Bladderwrack — a seaweed for the thyroid, or a risk of too much iodine?

Sources: 3 · Article: 4 734 characters

Henryk Różański reports that bladderwrack contains 0.04 to 3.5% iodine compounds, depending on the origin of the raw material.

  • He describes bladderwrack as a raw material that stimulates thyroid function and lists iodine-deficiency goiter as an indication for its use.
  • He also recommends bladderwrack wine for, among other things, hypothyroidism.

Henryk Różański

The iodine compound content of bladderwrack is 0.04–3.5% and depends on the origin of the raw material.

„The active constituents of bladderwrack include: iodine compounds, 0.04–3.5%, depending on origin (the highest iodine content is found in raw material from the Atlantic); alginic acid — up to 19%; fucoidan — up to 7%; laminarin — about 2%; mannitol — up to 10%. Bladderwrack also contains bromine and arsenic, and a substantial amount of calcium.”Do składników czynnych morszczynu zaliczamy: związki jodu 0,04-3,5%, zależnie od pochodzenia (najwyższa zawartość jodu w surowcu z Atlantyku), kwas alginowy – do 19%, fukoidyna – do 7%, laminaryna ok. 2%, mannitol – do 10%. Morszczyn zawiera także brom i arsen, sporo wapnia.

Bladderwrack stimulates thyroid function, and iodine-deficiency goiter is listed as an indication for its use.

„Bladderwrack and kombu stimulate thyroid function, speed up metabolism, dilate blood vessels, lower blood pressure, regulate bowel movements, and have antiseptic, diuretic, and bile-stimulating effects; they are said to have restorative, strengthening, and anti-atherosclerotic effects. Indications: endemic goiter (iodine deficiency), obesity, edema, hypertension, constipation, atherosclerosis, low urine output, hair loss, peptic ulcers, inflammatory conditions of the respiratory tract, and restorative and strengthening courses.”Morszczyn i listownica pobudzają czynności tarczycy, przyśpieszają przemianę materii, rozszerzają naczynia krwionośne, obniżają ciśnienie krwi, regulują wypróżnienia, działają antyseptycznie, moczopędnie, żółciopędnie; wykazują wpływ regenerujący, wzmacniający i przeciwmiażdżycowy. Wskazania: wole endemiczne (niedobór jodu), otyłość, obrzęki, nadciśnienie, zaparcia, miażdżyca, skąpomocz, wypadanie włosów, choroba wrzodowa, stany zapalne układu oddechowego, kuracje wzmacniające i odnawiające.

Bladderwrack is classified as an iodine-containing medicinal raw material that is said to affect metabolism through the hormonal system.

„As their name suggests, iodine-containing medicinal raw materials contain significant amounts of iodine compounds, which can affect metabolism through the hormonal system and influence the function of the respiratory system. Iodine-containing materials, such as the bladderwrack discussed here, can lower cholesterol levels, which is why they were believed to have anti-atherosclerotic properties.”Surowce jodowe, jak sama nazwa wskazuje zawierają w składzie znaczne ilości związków jodu, mających zdolność oddziaływania na przemianę materii poprzez układ hormonalny oraz na czynności układu oddechowego. Surowce jodowe, np. omawiany morszczyn, mają zdolność obniżania poziomu cholesterolu, przez co przypisywano im właściwości przeciwmiażdżycowe.

Henryk Różański recommends bladderwrack wine for, among other things, hypothyroidism.

„As for the tincture, given the solubility of the active compounds, fresh or dried, chopped bladderwrack thallus should be covered with low-proof alcohol, preferably warm 15-20-30%, or with wine. After 14 days, strain it and take it 1–2 times a day: 25–30 ml of wine or 10–15 ml of tincture. Use 400–500 g of alcohol for every 100 g of thallus. I especially recommend bladderwrack wine — Vinum Fuci — for atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, obesity, a tendency to develop blood clots, hypothyroidism, neuroses, and stress.”Jeżeli chodzi o nalewkę, biorąc pod uwagę rozpuszczalność związków czynnych, należy świeżą lub suchą i rozdrobnioną plechę morszczynu zalewać alkoholem niskoprocentowym, najlepiej ciepłym 15-20-30% lub winem, po 14 dniach przefiltrować, zażywać 1-2 razy dziennie: wino po 25-30 ml, nalewkę po 10-15 ml. Na 100 g plechy należy przeznaczyć 400-500 g alkoholu. Wino morszczynowe – Vinum Fuci szczególnie polecam przy miażdżycy, choroby wieńcowej, otyłości, tendencji do zakrzepów, niedoczynności tarczycy oraz nerwicach i stresie.

Bladderwrack contains iodine compounds, but the stated amount varies greatly depending on its origin.

„Valuable constituents of algae include iodine compounds, 0.04–3.5%, depending on origin; proteins, 8–9%; alginic acid — up to 19%; fucoidan — up to 7%; laminarin — about 2%; mannitol — up to 10%. Mineral salts may make up 15–18% of the raw material by weight. Algae are a source of easily absorbed sugars (mannose, fucose), pectins, and mucilage.”Wartościowymi składnikami glonów są związki jodu 0,04-3,5%, zależnie od pochodzenia; białka 8-9%; kwas alginowy – do 19%, fukoidyna – do 7%, laminaryna ok. 2%, mannitol – do 10%. Sole mineralne mogą stanowić 15-18% masy surowca. Glony są źródłem łatwo przyswajalnych cukrów (mannozy, fukozy), pektyn i śluzów.

The study indicates that regularly eating algae can provide enough iodine to cause thyroid problems, although the particular risk was associated with seaweeds of the genus Laminaria.

Aim of the study: The goal of the study was to assess the contamination of marine algae (seaweeds) growing in the St. Lawrence River estuary and Gulf of St.

Results: palmata, in order to prevent potential problems. Furthermore, it would also be important to assess whether preparation for consumption or cooking affects the iodine content of algae. Algae consumption may also have beneficial health effects. Scientific literature has shown that it is a good source of fiber and vitamins, especially vitamin B12.
