Lily of the valley—a beautiful flower that heals the heart but can kill?

Sources: 2 · Article: 4 216 characters

Henryk Różański states that lily of the valley increases the force of heart muscle contractions and is recommended for mild heart failure.

  • Its glycosides break down quickly in the body, build up less than foxglove glycosides, and are well tolerated.
  • Lily-of-the-valley preparations should not be combined with calcium or reserpine.

What the authors write

Henryk Różański

Lily of the valley contains cardiac glycosides, which account for 0.2–0.5% of the raw material.

„The content of cardenolide glycosides in the raw material is 0.2 to 0.5%. The cardiac glycosides in lily of the valley include: convalloside, whose aglycone is strophanthidin; convallatoxin, whose aglycone is strophanthidin; desglucocheirotoxin, whose aglycone is strophanthidin; convallatoxol, whose aglycone is strophanthidol; and lukundjoside, whose aglycone is bipindogenin.”Zawartość glikozydów kardenolidowych w surowcu wynosi od 0,2 do 0,5%. Do glikozydów nasercowych konwalii należą: konwalozyd (convallosid) – aglikonem jest strofantydyna, konwalatoksyna (convallatoxin) – aglikonem jest strofantydyna, dezglukocheirotoksyna (desglucocheirotoxin) – aglikonem jest strofantydyna, konwalatoksol (convallatoxol) – aglikonem jest strofantydol, lukundjozyd (lukundjosid) – aglikonem jest bipindogenina.

Lily of the valley increases the force of heart muscle contractions and is recommended for mild forms of heart failure.

„It increases the force of heart muscle contractions and has calming, anti-neurotic, diuretic, and anti-swelling effects. Lily-of-the-valley glycosides break down quickly in the body and bind to plasma albumins only to a small extent. They do not build up to the same degree as foxglove glycosides.”Zwiększa siłę skurczową mięśnia sercowego, działa uspokajająco, przeciwnerwicowo, moczopędnie i przeciwobrzękowo. Glikozydy konwalii szybko ulegają rozkładowi w ustroju i w małym stopniu łączą się z albuminami osocza. Nie ulegają kumulacji w tak dużym stopniu jak glikozydy naparstnicy.

Lily-of-the-valley glycosides break down quickly in the body, build up less than foxglove glycosides, and are described as well tolerated.

„Lily-of-the-valley glycosides break down quickly in the body and bind to plasma albumins only to a small extent. They do not build up to the same degree as foxglove glycosides. They are well tolerated. They improve peripheral circulation and have a spasm-relieving effect on the smooth muscles of the urinary tract and digestive tract.”Glikozydy konwalii szybko ulegają rozkładowi w ustroju i w małym stopniu łączą się z albuminami osocza.

Lily-of-the-valley preparations should not be combined with calcium or reserpine.

„They should not be combined with calcium or reserpine. Lily-of-the-valley tincture — Tinctura Convallariae 1:5 — is very effective. It is best taken at a dose of 20–30 drops 2–3 times a day. Infusum Convallariae (lily-of-the-valley infusion), 5%: 2 tablespoons of the infusion 3 times a day.”Nie należy ich łączyć z wapniem i rezerpiną. Nalewka konwaliowa – Tinctura Convallariae 1:5 jest bardzo efektywna w działaniu. Najlepiej ja podawać w dawce 20-30 kropli 2-3 razy dziennie. Infusum Convallariae (napar konwaliowy) 5%: 2 łyżki naparu 3 razy dziennie.

The study found that combining a lily-of-the-valley glycoside with a beta blocker preserved its beneficial effect on heart contractility without reducing its inotropic effect.

Aim of the study: Radiocardiography was used in 234 patients to explore the effect of corglycon, a glycoside drug obtained from Convallaria L., cardiac glycoside (CG) digoxin, beta-adrenoblockers (BAB) anapriline and trasicor, and combinations of CG and BAB on the minute and stroke volumes of the circulation and heart rate.

It has been shown that administration of CG coupled with BAB increasing the tolerance to the cardiotoxic effect of CG does not entail a reduction of their beneficial inotropic action.
