Ginger — a natural remedy for nausea and the common cold?

Sources: 3 · Article: 6 122 characters

Henryk Różański describes ginger as an antiemetic and mentions its use for the common cold.

  • Henryk Różański states that extracts from ginger rhizomes have antiviral effects and that the phytoncides they contain inhibit the growth of rhinoviruses.
  • However, he does not describe ginger as a sure way to cure the common cold.

Gingerols and shogaols have antiemetic effects.

„Shogaols and gingerols have antiemetic effects, which have been put to use in medicine. They also inhibit the synthesis of leukotrienes and cyclooxygenase I and II (COX-I, COX-II) more strongly than indomethacin. They are also inhibitors of lipoxygenase (5-LO).”Szogaole i gingerole wywierają działanie przeciwwymiotne, co zostało wykorzystane w lecznictwie. Ponadto hamują one syntezę leukotrienów, cyklooksygenazę I i II (COX-I, COX-II) silniej niż indometacyna. Należą również do inhibitorów lipooksygenazy (5-LO).

Ginger extracts reduce digestive complaints, including nausea.

„They also reduce digestive complaints such as bloating, indigestion, constipation, and nausea. They increase joint mobility and improve well-being. They stimulate blood circulation and ease allergic symptoms. The antibacterial, antiparasitic, and antiviral properties of aqueous and hydroalcoholic extracts from ginger rhizomes have also been known for a long time.”Zmniejszają także dolegliwości ze strony układu pokarmowego typu wzdęcia, zaburzenia trawienne, zaparcia, nudności.

Dry ginger extract was listed as an antiemetic at a dose of 250–300 mg every 3–4 hours.

Ginger phytoncides inhibit the growth of rhinoviruses, Escherichia coli, Proteus vulgaris, Vibrio cholerae, Salmonella typhimurium, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus viridans, and many protozoa and parasitic invertebrates (flagellates, amoebae, flatworms, and roundworms).”Od dawna znane są również właściwości przeciwbakteryjne, przeciwpasożytnicze i przeciwwirusowe wodnych i wodno-alkoholowych wyciągów z kłączy imbiru. The review points to preliminary or satisfactory evidence that ginger may ease nausea during pregnancy, although it does not support a definite conclusion about its effectiveness.

Aim of the study: Systematic reviews and meta-analyses represent the uppermost ladders in the hierarchy of evidence.

Results: A critical evaluation of the clinical data regarding the adverse effects has shown that herbal remedies are generally better tolerated than synthetic medications. Nevertheless, potentially serious adverse events, including herb-drug interactions, have been described. This suggests the need to be vigilant when using herbal remedies, particularly in specific conditions, such as during pregnancy and in the paediatric population. The review reports that ginger and other traditional Chinese medicine methods may help ease nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy.

Aim of the study: Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) is among the most prevalent adverse reactions in cancer treatment. It significantly diminishes the quality of life of patients and their treatment compliance.

Results: "Hewei Jiangni" formulas (harmonizing the stomach and directing rebellious Qi downward), including Xiao-Ban-Xia-Tang, ginger, and external therapies (e.g., acupuncture, moxibustion, acupoint application) directly alleviate nausea and vomiting by regulating gastrointestinal motility, antagonizing emesis-related receptors, and inhibiting inflammatory pathways. Clinical research shows that combining TCM with conventional antiemetic regimens improves the control of delayed CINV and enhances patients' quality of life, while maintaining a favorable safety profile. However, current evidence remains limited by small sample sizes, insufficient mechanistic investigations, and lack of standardized treatment plans. Future research should prioritize high-quality and large-sample clinical trials and clarify its mechanism of action using modern scientific approaches, so as to promote the standardized and efficient application of TCM for the prevention and treatment of CINV.
