It also lists uses for ulcers, inflammatory bowel conditions, and urinary and respiratory complaints.

  • It attributes different uses to the infusion, tincture, and fresh herb; dried herb loses many of its medicinal properties.
  • Candytuft was also listed among plants intended for making medicines, not food or dietary supplements.

Candytuft was listed among plants considered strictly medicinal and intended for making medicines.

„EFSA has even classified some plants as strictly medicinal products that should not be included in food or dietary supplements, for example greater celandine, columbine, coltsfoot, mistletoe, guelder rose, tansy, rue, madder, buckthorn, kava pepper, pokeweed, boldo, butterbur, yohimbe, bugleweed, candytuft, common holly, hellebore, goldenseal, ivy, dog’s mercury, Gymnema, black cohosh… The plants listed as examples are reserved for the production of medicines.”Niektóre EFSA wręcz uznała za środki typowo lecznicze, które nie powinny znaleźć się w żywności i suplementach diety, np. glistnik jaskółcze ziele, orlik, podbiał, jemioła, kalina, wrotycz, ruta, marzanna, kruszyna, pieprz metystynowy, szkarłatka, boldowiec (boldo), lepiężnik, johimbowiec (yohimba), karbieniec, ubiorek, ostrokrzew pospolity, ciemiernik, gorzknik, bluszcz, konitrut, Gymnema, pluskwica… Te przykładowo wymienione rośliny zarezerwowane zostały do produkcji leków.

The review found that Iberogast, a product containing candytuft, reduced symptoms of functional dyspepsia.

Aim of the study: A systematic review of the efficacy and tolerability of the herbal combination Iberogast (Iberis amara planta totalis, Chelidonii herba, Cardui mariae fructus, Melissae folium, Carvi fructus, Liquiritiae radix, Angelicae radix, Matricariae flos, Menthae piperitae folium) was conducted in patients with functional dyspepsia.

Results: A systematic review of the efficacy and tolerability of the herbal combination Iberogast (Iberis amara planta totalis, Chelidonii herba, Cardui mariae fructus, Melissae folium, Carvi fructus, Liquiritiae radix, Angelicae radix, Matricariae flos, Menthae piperitae folium) was conducted in patients with functional dyspepsia. Three placebo-controlled trials and one reference-controlled trial showed a statistically significant and therapeutically relevant reduction in gastrointestinal symptom scores in 595 patients. Therapeutic efficacy was also found in one observational study (2267 patients). Based on the available evidence, Iberogast seems to be an effective herbal preparation for reducing dyspepsia symptoms, without central nervous system side effects.

In a study, the product STW 5, which contains candytuft, improved symptoms of functional dyspepsia more than placebo.

Aim of the study: Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a complex condition with a variety of symptoms in the upper abdomen. There is currently no standard treatment for FD. This multicenter, placebo-controlled, double-blind study evaluated the efficacy and tolerability of the herbal medicine STW 5, which mainly contains a fresh plant extract of Iberis amara.

Results: A total of 315 patients were included in the safety population. Of these, 158 were treated with STW 5 and 157 with placebo. The intention-to-treat population comprised 308 patients. The number of dropouts was similar in both groups. Gastrointestinal symptoms improved during the treatment period. The STW 5 group improved by 6.9+/-4.8 points by day 56, compared with 5.9+/-4.3 in the placebo group (P<0.05). H. pylori did not affect the results. Drug tolerability and safety were similar in both groups. This placebo-controlled study, with an 8-week treatment period, documents the efficacy of STW 5 in FD.

The review indicated that a candytuft-containing product is used for functional dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome.

Aim of the study: Iberogast is a complex herbal preparation. As a fixed drug combination (9 constituents), it is composed of a fresh plant extract of Iberis amara and extracts of 8 other dried herbal drugs (Chelidonii herba, Cardui mariae fructus, Melissae folium, Carvi fructus, Liquiritiae radix, Angelicae radix, Matricariae flos, Menthae piperitae folium).

Results: Two trials comparing Iberogast with the prokinetic drugs metoclopramide and cisapride found that the herbal preparation and the prokinetic drugs had comparable effectiveness in treating dyspepsia. Adverse events were rare and, in frequency and type, were in some cases the same as those seen with placebo. Another advantage of Iberogast is that it acts only on the gastrointestinal tract and the enteric nervous system, not the central nervous system. Because of its distinctive dual action, clinically proven effectiveness, and good tolerability, Iberogast may be a first-choice medicine for functional gastrointestinal disorders and their related symptoms.

A laboratory study suggests that candytuft may support the action of a preparation that relieves spasms and regulates intestinal muscle tone.

Aim of the study: STW 5 (Iberogast) is a fixed combination of nine medicinal plant extracts that is effective in treating functional dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome.

Results: This was also true when STW 5 was used. An antispasmodic effect of STW 5 was also observed in the duodenum, jejunum, and colon. These data are the first to show not only the antispasmodic effects of STW 5 and its component extracts on intestinal muscle, but also the tonic effects of STW 5, through its Iberis amara extract, on relaxed intestinal muscle. Thus, pharmacological evidence suggests a dual-action principle and may partly explain the clinically observed therapeutic efficacy of STW 5 (Iberogast) for both low-tone and spasmodic motility symptoms of functional dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome.
