COVID vaccines and cancer — what do critics say?

Sources: 7 · Article: 9 947 characters

Jerzy Zięba points out that the effect of the vaccine on the possibility of cancer developing remains unknown.

  • Prof. Sucharit Bhakdi cites pathologists’ observations of an increase in the number and malignancy of cancers since COVID-19 vaccinations began, as well as recurrences of diseases previously considered cured.
  • Bhakdi interprets these observations as a sign of significant weakening of the immune system after vaccination and considers frequent booster doses a possible threat to public health.

What the authors write

Jerzy Zięba

The vaccine leaflet states that its effect on the possibility of cancer developing remains unknown.

„As in any vaccine leaflet, it says that the vaccine’s effects on fertility in both sexes, the possibility of cancer occurring, and the possible development of autoimmune diseases are unknown. In other words? The leaflet says: “In reality, we know nothing about how this vaccine works.””Jak w każdej ulotce dotyczącej szczepień wskazuje ona na to, że nieznany jest jej wpływ na płodność obu płci, na możliwość występowania nowotworów czy na możliwe wystąpienie chorób z grupy autoagresji. Czyli? Ulotka mówi: „o działaniu tej szczepionki, tak naprawdę niczego nie wiemy”.
Prof. Sucharit Bhakdi

Prof. Sucharit Bhakdi cites pathologists’ observations of an increase in the number and malignancy of cancers since COVID-19 vaccinations began, as well as recurrences of diseases previously considered cured.

„Several experienced pathologists have shared their observations on rising case numbers and increased malignancy of cancers since the beginning of the COVID-19 vaccinations (see e.g. [94]). Many such cases seem to involve the reactivation of cancers, sometimes after decades, which had been considered cured. The mechanisms of cellular immunity that keep cancer cells in check are basically the same as those which control and combat viral infections. Therefore, these reports also point to significant immunosuppression after vaccination.”Several experienced pathologists have shared their observations on rising case numbers and increased malignancy of cancers since the beginning of the COVID-19 vaccinations (see e.g. [94]). Prof. Sucharit Bhakdi

Prof. Sucharit Bhakdi interprets these observations as pointing to significant weakening of the immune system after vaccination.

„Therefore, these reports also point to significant immunosuppression after vaccination. 3.5.2 Possible mechanisms. As noted above, immunosuppression is not yet commonly acknowledged as a significant problem caused by the COVID-19 vaccinations, and we are not aware of any published 3 Immunological mechanisms of harm by mRNA vaccines”Therefore, these reports also point to significant immunosuppression after vaccination. 3.5.2 Possible mechanisms. Prof. Sucharit Bhakdi

Prof. Sucharit Bhakdi considers frequent booster doses a possible threat to public health.

„We stress again that any form of genotoxicity, at any dose, implies a certain risk of cancer and leukemia. Thus, the prospect of frequently repeated COVID “booster shots,” as well as of extending mRNA technology to vaccines against other pathogens or non-infectious diseases, conjures up a significant public health risk.”We stress again that any form of genotoxicity, at any dose, implies a certain risk of cancer and leukemia. We selected 3 studies with the best, positive results. This is a selection, not a full review of all research.

Total number of studies on this topic in PubMed: 4 798.

The review collected reports of cancers appearing after vaccination or infection, but most of the data came from case reports and do not prove a causal link.

Aim of the study: A growing number of peer-reviewed publications have reported diverse cancer types appearing in temporal association with COVID-19 vaccination or infection. To characterize the nature and scope of these reports, a systematic literature search from January 2020 to October 2025 was conducted based on specified eligibility criteria.

Results: Most of the studies documented hematologic malignancies (non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, cutaneous lymphomas, leukemias), solid tumors (breast, lung, melanoma, sarcoma, pancreatic cancer, and glioblastoma), and virus-associated cancers (Kaposi and Merkel cell carcinoma). Across reports, several recurrent themes emerged: (1) unusually rapid progression, recurrence, or reactivation of preexisting indolent or controlled disease, (2) atypical or localized histopathologic findings, including involvement of vaccine injection sites or regional lymph nodes, and (3) proposed immunologic links between acute infection or vaccination and tumor dormancy, immune escape, or microenvironmental shifts. The predominance of case-level observations and early population-level data demonstrates an early phase of potential safety-signal detection.

The review describes observational associations between mRNA vaccination and better survival during immunotherapy, but notes that some of the effect may be due to selection bias.

Aim of the study: Since 2020, billions of doses of COVID-19 messenger RNA (mRNA) lipid nanoparticle vaccines have been administered worldwide, generating one of the largest pharmacovigilance databases for a modern therapeutic class.

Results: Here, we examine the mechanistic basis and available evidence for the repurposing of licensed COVID-19 mRNA vaccines as antigen-agnostic immunomodulators. We identified five candidate contexts for prospective evaluation-namely, (1) PD-L1-negative non-small cell lung cancer initiating ICI therapy, (2) perioperative immune dysfunction in major cardiac surgery, (3) chronic hepatitis B, (4) chronic HIV with persistent immune exhaustion, and (5) sepsis-induced immunoparalysis. Methodological foundations for confirmatory assessment-comprising target trial emulation, Mendelian randomization, and pragmatic trial design-are now sufficiently developed to enable implementation. Prospective evaluation of the antigen-agnostic repurposing hypothesis is operationally feasible, albeit constrained by residual confounding and uncertainty about the durability of vaccine-induced innate reprogramming.

Among patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors, vaccination was associated with lower mortality, but the results did not point to a specific effect of mRNA vaccines.

Aim of the study: Recent studies proposed that SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccination may sensitize tumors to immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) therapy through immune modulation. Using 100% national Medicare fee-for-service claims data, we evaluated whether survival differences among vaccinated patients receiving ICIs were specific to mRNA vaccines.

Results: Using 100% national Medicare fee-for-service claims data, we evaluated whether survival differences among vaccinated patients receiving ICIs were specific to mRNA vaccines. Among 121,676 beneficiaries initiating systemic anticancer therapy, including 10,824 initiating ICIs, vaccination near treatment initiation was associated with lower mortality across mRNA COVID-19, adenoviral COVID-19, and influenza vaccines. We found that survival associations and formal vaccine-ICI interaction effects were similar across vaccine platforms. These findings suggest that currently available population-level survival data do not isolate an mRNA-specific tumor-sensitization mechanism.
