Magnesium chloride—a cheap way to address magnesium deficiency?

Sources: 8 · Article: 9 273 characters

Henryk Różański describes magnesium chloride as a well-absorbed, inexpensive source of magnesium.

  • It can therefore be used to supplement magnesium, but taking supplements alone does not guarantee an adequate intake.
  • Absorption depends on the form of magnesium, and several medicines and products can reduce it.
  • Jan Jaśkowski recommends magnesium glycinate because it is well absorbed.
  • A 3 g dose of magnesium chloride has a strong laxative effect.

What the authors write

Henryk Różański

Magnesium chloride is described as an absorbable, inexpensive source of magnesium for people and animals.

„Anhydrous magnesium chloride MgCl2, molar mass: 95.2104 [g/mol] Crystalline magnesium chloride hexahydrate MgCl2+6H2O, molar mass: 203.3021 [g/mol] Magnesium chloride is bioavailable (absorbable), and is therefore a good, inexpensive source of magnesium for the human and animal body.”Chlorek magnezu bezwodny MgCl2 masa molowa: 95.2104 [g/mol] Chlorek magnezu krystaliczny sześciowodny MgCl2+6H2O masa molowa: 203.3021 [g/mol] Chlorek magnezu jest biodostępny (przyswajalny), zatem stanowi dobre i tanie źródło magnezu dla organizmu człowieka i zwierząt.

Magnesium chloride is approved for use in supplements as a source of magnesium, and the recommended daily intake of magnesium is 375 mg.

„Under the Regulation of the Minister of Health of 18 May 2010, magnesium chloride was approved for use in supplements as a source of magnesium (Appendices to the Regulation of the Minister of Health of 18 May 2010 (item 596)). The recommended daily intake of magnesium is 375 mg.”Zgodnie z Rozporządzeniem Ministra Zdrowia z 18 maja 2010 r. chlorek magnezu został dopuszczony do suplementów jako źródło magnezu (Załączniki do rozporządzenia Ministra Zdrowia z dnia 18 maja 2010 r. (poz. 596)). Zalecane dzienne spożycie magnezu wynosi 375 mg.

Magnesium chloride can be taken in capsules or as a powder dissolved in water.

„Magnesium chloride can be given in capsules or as a powder to be dissolved in water. It is suitable for making syrup-like solutions to be taken by the spoonful, including by children and older people. In the case of constipation, it can be mixed with a solution of mannitol, xylitol, xylose, or sorbitol, or with fruit juices, for example.”Chlorek magnezu można podawać w kapsułkach oraz w proszkach do rozpuszczania w wodzie. W przypadku zaparcia można go mieszać z roztworem mannitolu, ksylitolu, ksylozy, sorbitolu, z sokami owocowymi, np.

A 3 g oral dose has a strong bile-stimulating and laxative effect.

„At an oral dose of 3 g, it has a strong bile-stimulating and laxative effect through osmosis. At lower doses (700–1000 mg), it increases bile secretion, stimulates intestinal movement, and regulates bowel movements without causing a laxative effect, as some substances do, for example.”W dawce 3 g doustnie działa silnie żółciopędnie i rozwalniająco na zasadzie osmotycznej. W mniejszych dawkach (700-1000 mg) wzmaga wydzielanie żółci, pobudza perystaltykę jelit i reguluje wypróżnienia, nie dając jednocześnie efektu przeczyszczenia, jak czyni, np.

Taking magnesium supplements does not guarantee an adequate intake, and a supplement’s value depends on the chemical form used.

„Taking magnesium as a supplement does not guarantee an adequate magnesium intake. A supplement’s value depends on the chemical form of magnesium it contains. Not all magnesium compounds can be absorbed by our bodies. Magnesium oxides, carbonate, and phosphate are questionable sources of absorbable magnesium (unless they are taken at the same time as acids or the person has excess stomach acid).”Zażywanie magnezu w postaci suplementów nie gwarantuje dostatecznej podaży magnezu.

Some medicines and products can reduce magnesium absorption.

„Do not take magnesium at the same time as antibiotics (e.g. tetracycline). If you are also taking calcium supplements, take magnesium at a different time of day. Antacids, cellulose products, fiber, medicinal charcoal, and strong alcoholic drinks (e.g. vodka, cognac) impair magnesium absorption.”Magnezu nie przyjmować jednocześnie z antybiotykami (np. tetracykliną). Jeżeli równocześnie zażywamy preparaty wapnia – spożyć magnez w innym czasie dnia. Środki zobojętniające sok żołądkowy, preparaty celulozy, błonnika, węgiel leczniczy, alkohole mocne (np. wódki, koniak) – upośledzają przyswajanie magnezu.

Magnesium deficiency can result, among other things, from an improper diet, absorption problems, or excessive magnesium loss.

„Causes of magnesium deficiency with hypomagnesemia include: – an improper diet, – fasting, – inadequate magnesium absorption from the gastrointestinal tract due to intestinal inflammation, chronic intestinal catarrh, or magnesium loss in bile or intestinal fluid, – excessive magnesium loss in urine—magnesuria (e.g.”Powodami niedoboru magnezu z hipomagnezemią są: – niewłaściwa dieta, – głodowanie, – niedostateczne wchłanianie magnezu z przewodu pokarmowego na tle stanu zapalnego jelit, przewlekłego nieżytu jelit, utraty magnezu z żółcią lub z sokiem jelitowym, – nadmierna utrata magnezu z moczem – magnezuria (np.

Excessive use of magnesium preparations can raise the level of magnesium in the blood, and muscle paralysis can be one symptom.

„Hypermagnesemia is an increase in the concentration of magnesium in blood serum above 1.5 mmol/l. It is most often caused by: – excessive doses of magnesium preparations, particularly when administered parenterally, – excessive stomach acidity combined with prolonged and excessive use of magnesium preparations, – inadequate excretion of magnesium in urine (kidney failure, underactive thyroid or adrenal glands), – use of magnesium compounds that neutralize stomach acid (magnesium carbonate, bicarbonate, or oxide) in cases of excessive stomach acidity, together with kidney failure or the inadvertent use of acidifiers.”Hipermagnezemia to wzrost stężenia magnezu w surowicy krwi ponad 1,5 mmol/l.

Jan Jaśkowski recommends magnesium glycinate, which he describes as well absorbed and calming.

„Fruit, root vegetables, dairy products, and chocolate are rich sources of magnesium. Vitamin K2 is found in dairy products, liver, and eggs. As a supplement, I recommend magnesium glycinate, which is well absorbed and has a calming effect.”Bogatym źródłem magnezu są owoce, warzywa korzeniowe, nabiał i czekolada. Witamina K2 występuje w nabiale, wątróbce i jajkach.

Jan Jaśkowski also identifies magnesium bisglycinate or taurate as forms of supplementation that support the treatment of several conditions.

„Scientific studies show that magnesium supplementation (in the form of magnesium bisglycinate or taurate) supports the treatment of high blood pressure, depression, and insomnia, and helps ensure proper bone structure. Magnesium is also essential for the production of ATP in cells—the carrier of energy.”Badania naukowe dowodzą, że suplementacja magnezem (w postaci bisglicynianu lub taurynianu magnezu) wspomaga leczenie nadciśnienia tętniczego, depresji i bezsenności oraz zapewnia prawidłową budowę kości.

In rats, magnesium chloride was absorbable, although organic salts had slightly greater bioavailability than inorganic salts.

Aim of the study: Literature data on the bioavailability of various Mg forms provide scarce information on the best Mg salt to be used in animal and human supplementation. This study aimed to investigate the bioavailability of different forms of Mg in rats using Mg stable isotopes.

Results: Mg gluconate exhibited the highest Mg bioavailability of the ten Mg salts studied. Urinary 26Mg excretion varied from 0.20 mg to 0.33 mg, and feeding with the organic pidolate, citrate, gluconate and aspartate salts resulted in higher urinary 26Mg excretion than with inorganic salts. Ultimately, 26Mg retention was higher in the rats receiving the organic salts such as gluconate, lactate and aspartate than in those receiving the inorganic salts. Taken together, these results indicate that 26Mg is sufficiently bioavailable from the ten different Mg salts studied in the present experiment, although Mg gluconate exhibited the highest bioavailability under these experimental conditions.

„Other useful, but more costly, oral forms of magnesium include magnesium glycinate, magnesium gluconate, magnesium taurate, magnesium malate, and magnesium chloride. Avoid magnesium oxide (it absorbs very poorly) and avoid both magnesium glutamate and magnesium aspartate (10). Magnesium sulfate is cheap and can be obtained transdermally by soaking in regular Epsom salt baths.”Other useful, but more costly, oral forms of magnesium include magnesium glycinate, magnesium gluconate, magnesium taurate, magnesium malate, and magnesium chloride. „Alternatively, DMSO can be readily combined with other anti-pathogen agents, such as sodium ascorbate (vitamin C) and magnesium chloride. Anecdotally, this DMSO-vitamin C-magnesium chloride combination has proven to be very effective in clearing biofilms and their underlying pathogen colonies. This can be done with 1 to 5 cc of 99.9% DMSO brought up to 10 to 12 cc with a combination solution of vitamin C and magnesium chloride.”Alternatively, DMSO can be readily combined with other anti-pathogen agents, such as sodium ascorbate (vitamin C) and magnesium chloride.
