Dr. Ewa Dąbrowska writes that skin lesions often recede after one fasting cycle, even after many years of illness.
- For atopic dermatitis, fasting eases itching, redness, and skin cracking, and often leads to the lesions clearing up and the skin’s condition improving.
- After fasting, it is important to follow a diet based on unprocessed plant foods and to identify and eliminate foods that are not tolerated.

„Skin lesions often recede after just one fasting cycle, even after many years of illness. Continuing with a diet based on unprocessed plant foods and eliminating foods that are not tolerated are key.
Atopic dermatitis
Post łagodzi świąd, zaczerwienienie i pękanie skóry.

Fasting supports the immune system. At first, during fasting, leukocytosis decreases and dysfunctional cells are destroyed. In later stages, however, the number of stem cells increases, helping rebuild a new, functioning immune system.”Atopowe zapalenie skóry
Post łagodzi świąd, zaczerwienienie i pękanie skóry. Często prowadzi do ustąpienia zmian i poprawy kondycji skóry.

The review describes possible skin benefits of calorie restriction, but notes that the effects of fasting and nutrient-restricted diets have not been assessed in the context of skin aging.
Aim of the study: During the aging process of an organism, the skin gradually loses its structural and functional characteristics. The skin becomes more fragile and vulnerable to damage, which may contribute to age-related diseases and even death.
Results: The anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, stem cell maintenance, and metabolic activities of CR contribute to its beneficial effects on the skin. To the best of the author's knowledge, the effects of fasting or a specific nutrient-restricted diet on skin aging have not been evaluated; these strategies offer benefits in wound healing and inflammatory skin diseases. In addition, well-known CR mimetics, including resveratrol, metformin, rapamycin, and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor agonists, show CR-like prevention against skin aging. An overview of the role of CR in skin biology will provide valuable insights that would eventually lead to improvements in skin health.

After successful weight loss following bariatric surgery, some skin changes were less common, although hair loss was observed more often.
Aim of the study: Skin signs observed in morbid obesity may change as the weight reduces, especially post-bariatric surgery (BaS). Data concerning the skin findings exclusively in post-BaS patients remain limited.
Results: Forty-six patients with successful weight loss demonstrated a significantly lower prevalence of acanthosis nigricans on the neck, axillae and inguinal areas, keratosis pilaris (KP) and pebble fingers. However, a higher prevalence of alopecia was observed. After adjustment with patients' factors, KP (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 0.21, 95%CI 0.06-0.74, p = 0.02) and pebble fingers (aOR = 0.09, 95%CI 0.01-0.89, p = 0.04) remained significantly less likely in patients with successful weight loss. Laboratory results comparing pre- and post-surgery values revealed significant decreases in fasting plasma glucose, hemoglobin A1c, and triglyceride and an increase of high-density lipoproteins in both groups. However, significant decreases of liver aminotransferases (AST and ALT) were observed only in the successful group (p = 0.04, 0.003). Nonetheless, a decrease in vitamin B12 (p = 0.01) was observed in the successful group. Weight loss after BaS provided an improvement for metabolic profiles.

„It has been suggested that intermittent fasting could reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by improving weight control, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and diabetes (Dong 2020). However, further research is needed to fully understand the potential benefits of intermittent fasting for cardiovascular health (Hamer 2023). Intermittent fasting for metabolic diseases Intermittent fasting has been shown to have a range of potential benefits for metabolic health. It can improve metabolic and inflammatory parameters, particularly when combined with regular physical exercise (Zhang 2023).”It has been suggested that intermittent fasting could reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by improving weight control, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and diabetes (Dong 2020). „Numerous studies have demonstrated the potential benefits of intermittent fasting for cardiovascular health, weight loss, metabolic health, brain function, longevity, and even autoimmune diseases and cancer (Sun 2024, Cheng 2024). These studies emphasize the positive impact of intermittent fasting on various aspects of health and well-being. From an evolutionary perspective, human ancestors were routinely on intermittent fasting which seems to bestow survival benefits.”Numerous studies have demonstrated the potential benefits of intermittent fasting for cardiovascular health, weight loss, metabolic health, brain function, longevity, and even autoimmune diseases and cancer (Sun 2024, Cheng 2024). „Correlation with Health Outcomes: The positive effects of fasting on vitamin D levels are particularly relevant in the context of metabolic health. Improved vitamin D status is associated with better outcomes in conditions like type 2 diabetes, where fasting may also enhance insulin sensitivity and reduce inflammation (109). Implications for Vitamin D Resistance: The findings suggest that fasting could be a potential therapeutic approach to address vitamin D resistance, which is often linked to obesity and metabolic disorders.”Correlation with Health Outcomes: The positive effects of fasting on vitamin D levels are particularly relevant in the context of metabolic health.
