Sources: 3 · Article: 5 270 characters

The European Medicines Agency says that horehound may help loosen mucus when coughing due to a cold.

  • Its use is based on tradition, and a cough lasting more than one week requires consultation with a qualified healthcare professional.
  • The EMA recommends horehound only for adults and children over 12 years of age.
  • Henryk Różański says that an infusion can be made from 1.5 g of herb in 200 ml of boiling water and taken three times a day.

Its use for cough is based on tradition, and there is not enough evidence from clinical studies.

„This means that, despite a lack of sufficient evidence from clinical studies, these herbal medicines are likely to be effective, and there is evidence that they have been used safely in this way for at least 30 years (including at least 15 years in the EU).”Oznacza to, że pomimo braku wystarczających dowodów z badań klinicznych, skuteczność tych leków roślinnych jest prawdopodobna i istnieją dowody na to, że są one bezpiecznie stosowane w ten sposób od co najmniej 30 lat (w tym od co najmniej 15 lat w UE).

Horehound herb consists of the above-ground parts of the plant, which can be used to make, among other things, an infusion, powder, liquid extract or juice.

„Preparations made from horehound herb are obtained by cutting or crushing the above-ground parts of the plant into small pieces, or by making a liquid extract or pressing the juice. Herbal medicines containing horehound herb are usually available as ground herb for preparing a drinkable infusion, or in solid or liquid forms for oral use.”Preparaty z ziela szanty uzyskuje się poprzez rozdrabnianie (kruszenie na drobne kawałki) lub proszkowanie części nadziemnych rośliny, poprzez przygotowanie płynnego wyciągu lub wyciskanie soku. Leki roślinne zawierające ziele szanty są zazwyczaj dostępne w postaci zmielonej do przygotowania naparu do picia lub w postaci stałej bądź płynnej do przyjmowania doustnie.

We selected 1 studies with the best, positive results. This is a selection, not a full review of all research.

Total number of studies on this topic in PubMed: 3.

The review discusses the possible expectorant, cough-suppressing and anti-inflammatory mechanisms of herbs, but does not provide results here on common horehound.

Aim of the study: Various medicinal plants are used to treat coughs, based on tradition and long-term experience. However, the pharmacological principles behind their effects are much less well understood.

Results: Expectorant or antitussive effects, which may be accompanied by other effects, such as anti-inflammatory or antibacterial activity, are probably the most important in treating coughs. This review aims to summarize the current state of knowledge about the effects of medicinal plants or their constituents on cough, based on reliable pharmacological studies. First, it provides a comprehensive description of each effect to explain the possible mechanism of action in detail. It then summarizes and critically discusses results relating to individual plants and substances, based on pharmacological in vivo and in vitro studies.
