A preparation containing figwort, used together with moisturizing eye drops, improved symptoms of dry eye in postmenopausal women, but the study does not allow the effect to be attributed to figwort alone.

Aim of the study: To objectively evaluate the therapeutic effect and safety of Runmushu Oral Liquid (RMS) for the treatment of xerophthalmia in postmenopausal women.

Results: After 1 month of treatment, the total effective rate was 86.1% (62/72) in the treated group and 66.7% (48/72) in the control group, showing a significant difference between them (P < 0.01). Significant differences between groups were also found in improvements in total scores for subjective symptoms (P < 0.01) and in tear film break-up time (BUT) and Schirmer I test scores; these measures were better in the treated group (P < 0.01). However, the improvement in corneal fluorescein staining scores did not differ significantly between groups (P > 0.05). RMS with artificial tears can ease eye symptoms, prolong BUT, and promote tear secretion in the treatment of postmenopausal women with xerophthalmia. It showed a better therapeutic effect than artificial tears alone.
