What the authors write
B vitamins support energy metabolism in the nervous system as well as physical and mental performance.
Vitamin B12 plays a part in the functioning of the immune system, energy metabolism, and the proper functioning of the nervous system.
Andrzej Frydrychowski describes the B vitamin complex as very important for the body.
The body does not store B vitamins, which Andrzej Frydrychowski calls crucial for health.
Deficiencies of vitamins B2, B3, B6, and B12 have been linked to gingivitis and periodontitis, and a B12 deficiency may lead to acute gingivitis.
Folic acid deficiency can slow cell turnover and reduce resistance to infections.
Andrzej Frydrychowski claims that simply eating foods containing B vitamins is not enough and that supplementation is needed.
Vitamin B2 is presented as one of the substances the body needs to function properly.

B vitamins are essential for many basic processes in the body, and must come from the diet or gut microbiota.
Aim of the study: B group vitamins represent essential micronutrients for myriad metabolic and regulatory processes required for human health, serving as cofactors used by hundreds of enzymes that carry out essential functions such as energy metabolism, DNA and protein synthesis and other critical functions. B vitamins and their corresponding vitamers are universally essential for all cellular life forms, from bacteria to humans.
Results: More recently, another source of B vitamins has been identified: some of the 1013 bacterial cells living in the gastrointestinal tract. Here we review the growing body of research examining the relationship between B vitamins, the immune system, and various cancers. Evidence of the role of B vitamins in regulating immune cells has accumulated in recent years and may help explain the conflicting findings of numerous studies seeking to link B vitamins to cancer development. Much work remains to fully clarify these relationships, as the complexity of the essential functions of B vitamins makes it difficult to determine unequivocally whether their effects in inflammation and cancer are beneficial or harmful.

The review indicates that B vitamins support important bodily functions, including energy metabolism, DNA maintenance, and immunity.
Aim of the study: B vitamin complex consist of vitamins B1, B2, B5, B6, B9, B12 and is pivotal for overall health, influencing vital functions such as, energy metabolism, DNA maintenance, and healthy immune system. Inadequate B vitamin levels are associated with various health issues, including neurocognitive problems, immune imbalances, and inflammation.
Results: In ageing individuals, deficiencies in B vitamins increase the risk of cardiovascular ailments, stroke, cognitive disorders, neurodegeneration, mental health issues, and methylation-related disorders. These result primarily due to changes in glycation, mitochondria, and oxidative stress. Thus, ensuring optimal vitamin B levels in the ageing population may be beneficial in preventing such age-related diseases. In this chapter we discuss the extensive role of B vitamins in the ageing process.

The review indicates that lower vitamin B12 levels may be associated with greater oxidative stress, but evidence in humans is limited.
Aim of the study: The triage theory posits that modest micronutrient deficiencies may induce reallocation of nutrients to processes necessary for immediate survival at the expense of long-term health. Neglected processes could in time contribute to the onset of age-related diseases, in which oxidative stress is believed to be a major factor.
Results: The potential antioxidant properties of B12 include: (1) direct scavenging of reactive oxygen species (ROS), particularly superoxide; (2) indirect stimulation of ROS scavenging by preservation of glutathione; (3) modulation of cytokine and growth factor production to offer protection from immune response-induced oxidative stress; (4) reduction of homocysteine-induced oxidative stress; and (5) reduction of oxidative stress caused by advanced glycation end products. Some evidence appears to suggest that lower B12 status is related to increased pro-oxidant and decreased antioxidant status, both overall and for subclinically deficient individuals compared to those with normal B12 status. However, there is a lack of randomised controlled trials and prospective studies focusing specifically on the relation between B12 and oxidative stress in humans, resulting in a low strength of evidence. Further work is warranted.

In mice, prebiotic supplementation alleviated some stress-induced inflammatory changes, and levels of several B vitamins were associated with lower IL-6.
Aim of the study: Background: Exposure to stressful stimuli dysregulates inflammatory processes and alters the gut microbiota. Prebiotics, including long-chain fermentable fibers and milk oligosaccharides, have the potential to limit inflammation through modulation of the gut microbiota.
Results: Metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) from mice fed the GOS+PDX+SL diet unveiled genes in a Bifidobacterium MAG for de novo B vitamin synthesis. B vitamers directly attenuated the stressor-induced exacerbation of cytokine production in LPS-stimulated splenocytes. Conclusions: Overall, these data indicate that colonic metabolites, including B vitamins, are responsive to psychosocial stress. Dietary prebiotics reestablish colonic B vitamins and limit stress-induced inflammation.

The description indicates that vitamin B1 has anti-inflammatory properties and that its deficiency may impair the functioning of the immune system.
Aim of the study: Vitamin B1 (thiamin) is considered to be the oldest vitamin and in 1936 R.R. Williams and colleagues determined its chemical structure and were able to synthesize this vitamin.
Results: Williams and colleagues determined its chemical structure and were able to synthesize this vitamin. Vitamin B1 influences pro-apoptotic proteins, mitochondrial membrane potential, cytochrome C release, protein kinases, p38-MAPK, suppresses oxidative stress-induced NF-kappaB and has anti-inflammatory properties. Deficiency of vitamin B1 may cause beriberi, dysfunction of the nervous system, neuroinflammation, T cell infiltration, chemokine CCL2 activation, over expression of proinflammatory cytokines, such as IL-1, TNF, IL-6, and arachidonic acid products, and induces expression of CD40 by the microglia and CD40L by astrocytes which provoke the death of neurons. Here we report the relationship between vitamin B complex and immunity.
