract, soothe irritation of the stomach and intestines, and treat inflammation of the digestive tract and respiratory tract.”100, 200 lat temu i jeszcze dawniej odwar z korzenia żywokostu (gotować kilka minut) podawano jako środek pędzący poty, osłaniający błony śluzowe, powlekający przewód pokarmowy, łagodzący podrażnienia żołądka i jelit, przy stanach zapalnych przewodu pokarmowego i dróg oddechowych.

Henryk Różański gives a recipe for drinking root decoction several times a day.

„I once used comfrey vinegar as a mouth rinse (1 teaspoon to half a glass of water) for oral thrush, painful sores in the mouth, and gum inflammation after a visit to the dentist. The root decoction can be drunk several times a day, 100–150 ml at a time. Bring the roots to a boil and leave them covered for 30–40 minutes so that the mucilage passes into the water, then strain. If you boil them for a few minutes, you will get a decoction rich in silica.”Octem żywokostowym płukałem kiedyś jamę ustną (1 łyżeczka na pół szklanki wody) przy pleśniawkach i bolesnych nadżerkach w jamie ustnej oraz zapaleniu dziąseł po wizycie u dentysty. Wywar z korzenia można pić kilka razy dziennie po 100-150 ml. Korzenie zagotować i odstawić pod przykryciem na 30-40 minut, aby śluzy przeszły do wody, przecedzić. Gdy pogotujemy je kilka minut uzyskamy odwar bogaty w krzemionkę.

Henryk Różański describes a mixture containing comfrey root, taken by mouth, that is recommended for osteoarthritis.

„A mixture that may also help treat inflammation and degenerative changes in the joints is popular: Recipe: Swiss herbal tea blend recommended for osteoarthritis Comfrey root 20 g, nettle leaf 20 g, devil’s claw root 20 g, willow bark 20 g, dandelion root 20 g. Szwajcarska mieszanka ziołowa do zaparzania, polecana przy artrozie Korzeń żywokostu 20 g Liść pokrzywy 20 g Korzeń czarciego pazura (hakorośli) 20 g Kora wierzby 20 g Korzeń mniszka 20 g Zioła wymieszać.
Henryk Różański

Henryk Różański reports that comfrey syrup was withdrawn and describes the amount of alkaloids as very small.

„Overzealous Polish officials withdrew comfrey syrup from pharmacies, getting carried away by toxicology studies on pyrrolizidine alkaloids, of which comfrey contains “next to nothing.” For throat catarrh, dry cough, hoarseness, and bronchitis, I recommend comfrey as a syrup, a decoction with honey, or a decoction with fruit juice.”Nadgorliwi polscy urzędnicy wycofali syropek żywokostowy z aptek, podniecając się pracami z zakresu toksykologii alkaloidów pirolizydynowych, których w żywokoście jest jak “kot napłakał”.

In a study in rats, comfrey in homeopathic dilution increased bone formation around implants, especially in the early stage.

Aim of the study: This study evaluated the effect of Symphytum officinale in homeopathic potency (6cH), on the removal torque and radiographic bone density around titanium implants, inserted in rats tibiae.

Results: Both removal torque and radiographic bone density evaluation showed that S. officinale 6cH treatment enhanced bone formation around the micro-implants, mainly at 14 days. At 56 days, the radiographic bone density was higher in the treated group. We conclude that S. officinale 6cH enhances, principally at the early stages of osseointegration, bone formation around titanium implants in rats' tibiae, based on radiographic and mechanical analysis.

In rats with fractures, oral doses of comfrey were associated with faster callus formation and greater bone formation.

Aim of the study: Symphytum officinale (SO) is a medicinal plant. This study investigated if homoeopathic doses of SO could enhance fracture healing in adult male Wistar albino rats after induction of fracture.

Results: X-rays showed faster formation of callus (both soft and hard callus) in groups treated with MT and 6C doses of oral SO. Quantitative bone morphometry indicated enhanced osteogenesis in both soft (early) and hard (late) callus in animals treated with MT and 6C doses of SO. Immunohistochemical evaluation of soft (early) and hard (late) callus for Col1A1 and Osteocalcin revealed supporting osteogenic mechanisms. Serum levels of B- ALP and CTX indicated osteoanabolic activity in rats treated with the MT dose of SO. Oral administration of homoeopathic doses of Symphytum officinale (especially mother tincture dose), has the potential to enhance fracture healing in adult male Wistar albino rats.
