The STOP NOP Association describes the sudden deaths of 19 infants that occurred within hours or days after combination vaccinations.
- According to the association, some deaths of children after several vaccine doses may have been wrongly attributed to shaking.
- The authors of the case report believed that the child died from possible post-vaccination encephalitis.
What the authors write
The sudden, unexpected deaths of 19 infants within hours or days after they received combination vaccines were described, but it was not directly shown that the vaccinations caused them.
It was reported that the children died within days or weeks after several vaccine doses, and that some of the deaths were allegedly wrongly attributed to shaken baby syndrome.
It was noted that there is no research clearly confirming that vaccinations cause the injuries associated with shaken baby syndrome.
The authors of the case report believed that the child's death had been wrongly attributed to shaken baby syndrome, and that its true cause may have been post-vaccination encephalitis.
Cases were described of severe brain damage or death in children whose symptoms appeared shortly after routine vaccinations.
Vaccinations were presented as a possible source of complications, such as encephalitis, which can lead to death.

The study did not find that DTCP vaccination increased the overall risk of SIDS, although a difference was noted in a small subgroup of infants under 3 months old.
Aim of the study: Because diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis and poliomyelitis vaccine is routinely given during the period of highest incidence of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), we carried out a retrospective case-control study to assess whether such vaccination increased the risk of SIDS.
Results: There was a statistical difference between vaccination status of SIDS cases and controls aged less than three months. Nine percent of SIDS cases under 3 months had been vaccinated whereas the matched controls had not. In our study DTCP vaccination was not a risk factor for SIDS; although more of the SIDS infants less than 3 months of age had been vaccinated. This result however, concerns only one subgroup of the population studied and needs to be confirmed with another study of only SIDS infants less than 3 months of age, because DTCP vaccination was not a risk factor for SIDS when considering the total sample of the study.

In some cases, death occurred shortly after vaccination, but the researchers did not establish a causal link.
Aim of the study: Sudden infant deaths might be attributable to adverse reaction to vaccination, but separating them from coincidental occurrences is difficult. This study retrospectively investigated vaccination-related details and postmortem findings for 57 cases of sudden death in children 2 years or younger.
Results: Histopathological examinations revealed pneumonia and upper respiratory infection as contributing to death in their cases. Moreover, all 3 cases showed hemophagocytosis in the spleen and lymph nodes, which are similar features to hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis. Judgment of the disorders as truly related to vaccination is difficult, but suspicious cases do exist. Forensic pathologists must devote more attention to vaccination in sudden infant death cases.

The study did not confirm a causal link, although the authors hypothesized that vaccine components may play a role in vulnerable infants.
Aim of the study: We examined a large number of sudden infant death syndrome victims in order to point out a possible causal relationship between a previous hexavalent vaccination and the sudden infant death. We selected 110 cases submitted to in-depth histological examination of the autonomic nervous system and provided with detailed clinical and environmental information.
Results: In one case in particular an acquired hyperacute encephalitis of the tractus solitarii nucleus was diagnosed in the brainstem. This study does not prove a causal relationship between the hexavalent vaccination and SIDS. However, we hypothesize that vaccine components could have a direct role in sparking off a lethal outcome in vulnerable babies. In conclusion, we sustain the need that deaths occurring in a short space of time after hexavalent vaccination are appropriately investigated and submitted to a post-mortem examination particularly of the autonomic nervous system by an expert pathologist to objectively evaluate the possible causative role of the vaccine in SIDS.

The review discusses the hypothesis that an inflammatory response similar to one following vaccination could, under certain circumstances, make an infant more susceptible to severe infection.
Aim of the study: Within sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) reside several primary phenomena. These include a state of immune immaturity, susceptibility to infection, and an inflammatory state.
Results: The pattern of inflammation is very similar to that observed following vaccination. The complex relationship between reactogenicity and immunogenicity is examined. Under certain circumstances, reactogenicity can cause immune paralysis and may leave a vulnerable infant open to infection and systemic inflammatory response syndrome, leading to shock. This mechanism is explored in this rapid review in the context of the aetiopathogenesis of SIDS.

Among infants of mothers vaccinated against COVID-19, the rate of death did not exceed pre-pandemic levels.
Aim of the study: The COVID-19 Vaccine Pregnancy Registry (C19VPR) monitored pregnant women vaccinated for COVID-19 during December 2020 to June 2021. We report incidence of health outcomes among infants of C19VPR participants.
Results: Of 19,852 infants with 3-month follow-up data, 125 (0.6%) had at least one prespecified condition. Estimated C19VPR incidences for these conditions, LBW, SGA, and death, were within or below ranges reported in prepandemic studies. The incidence of LBW, SGA, death, or each of 10 prespecified infant conditions in C19VPR did not exceed prepandemic estimates.

The meningococcal vaccine studied, given together with routine vaccines, was generally well tolerated, and its safety profile was comparable to that of another meningococcal vaccine.
Aim of the study: MenACYW-TT, a quadrivalent meningococcal tetanus toxoid-conjugate vaccine, is approved for prevention of invasive meningococcal disease in infants ≥ 6 weeks of age in the USA.
Results: During the entire study, 5.2% in Group 1 and 3.0% in Group 2 experienced at least one SAE; 0.9% and 0.1%, respectively, reported at least one AESI. Three deaths occurred in Group 1. All SAEs, AESIs, and deaths were unrelated to study vaccines. This study supports the safety profile of MenACYW-TT in infants and toddlers aged ≥ 6 weeks.Study registration: Clinicaltrials.gov: NCT03673462; EudraCT: 2019-004459-35.
