Osteopathic care may relieve pain, support fetal development, make childbirth easier and speed up recovery after birth.

„Osteopathic care is not only about helping with pain during pregnancy. Osteopaths also aim to support optimal fetal development, make the birth process easier and speed up postpartum recovery. In the first trimester of pregnancy, slight changes in the position of the pelvis and spine can be observed.”Opieka osteopatyczna to nie tylko pomoc w dolegliwościach bólowych, występujących w czasie ciąży.

An osteopath can assess spinal mobility early in pregnancy to identify restrictions that could later increase pressure, tension and pain.

„Assessing spinal mobility early in pregnancy can help identify potential restrictions that may lead to increased pressure and tension later in pregnancy, causing pain. By understanding how these changes develop, an osteopath can provide appropriate care to help reduce pain and make it easier for the pregnant woman to get through to childbirth.”Analiza ruchomości kręgosłupa we wczesnej ciąży może pomóc zidentyfikować potencjalne ograniczenia, które w zaawansowanej ciąży mogą doprowadzić do zwiększonych nacisków i napięć, powodując tym samym dolegliwości bólowe. Znając mechanizm powstających zmian osteopata może prowadzić odpowiednie postępowanie ograniczając występowanie dolegliwości bólowych i ułatwiające ciężarnej doczekanie porodu.

Manual therapy offers ways to relax tense tissues and mobilize overworked joints that can be performed safely during pregnancy.

„Unfortunately, doctors may not know that manual therapy offers hundreds of ways to relax tense tissues and mobilize overworked joints that can be performed safely during pregnancy. Importantly, pregnant women are generally young and healthy, and they feel the effects of this kind of therapy very quickly.”Lekarze nie wiedzą niestety, że w terapii manualnej istnieją setki sposobów na rozluźnienie napiętych tkanek oraz mobilizację przeciążonych stawów, które można bezpiecznie wykonywać w czasie ciąży. Co ważne, kobiety w ciąży to generalnie młode i zdrowe osoby, które bardzo szybko odczuwają efekty takiej terapii.

Jan Jaśkowski presents physical exercise as a way to make childbirth easier and speed up recovery afterward.

„My lecturer at university used to say that childbirth is the hardest day of physical work in a woman’s life, and that it is our duty as osteopaths to prepare women for this work. Nobody takes part in a marathon without proper training. Yet many women do not prepare their bodies for childbirth. Appropriate physical exercise not only makes childbirth easier, but also speeds up recovery afterward.”Mój wykładowca na studiach powtarzał, że poród to najcięższy dzień fizycznej pracy w życiu kobiety i naszym obowiązkiem, jako osteopatów jest przygotować je do tej pracy.

Preparing before pregnancy may help prevent pain, and you should not wait for symptoms to go away on their own before starting treatment.

„That is why, if you are planning a pregnancy, it is worth consulting an appropriate rehabilitation specialist. Proper preparation can help prevent potential pain. Myth 2. Back pain goes away on its own after childbirth. Doctors often reassure their patients by telling them that the pain will go away after childbirth.”Dlatego już planując ciążę warto skonsultować się z odpowiednim rehabilitantem. Właściwe przygotowanie pomoże uniknąć potencjalnych dolegliwości bólowych. Mit 2. Bóle kręgosłupa samoczynnie ustępują po porodzie. Lekarze często uspokajają swoje pacjentki mówiąc, że po porodzie dolegliwości bólowe ustąpią.

A review found that manual therapies, including osteopathy, may reduce back and pelvic pain during pregnancy compared with usual care or relaxation, but not compared with sham therapy.

Aim of the study: Low back pain and pelvic girdle pain are common in pregnancy, and women commonly use complementary manual therapies such as massage, spinal manipulation, chiropractic, and osteopathy to manage their symptoms. The aim of this systematic review was to critically assess and synthesize the best available evidence on the effectiveness of manual therapies for managing pregnancy-related low back and pelvic pain.

Results: Of 348 nonduplicate records, 11 articles reporting on 10 studies involving a total of 1198 pregnant women were included in this meta-analysis. The therapeutic interventions mainly involved massage and osteopathic manipulative therapy. Meta-analyses found that manual therapy had positive effects on pain intensity compared with usual care and relaxation, but not compared with sham interventions. Acceptability did not differ between manual therapy and usual care or sham interventions. At present, there is limited evidence to support the use of complementary manual therapies as an option for managing low back and pelvic pain during pregnancy. Given the lack of an effect compared with sham interventions, further high-quality research is needed to determine causal effects, the influence of the therapist on perceived treatment effectiveness, and the appropriate dose-response of complementary manual therapies for low back and pelvic pain outcomes during pregnancy.
