Sea squill — a forgotten heart medicine or rat poison?

Sources: 2 · Article: 6 674 characters

Sea squill was used for circulatory failure, especially when it caused swelling or ascites.

  • Its preparations were also given for arrhythmia, angina, atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, myocarditis, and conduction disorders.
  • Scillarenes were thought to increase the force of the heart’s contractions and its cardiac output, and to lower venous pressure.

What the authors write

Henryk Różański

Sea squill was used mainly for swelling associated with heart and kidney failure, and for heart failure itself.

„It was also included in city pharmacopoeias, such as those of Edinburgh and London. It played a major role in medicine and was used mainly to treat swelling caused by heart and kidney failure, bronchitis, heart failure, asthma, pneumonia, and shortness of breath.”Była również w farmakopeach miejskich, np. edynburska, londyńska.

It was especially recommended for right ventricular failure with kidney congestion and swelling, particularly when accompanied by ascites.

„Sea squill was especially recommended for treating right ventricular heart failure accompanied by passive congestion of the kidney and swelling of the skin, particularly when accompanied by ascites. It was useful for treating heart failure associated with liver cirrhosis, Graves’ disease, emphysema, and curvature of the spine, as well as in older people.”Cebula morska była szczególnie polecana w leczeniu niewydolności prawej komory serca połączonej z biernym przekrwieniem nerki i obrzękiem skórnym, a zwłaszcza z puchliną brzuszną.

Scillaren Sandoz was used for arrhythmia, angina, atherosclerosis, and high blood pressure.

„It was used for arrhythmia, angina, atherosclerosis, and high blood pressure. It was produced as tablets and ampoules. Other popular sea squill preparations included Scillikardin (used for irregular heartbeat, myocarditis, and conduction disorders in the atrioventricular system), in drops and tablets, and Scilloral, in capsules.”Stosowany był przy arytmii, dusznicy bolesnej, miażdżycy, nadciśnieniu.

Scillarenes increased the force of contraction of the heart muscle and cardiac output, and lowered venous pressure.

„Scillarenes increase the force of contraction of the heart muscle and cardiac output. They lower venous pressure. Modern preparations containing proscillaridin include Talusin (Abbott), 0.25 mg dragees, and Polish-made Proscillaridin, film-coated tablets.”Scylareny zwiększają siłę skurczową mięśnia sercowego i pojemność minutową serca. Obniżają ciśnienie żylne. Do współczesnych preparatów zawierających proscylarydynę należą Talusin (Abbott) – draż. 0,25 mg i Proscillaridin polskiej produkcji – tabl. powl.

Scillarenes constricted the abdominal arteries and raised arterial blood pressure.

Sea squill’s effect on the heart was compared with that of foxglove and considered much safer.

„It mildly irritates the kidneys, acting as a diuretic and reducing swelling. It clearly increases urine production, even in healthy people. It increases the excretion of nitrogenous metabolites and sodium chloride. It does not accumulate in the body. It acts on the heart in a similar way to foxglove and is much safer than it.”Drażni z lekka nerki, działając moczopędnie i przeciwbrzękowo. Pobudza wyraźnie diurezę, nawet u osób zdrowych. Wzmaga wydalanie metabolitów azotowych i chlorku sodu.

Scilliroside from the red variety of sea squill also had a heart-stimulating effect, similar to scillaren A.

„Scilliroside in the red variety of sea squill is especially potent against rats. It also has a heart-stimulating effect, similar to scillaren A. Scillaren A is the main glycoside in the white variety of sea squill (varium alba). In dilute acids, it breaks down into scillaren A and scillabiose (a disaccharide made up of glucose and rhamnose).”Scillirozyd zawarty w odmianie czerwonej morskiej cebuli jest szczególnie silny wobec szczurów.

Historically, sea squill was used for swelling that could be associated with heart failure.

Aim of the study: For centuries, drugs that increase the force of contraction of the failing heart have been used to treat congestive heart failure (dropsy). The cardiac effect is due to their cardiac glycoside content.

Results: Scientific advances have led to an understanding of cardiac muscle contractility and of the Na,K pump as the cellular receptor for the inotropic action of digitalis. Examination of possible endogenous ligands for this receptor revealed endogenous cardiac glycosides with structures similar or identical to those found in digitalis, strophanthus, and squill. Increased concentrations of these glycosides are found in patients with heart failure. Further research is needed to determine whether glycoside secretion might be a physiological response to reduced cardiac output.
