In folk medicine, asarabacca continued to be used as a medicine, in small doses.

„Asarabacca herb is still used as a medicine in folk medicine. Asarabacca is considered an effective and potent remedy, used in small doses. It is one of my favorite medicinal plants, and one I can rely on. I must point out that there are varieties of asarabacca that contain no beta-asarone at all. However, the pharmaceutical industry and state pharmaceutical institutions have done nothing to introduce these varieties into medicines; the result was a ruling to remove the herb from official formularies and criticize the raw material.”W medycynie ludowej ziele kopytnika nadal funkcjonuje jako lek. Kopytnik należy do środków skutecznych i silnych w działaniu, stosowanych w małych dawkach. Zaliczam go do moich ulubionych roślin leczniczych, na których można polegać. Jestem zobowiązany powiadomić, że istnieją odmiany kopytnika pozbawione zupełnie beta-azaronu, jednakże przemysł farmaceutyczny i farmaceutyczne instytucje państwowe nie zrobiły nic, aby wprowadzić takie odmiany do leków; nastąpił więc wyrok – skreślenie z receptur i krytyka surowca.

Asarabacca was traditionally used for pain and phlegm, and to relieve complaints associated with cold.

Aim of the study: This article reviews the ethnopharmacology, phytochemistry, pharmacology, toxicology and metabolic kinetics related research of genus Asarum to evaluate its ethnopharmacology use and future opportunities for research.

Results: The genus Asarum has played an important role in herbal treatment. At present, more than 277 compounds have been isolated or identified from genus Asarum. Among them, volatile oil and lignans are the major active constituents and important chemotaxonomic markers. Modern pharmacological studies indicated that genus Asarum and its active compounds possess a wide range of pharmacological effects, especially analgesic, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, cardiovascular protection, antitussive, immunosuppressive, anti-tumor, and microbicidal activities. Based on this review, therapeutic potential of genus Asarum has been demonstrated with the pharmacological effects on inflammation, CNS, respiratory regulation, cardiovascular diseases, cancer and microbial infection. The available literature showed that the major activities of the genus Asarum can be attributed to the active lignans and essential oils.

Asarum sieboldii has been used in traditional medicine for conditions including toothache, cough, asthma, and sinusitis.

Aim of the study: Asarum sieboldii, a species of wild ginger native to East Asia, has long been recognised as an important herb in Asian traditional medicine. It has been applied in the treatment of toothache, cough, asthma, and sinusitis.

Results: With these therapeutic benefits, A. sieboldii presents a promising natural alternative or a complementary option to conventional dental treatments, capable of addressing a wide range of oral health conditions. The findings from this review could serve as a solid foundation for future research, supporting the development of high-quality, safe, and effective A. sieboldii-based products in dentistry and oral health.

In a study, an extract of Asarum sieboldii root relieved pain and inflammation.

Aim of the study: The radix of Asarum sieboldii Miq. (AR) has been used to treat pain and inflammation in Korea.

Results: These results suggest that AR extract have opioid-like activity. It also exerted significant anti-inflammatory effects in the rat paw edema assay. AR extract caused inhibition in the bradykinin (BK)/histamine-mediated ileum contractions of guinea pig. Taken together, these results provide evidence that the methanol extract of AR exerts anti-nociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects by activating opioid receptor as well as by inhibiting bradykinin and histamine-mediated actions.
