Henryk Różański

Sage has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic effects, and the throat can be rinsed with an infusion or decoction.

„A decoction or infusion of sage can be used to rinse the genitals in cases of inflammation, and to rinse the mouth and throat and the ears. The eyes can also be rinsed with a weak infusion in cases of inflammation and infection. Apply sage extract and sage tincture to affected areas—erosions, canker sores, and painful sores—on the gums, tongue, and genitals.”Odwarem i naparem z szałwi można opłukiwac narządy płciowe przy stanach zapalnych, płukac jamę ustna i gardło, uszy, ponadto przepłukiwać oczy (słaby napar) przy zapaleniu i infekcjach. Ekstraktem szałwiowym i nalewką szałwiową smarować (pędzlować) chorobowe zmiany (nadżerki, afty, bolesne ranki) na dziąsłach, języku i narządach płciowych.

Henryk Różański describes fresh sage preparations as useful for sore throats.

„Fresh sage preparations have a stronger antiseptic effect. They work very well for runny nose, colds, bronchitis, inflammation of the throat and larynx, flu, and digestive disorders. Before brewing or steeping in vinegar, oil, or alcohol, tear the sage leaves or whole shoots into pieces or crush them with a pestle.”Świeże przetwory z szławii są silniejsze w działaniu antyseptycznym.

Henryk Różański gives a recipe for an infusion made from the leaves or herb and recommends gargling every two hours.

„Sage infusion—infusum Salviae: Use 1–2 tablespoons of the herb or leaves per cup of boiling water. Cover, leave for 20 minutes, then strain. Drink 1 cup twice a day for excessive sweating; drink 100 ml four times a day for inflammation of the digestive tract and upper respiratory tract. Henryk Różański also describes a tincture diluted with water for gargling.

„Use 5 ml in 1/2 cup of water for gargles, compresses, and washing. Use undiluted tincture to apply to canker sores, cracks at the corners of the mouth, cold sores, ulcers, inflamed gums, and abscesses; it can also be rubbed into bruises and insect bites. In patients with acute viral pharyngitis, a spray containing 15% sage extract reduced throat pain more effectively than a placebo.

Aim of the study: This randomised, double-blind, parallel group phase II/III study with adaptive two-stage design and interim analysis compared the efficacy and tolerability of spray (containing a Salvia officinalis fluid extract) against placebo in the treatment of patients with acute viral pharyngitis. -

Results: Following the interim analyses of the first study part the 15 % spray containing 140 microl sage extract per dose was the most promising preparation for the second study part (main study) whereas for the 30% and the 5% preparation results made superiority over placebo unlikely in the final analysis. Overall, the 15 % spray was significantly superior to placebo for the primary efficacy variable with regard to a reduction of the throat pain intensity score. Only minor side effects such as dry pharynx or burning of mild intensity were seen. - The efficacy and tolerability profile of a 15 % sage spray indicated that this preparation provides a convenient and safe treatment for patients with acute pharyngitis. A symptomatic relief occurred within the first two hours after first administration and was statistically significantly superior to placebo.

A sage and echinacea spray relieved symptoms of acute sore throat about as effectively as a chlorhexidine and lidocaine spray.

Aim of the study: The aim of this trial was to assess the relative efficacy of a sage/echinacea spray and a chlorhexidine/lidocaine spray in the treatment of acute sore throats.

Results: The echinacea/sage treatment exhibited similar efficacy to the chlorhexidine/lidocaine treatment in reducing sore throat symptoms during the first 3 days (P(x<Y) = .5083). Response rates after 3 days were 63.8% in the echinacea/sage group and 57.8% in the chlorhexidine/lidocaine group. For all secondary parameters, such as time to becoming symptom free, throat pain, and global assessments of efficacy by the physician and patient, no difference between the two treatments was seen. They were both very well tolerated. An echinacea/sage preparation is as efficacious and well tolerated as a chlorhexidine/lidocaine spray in the treatment of acute sore throats.
