Red clover isoflavones have a structure similar to estrogen and can bind to estrogen receptors.

„Red clover isoflavones have a structure similar to estrogen, which allows them to bind to estrogen receptors (ER). Red clover’s estrogenic (estrogen-like) properties are used in medicine in cases of a deficiency of endogenous estrogen, including during menopause.”Izoflawony koniczyny mają podobną strukturę do estrogenów, dzięki czemu mogą przyłączać się do receptorów estrogenowych ER. Właściwości estrogenne (estrogenopodobne) koniczyny są wykorzystywane w medycynie w przypadkach niedoboru estrogenów endogennych, w tym również w okresie przekwitania.

Red clover extracts are recommended when estrogen levels fall and menopausal symptoms occur.

„Preparations containing red clover extract are recommended during menopause, when estrogen production falls and related unpleasant symptoms occur. Red clover may reduce hair loss associated with excess androgens. In such cases, oral preparations and alcohol extracts (made with 40–60% alcohol) rubbed into the hair after washing can be helpful.”Preparaty zawierające wyciąg z koniczyny zalecane są w okresie przekwitania, kiedy to spada produkcja estrogenów i występują przykre objawy z tym związane. Koniczyna może zmniejszać łysienie związane z nadmiarem androgenów. Pomocne są wówczas preparaty doustne i wyciągi alkoholowe (na alkoholu 40-60%) wcierane we włosy po umyciu.

Red clover contains isoflavones, which are believed to have estrogenic properties.

„It was not until the 20th century that attention turned to the isoflavones in red clover and related species, and to their estrogenic properties. Red clover is a typical herb for women. It treats androgenic acne in women, relieves premenstrual symptoms, and regulates menstruation.”Dopiero w XX wieku zwrócono uwagę na izoflawony zawarte w koniczynie i gatunkach pokrewnych oraz ich właściwości estrogenne. Koniczyna to typowe zioło dla kobiet. Leczy trądzik androgenny u kobiet, znosi objawy napięcia przedmiesiączkowego, reguluje menstruacje.

Doses are given for powdered red clover herb, an infusion, and dry extract.

„Powdered red clover herb with flowers – Pulvis Trifolii: 1–1.5 g 2–3 times a day. Red clover herb infusion – Infusum Trifolii: Pour 1 tablespoon of chopped dried herb with flowers over 1 cup of boiling water; leave for 30–40 minutes, then strain. Drink 1 cup twice a day. Dry extract – Extractum siccum Trifolii: 500 mg twice a day.”Sproszkowane ziele wraz z kwiatami koniczyny – Pulvis Trifolii: 1-1,5 g 2-3 razy dziennie. Napar z ziela koniczyny – Infusum Trifolii: 1 łyżke rozdrobnionego suchego ziela wraz z kwiatami zalać 1 szklanką wrzącej wody; odstawić na 30-40 minut, przecedzić. Pić 2 razy dziennie po 1 szklance. Ekstrakt suchy – Extractum siccum Trifolii: 500 mg 2 razy dziennie.

Soy was identified as the best source of plant isoflavones and an ingredient worth looking for in menopause supplements.

„Soy is their best source and, at the same time, a friend to women during menopause. That is why it is worth looking for soy in the ingredients of dietary supplements that may help with menopause. Herbs and plant extracts can also work wonders for many women. They have been known and used for centuries as remedies for women’s menopausal complaints.”Najlepszym ich źródłem, a jednocześnie przyjacielem kobiety w okresie menopauzalnym jest soja. Dlatego to jej należy szukać w składzie suplementów diety pomocnych w menopauzie. Na większość pań cudownie zadziałają także zioła i ekstrakty roślinne. Są od wieków znane i stosowane jako antidotum na kobiece dolegliwości wieku przekwitania.

A meta-analysis found that phytoestrogens reduced the frequency of hot flashes, although they did not significantly improve the overall menopause symptom score.

Aim of the study: To perform a meta-analysis examining the efficacy of phytoestrogens for the relief of menopausal symptoms.

Results: Of 543 potentially relevant studies identified, 15 RCTs meeting the inclusion criteria were included. The mean age of the subjects ranged from 49 to 58.3 and 48 to 60.1 years, respectively, in the placebo and phytoestrogen groups. The number of participants ranged from 30 to 252, and the intervention periods ranged from 3 to 12 months. Meta-analysis of the seven studies that reported KI data indicated no significant treatment effect of phytoestrogen as compared to placebo (pooled mean difference = 6.44, p = 0.110). Meta-analysis of the ten studies that reported hot flush data indicated that phytoestrogens result in a significantly greater reduction in hot flush frequency compared to placebo (pooled mean difference = 0.89, p < 0.005). Meta-analysis of the five studies that reported side-effect data showed no significant difference between the two groups (p = 0.175). Phytoestrogens appear to reduce the frequency of hot flushes in menopausal women, without serious side-effects.

A review suggests that isoflavones found in red clover, among other sources, may moderately relieve hot flashes and night sweats.

Aim of the study: Menopause is characterized by a decline in estrogen levels, leading to symptoms such as vasomotor instability, osteoporosis, and increased cardiovascular and cognitive risk. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) remains the gold standard for managing menopausal symptoms; however, concerns regarding its long-term safety, including elevated risks of cancer and cardiovascular events, have prompted interest in alternative therapies.

Results: At dietary levels, these compounds are generally safe, although high-dose supplementation is discouraged in individuals with hormone-sensitive cancers. Emerging evidence suggests lifelong consumption of soy-based foods may reduce cancer risk. In conclusion, daidzein and genistein represent promising, well-tolerated natural alternatives to conventional HRT, offering symptom relief and additional health benefits. Further research is warranted to optimize dosing, improve clinical outcomes, and clarify long-term safety in diverse populations, particularly with genetic variations in isoflavone metabolism.

A review of red clover trials found conflicting results, but said they encourage further research into its use during menopause.

Aim of the study: Menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes and night sweats can be very disrupting. While hormone replacement therapy is an effective therapy, concerns about side effects and breast cancer risk have stimulated interest into alternative therapies such as phytoestrogens.

Results: These are oestrogen-like compounds made by plants. Two major sources of phytoestrogens are soy and red clover. Data on randomised controlled trials of red clover for the control of menopausal symptoms are presented. The conflicting data are encouraging and suggest that phytoestrogens are a treatment modality that needs pursuing.

In rats, red clover supplementation improved changes associated with estrogen deficiency and chronic stress.

Aim of the study: Estrogen deficiency after menopause contributes to various neurological disorders, including stress, anxiety, depression, and memory impairment. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is commonly used to mitigate menopausal symptoms, but its use is associated with significant adverse effects.

Results: Significant changes in physiological, neurobehavioral, biochemical, molecular, and histopathological alterations in the brain hippocampal region were observed in OVX, CUMS, and OVX + CUMS group rats, indicating enhanced neuronal deficits compared with control group rats. Treatment with RC supplementation, 17-β estradiol (E2), and fluoxetine (Flx) significantly restored the pathological alterations caused by both CUMS and estrogen deficiency toward normal. E2 and Flx were included in the study to serve as established treatments for postmenopausal symptoms and stress-related disorders, providing a basis for comparison with RC. In conclusion, our study demonstrated the immense potential of RC in alleviating neurological disorders associated with estrogen deficiency and chronic stress.
