Losing weight without hunger — can you lose weight while eating until you’re full?

Sources: 13 · Article: 17 414 characters

Bracia Rodzeń claim that limiting carbohydrates can reduce hunger and speed up weight loss.

  • According to them, ketosis suppresses appetite and supports healthy weight loss.
  • They say that low-carbohydrate diets usually lead to greater weight loss than other diets for up to two years.
  • They stress that lasting weight loss requires changing the way you eat, and physical activity alone is not enough.

What the authors write

Bracia Rodzeń

According to Bracia Rodzeń, limiting carbohydrates can reduce hunger and speed up weight loss.

„The fewer carbohydrates you eat, the faster you will lose weight, get healthier, and reduce hunger. After you eat carbohydrates, the level of insulin in your blood rises significantly. Insulin is a hormone that signals the body to store energy. The more carbohydrates your food contains, the faster and more you will gain weight, develop insulin resistance, and get other metabolic diseases.”Im mniej węglowodanów, tym szybciej schudniesz/wyzdrowiejesz i zmniejszysz uczucie głodu.

Bracia Rodzeń claim that ketosis suppresses appetite and that this way of eating supports healthy weight loss.

„These are the facts: studies have shown that being in ketosis suppresses appetite. Why? Because by reducing the amount of carbohydrates you eat, you suppress your appetite, lower your insulin levels, and become a fat-burning machine. So it should come as no surprise that this lifestyle is the most effective for healthy weight loss.”Takie są fakty, badania wykazały, że bycie w ketozie hamuje apetyt. Dlaczego?

Bracia Rodzeń say that low-carbohydrate diets usually lead to greater weight loss than other diets for up to two years.

„Several meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials (RCTs), considered the strongest and most reliable evidence, have reached the same conclusion: low-carbohydrate diets usually lead to greater weight loss than other diets for up to two years.”Szereg metaanaliz przeprowadzonych w randomizowanych badaniach kontrolowanych (RCT), uważanych za najsilniejsze i najbardziej wiarygodne dowody, doprowadziło do tego samego wniosku: diety niskowęglowodanowe zwykle przewyższają inne diety w zakresie utraty wagi przez okres do dwóch lat.
Bracia Rodzeń

Bracia Rodzeń describe a study in which the group eating fewer carbohydrates lost more weight than the group eating less fat.

„In addition to losing 3.5 kg more than the low-fat group, the low-carbohydrate group also had greater improvements in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, triglycerides (TG), and other risk factors for cardiovascular disease. LINK – takes you to the source A comparison of the Atkins, Zone, Ornish, and LEARN diets in terms of weight change and related risk factors in overweight premenopausal women.”Oprócz utraty 3,5 kg więcej niż grupa o niskiej zawartości tłuszczu, grupa niskowęglowodanowa miała również większą poprawę w zakresie cholesterolu o wysokiej gęstości (HDL), trójglicerydów (TG) i innych czynników ryzyka chorób układu krążenia. Bracia Rodzeń

Bracia Rodzeń stress that lasting weight loss requires changing the way you eat, and physical activity alone is not enough.

„You can run Ironman races and work out 5 times a week, but if you don’t change the way you eat, you won’t lose weight in the long term. Of course, this is no reason not to exercise. Exercise won’t make you lose weight, but it will improve your fitness and the function of your lungs, heart, and muscles.”Możesz biegać Ironmany i ćwiczyć 5x w tygodniu, ale jeżeli nie zmienisz stylu jedzenia, to nie schudniesz długoterminowo. Nie jest to oczywiście powód, żeby nie ćwiczyć. Ćwicząc nie schudniesz, ale poprawisz wydolność organizmu, funkcjonalność płuc, sercai mięśni.

A meta-analysis found that a single serving of protein reduces hunger and increases fullness, but its long-term effects were limited.

Aim of the study: High-protein diets are considered as useful diets for weight loss programs. We collected randomized controlled trials that evaluated the effect of protein on appetite and gastrointestinal hormones involved in appetite regulation.

Results: In total, 49 publications for acute and 19 articles for long-term effect of protein were included. In acute interventions, protein decreased hunger (-7 mm visual analogue scale (VAS), P<0.001), desire to eat (-5 mm, P = 0.045), and prospective food consumption (-5 mm, P = 0.001) and increased fullness (10 mm, P<0.001) and satiety (4 mm, P<0.001). There was also a decrease in ghrelin (-20 pg/ml, P<0.001) and increase in cholecystokinin (30 pg/ml, P<0.001) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) (21 ng/ml, P<0.001), but no change in gastric inhibitory polypeptide and peptide YY was observed. Appetite markers were affected by protein doses < 35 g but ghrelin, cholecystokinin, and GLP-1 changed significantly after doses ≥ 35 g. Long-term ingestion of protein did not affect these outcomes, except for GLP-1 which showed a significant decrease. Results of this meta-analysis showed that acute ingestion of protein suppresses appetite, decreases ghrelin, and augments cholecystokinin and GLP-1.

A review found that a higher-protein diet increases fullness and may reduce later energy intake.

Aim of the study: For years, proponents of some fad diets have claimed that higher amounts of protein facilitate weight loss. Only in recent years have studies begun to examine the effects of high protein diets on energy expenditure, subsequent energy intake and weight loss as compared to lower protein diets.

Results: The weight of evidence also suggests that high protein meals lead to a reduced subsequent energy intake. Some evidence suggests that diets higher in protein result in an increased weight loss and fat loss as compared to diets lower in protein, but findings have not been consistent. In dietary practice, it may be beneficial to partially replace refined carbohydrate with protein sources that are low in saturated fat. Although recent evidence supports potential benefit, rigorous longer-term studies are needed to investigate the effects of high protein diets on weight loss and weight maintenance.

A meta-analysis found that, when calories were restricted, a high-protein diet led to slightly greater weight and fat loss than a standard-protein diet.

Aim of the study: It is currently unclear whether altering the carbohydrate-to-protein ratio of low-fat, energy-restricted diets augments weight loss and cardiometabolic risk markers.

Results: Mean (±SD) diet duration was 12.1 ± 9.3 wk. Compared with an SP diet, an HP diet produced more favorable changes in weighted mean differences for reductions in body weight (-0.79 kg; 95% CI: -1.50, -0.08 kg), fat mass (FM; -0.87 kg; 95% CI: -1.26, -0.48 kg), and triglycerides (-0.23 mmol/L; 95% CI: -0.33, -0.12 mmol/L) and mitigation of reductions in fat-free mass (FFM; 0.43 kg; 95% CI: 0.09, 0.78 kg) and REE (595.5 kJ/d; 95% CI: 67.0, 1124.1 kJ/d). Changes in fasting plasma glucose, fasting insulin, blood pressure, and total, LDL, and HDL cholesterol were similar across dietary treatments (P ≥ 0.20). Greater satiety with HP was reported in 3 of 5 studies. Compared with an energy-restricted SP diet, an isocalorically prescribed HP diet provides modest benefits for reductions in body weight, FM, and triglycerides and for mitigating reductions in FFM and REE.

In a study, semaglutide reduced energy intake and body weight, and participants felt less hungry and fuller.

Aim of the study: To investigate the effects of once-daily oral semaglutide 50 mg on energy intake, appetite, control of eating and gastric emptying.

Results: The relative change from baseline in ad libitum energy intake at week 20 (primary endpoint) was -39.2% points (95% confidence interval -59.0%, -19.4%) with semaglutide compared with placebo. Body weight was reduced by 9.8% with semaglutide and by 1.5% with placebo. Semaglutide reduced hunger, increased fullness and satiety, and was associated with fewer food cravings and better control of eating versus placebo. No statistically significant difference in gastric emptying was observed at week 20. In participants with obesity, once-daily oral semaglutide 50 mg reduced energy intake, body weight and appetite, and improved control of eating. There was no evidence of delayed gastric emptying at week 20, as measured through paracetamol absorption.

In a small study, a high-protein diet allowed participants to eat until they were full, while still reducing their spontaneous calorie intake and body weight.

Aim of the study: Ad libitum, low-carbohydrate diets decrease caloric intake and cause weight loss. It is unclear whether these effects are due to the reduced carbohydrate content of such diets or to their associated increase in protein intake. We tested the hypothesis that increasing the protein content while maintaining the carbohydrate content of the diet lowers body weight by decreasing appetite and spontaneous caloric intake.

Results: Satiety was markedly increased with the isocaloric high-protein diet despite an unchanged leptin AUC. Mean (+/-SE) spontaneous energy intake decreased by 441 +/- 63 kcal/d, body weight decreased by 4.9 +/- 0.5 kg, and fat mass decreased by 3.7 +/- 0.4 kg with the ad libitum, high-protein diet, despite a significantly decreased leptin AUC and increased ghrelin AUC. An increase in dietary protein from 15% to 30% of energy at a constant carbohydrate intake produces a sustained decrease in ad libitum caloric intake that may be mediated by increased central nervous system leptin sensitivity and results in significant weight loss. This anorexic effect of protein may contribute to the weight loss produced by low-carbohydrate diets.

A review suggests that fiber may reduce hunger and prolong fullness, although its effect on body weight is not always substantial.

Aim of the study: Dietary fibers prevent obesity through reduction of hunger and prolongation of satiety. A number of mechanical and endocrine signals from gastrointestinal tract are stimulated by fibers and their fermentation products, reach regions of brain involved in the regulation of appetite, and ultimately reduce food intake.

Results: Randomized controlled trials have shown reductions in energy intake and body weight along with increased satiation and reduced hunger following consumption of fibers. Prospective cohort studies have confirmed these results but the extent of weight loss in some studies has been small. Controversies exist between studies particularly for the effect of fibers on the gastrointestinal hormones, subsequent food intake, and the resultant weight loss. More studies are needed before a clear conclusion can be drawn especially for the effect of fibers on appetite-related hormones and weight loss.

Among women with overweight or obesity, a larger breakfast was associated with greater weight loss, less hunger, and greater fullness.

Aim of the study: Few studies examined the association between time-of-day of nutrient intake and the metabolic syndrome. Our goal was to compare a weight loss diet with high caloric intake during breakfast to an isocaloric diet with high caloric intake at dinner.

Results: The BF group showed greater weight loss and waist circumference reduction. Although fasting glucose, insulin, and ghrelin were reduced in both groups, fasting glucose, insulin, and HOMA-IR decreased significantly to a greater extent in the BF group. Mean triglyceride levels decreased by 33.6% in the BF group, but increased by 14.6% in the D group. Oral glucose tolerance test led to a greater decrease of glucose and insulin in the BF group. In response to meal challenges, the overall daily glucose, insulin, ghrelin, and mean hunger scores were significantly lower, whereas mean satiety scores were significantly higher in the BF group. High-calorie breakfast with reduced intake at dinner is beneficial and might be a useful alternative for the management of obesity and metabolic syndrome.

A review suggests that protein, low-fat dairy, eggs, legumes, oats, and rye may increase fullness, but this does not always lead to weight loss.

Aim of the study: Diets that induce negative energy balance continue to be the cornerstone of obesity management. However, long-term volitional reduction in energy intake is challenging. Functional foods that enhance satiety may have an important practical application in increasing compliance to weight loss diets and thereby promoting sustained weight loss. Here, we present recent advances in identifying common foods that increase satiety.

Results: Protein induces satiety in the short term. There is no clear evidence to indicate superiority of a specific protein source over the other. Low-fat dairy products, eggs, and legumes enhance satiety. Although energy dense, nuts have some satiety-inducing effect, when included in the diet by isocaloric replacement of usual foods. Satiety induced by dietary fiber sources, such as oats and rye, are well documented, but these sensations do not always translate into reductions in energy intake or body weight.
