Sources: 10 · Article: 10 715 characters

Andrzej Frydrychowski attributes a role in the formation of atherosclerotic plaque to elevated homocysteine.

  • Folic acid affects homocysteine levels, and a deficiency may cause cardiovascular disease.
  • Frydrychowski recommends testing homocysteine and supplementing with B vitamins when its level exceeds 10 mol/L.
  • He also recommends L-methylfolate because he believes that, in some people, a genetic defect makes it harder to absorb folic acid.
  • Henryk Różański describes how folic acid is converted into folinic acid, which is needed to synthesize nucleic acids and proteins.

Andrzej Frydrychowski

Andrzej Frydrychowski attributes a role in the formation of atherosclerotic plaque to elevated homocysteine.

„Cholesterol is not responsible for the formation of atherosclerotic plaque; an elevated homocysteine level is. Conventional medicine recommends lowering it below physiological levels, that is, to 200 mg/dl (below 5 mmol/L). We are prescribed statins, and only then do the complications begin.”Za powstawanie blaszki miażdżycowej nie odpowiada cholesterol, a podwyższony poziom homocysteiny. Medycyna klasyczna zaleca nam obniżać jego wartość poniżej wartości fizjologicznych, to jest 200 mg/dl (poniżej 5 mmol/l). Dostajemy receptę na statyny i dopiero wtedy zaczynają się powikłania.

Andrzej Frydrychowski recommends testing homocysteine and supplementing with B vitamins when its level exceeds 10 mol/L.

„We need to monitor the condition of our blood vessels to check whether inflammation of the endothelium has occurred, by testing homocysteine levels (the normal level is below 10 mol/L). If our level is above 10 mol/L, we should supplement our diet with B vitamins. It is also worth testing CRP levels (CRP is an acute-phase protein produced by the liver when inflammation is present).”Musimy monitorować stan naszych naczyń, czy nie doszło do stanu zapalnego śródbłonka, poprzez oznaczenie poziomu homocysteiny (norma to poniżej 10 mol/l).

Folic acid affects homocysteine levels, and a deficiency may cause cardiovascular disease.

„It affects homocysteine levels and prevents neural tube defects in the fetus. It can be found in dark green leafy vegetables (spinach, kale, lettuce), broccoli, asparagus, avocados, citrus fruits, whole grains, and yeast. A deficiency causes anemia, neurodegenerative disorders, or cardiovascular disease.”Wpływa na poziom homocysteiny i zapobiega wadom cewy nerwowej płodu. Możemy ją znaleźć w: ciemnozielonych warzywach liściastych (szpinak, jarmuż, sałata), brokułach, szparagach, awokado, owocach cytrusowych, zbożach z pełnego przemiału i w drożdżach. Jej niedobór powoduje: niedokrwistość, zaburzenia neurodegeneracyjne czy choroby układu krążenia.
Andrzej Frydrychowski

Andrzej Frydrychowski recommends L-methylfolate because he believes that, in some people, a genetic defect makes it harder to absorb folic acid.

„Some of us (about 40%) have a genetic defect that prevents methylation from taking place, so folic acid is not absorbed properly. Synthetic folic acid and natural folates are not active metabolic forms. It is therefore worth choosing L-methylfolate, which allows us to bypass this defect.”Niektórzy z nas (około 40%) mają błąd genetyczny, który powoduje, że metylacja nie zachodzi i kwas foliowy niewłaściwie się wchłania. Syntetyczny kwas foliowy i naturalne foliany nie są bowiem aktywnymi formami metobolicznymi. Warto więc wybierać L-metylowany kwas foliowy, dzięki czemu omijamy tę wadę.
Henryk Różański

Folic acid is converted into folinic acid, which is needed to synthesize nucleic acids and proteins.

„Folic acid, or pteroylglutamic acid, is converted in the human body into its active form, folinic acid. Folinic acid is a coenzyme essential for the synthesis of nucleic acids and proteins. It is necessary for cell division, growth, tissue development, and regeneration.”Kwas foliowy, czyli pteroiloglutaminowy przekształcany jest w organizmie człowieka do czynnej formy – kwasu folinowego. Kwas folinowy to koenzym niezbędny do syntezy kwasów nukleinowych i białek. Warunkuje podział komórek, proces wzrostu, rozwoju tkanek oraz procesy regeneracji.

The analysis indicates that B vitamins, which lower homocysteine, reduced the risk of stroke in people with normal kidney function who were not taking high doses of cyanocobalamin.

Aim of the study: B vitamin therapy lowers plasma total homocysteine concentrations, and might be a beneficial intervention for stroke prevention; however, cyanocobalamin (a form of vitamin B12) can accelerate decline in renal function and increase the risk of cardiovascular events in patients with impaired renal function.

Results: Although early trials did not show benefit in reduction of stroke, these results might have been due to harm in participants with impaired renal function. In patients with diabetic nephropathy, cyanocobalamin is harmful, whereas B vitamins appear to reduce cardiovascular events in study participants with normal renal function. Our meta-analysis of individual patient data from two large trials of B vitamin therapy (VISP and VITATOPS) indicates that patients with impaired renal function who are exposed to high-dose cyanocobalamin do not benefit from therapy with B vitamins for the prevention of stroke (risk ratio 1·04, 95% CI 0·84-1·27), however, patients with normal renal function who are not exposed to high-dose cyanocobalamin benefit significantly from this treatment (0.78, 0·67-0·90; interaction p=0·03).

The review reports that supplementation with folate and other B vitamins lowers homocysteine and improves endothelial function.

Aim of the study: Hyperhomocysteinaemia has been identified from epidemiological studies as an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Plasma total homocysteine is elevated in renal impairment, which may be a consequence of cardiovascular disease.

Results: However, it is also likely that plasma total homocysteine promotes cardiovascular disease, particularly through effects on endothelial function and coagulation pathways. It is influenced by complex interactions between B-group vitamins, especially folate, and polymorphisms in various genes involved in homocysteine metabolism. Supplementation with folate and other B-group vitamins effectively lowers total plasma homocysteine and improves endothelial function. The results of clinical trials to assess effects on cardiovascular morbidity and mortality are awaited.

In a study of rats with atherosclerosis, folic acid lowered homocysteine and improved antioxidant capacity.

Aim of the study: Atherosclerosis is a chronic disease that can seriously endanger human life. Folic acid supplementation modulates several disorders, including atherosclerosis, via its antiapoptotic and antioxidative properties.

Results: The results show aggravated atherosclerotic lesions in the HF+DEF group. Folic acid supplementation increased concentrations of serum folate. Further, folic acid supplementation increased high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, decreased plasma homocysteine levels, and improved antioxidant capacity in atherogenic rats. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that folic acid alleviates atherogenesis by reducing plasma homocysteine levels and improving antioxidant capacity in rats fed a high-fat diet.

In pregnant women, both folic acid and 5-MTHF increased folate levels and lowered homocysteine.

Aim of the study: Folate supplementation is critical for preventing neural tube defects, while 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF), the predominant circulating form of folate, may offer a pharmacokinetic advantage. However, comparative data in this populations remain limited.

Results: Ninety-six participants completed the trial (48 per group). Both interventions significantly increased RBC folate (FA: +262.00 ng/mL [IQR: 245.50]; 5-MTHF: +244.50 ng/mL [IQR: 233.50]; p = 0.714) and reduced plasma homocysteine with no significant differences between groups. However, 5-MTHF supplementation resulted in a greater increase in plasma 5-MTHF compared to the FA group (Median change: +5.67 ng/mL [IQR: 5.93] vs. +3.12 ng/mL [IQR: 6.47]; unadjusted p = 0.027; baseline-adjusted p = 0.055), a difference of borderline statistical significance. Median UMFA accumulation was approximately twice as high in the FA group, but the difference failed to reach significance due to non-normal distribution. The bioavailability of 5-MTHF was comparable to folic acid across different BMI categories, with a stronger trend toward higher bioavailability among normal-weight women (p = 0.182) than overweight women (p = 0.304).

„It impacts risk by raising homocysteine, a toxic amino acid that damages the brain and blood vessels. Having a raised homocysteine level increases risk for cerebrovascular dysfunction 17-fold. [12] Since methylation is needed to make phospholipids, biochemicals essential for the brain also found in eggs and fish, having a poor diet in this respect creates more methylation demand and, consequently, greater need for B vitamins. In a placebo controlled study of older people with mild cognitive impairment, about a third of participants had the MTHFR variant that increases Alzheimer's risk.”It impacts risk by raising homocysteine, a toxic amino acid that damages the brain and blood vessels.
