Measles and the MMR vaccine — where does the truth lie?

Sources: 14 · Article: 18 161 characters

The STOP NOP Association describes measles as risky for some people, but also attributes possible health benefits to it.

  • Jerzy Zięba and Jerzy Jaśkowski allege a link between MMR and autism, while Piotr Witczak calls this link controversial.
  • These statements do not establish whether the allegations against MMR are true.

The STOP NOP Association attributes a possible positive effect on immunity to measles, and says that susceptibility to infections decreases after the illness.

„?Measles apparently has a positive effect on the immune system. Susceptibility to infections decreases after measles, as indicated by a drop in the number of doctor visits [Kummer 1992]. In the poorest countries, measles reduces the risk of malaria and parasitic diseases [Roth 1992].”?Odra ma najwyraźniej pozytywny wpływ na układ odpornościowy. The STOP NOP Association says that children who have had measles suffer from allergies less often, and that measles vaccination does not provide this protection.

„Children who have had measles suffer from allergies less often, whereas measles vaccination does not provide this protection [Shaheen 1996, Floistrup 2006, Kucukosmanoglu 2006, Rosenlund 2009]. A known positive effect of measles is its therapeutic effect on chronic conditions, such as psoriasis [Chakravati 1996] or a severe kidney disease known as”Dzieci, które przebyły zachorowanie na odrę rzadziej cierpią na alergie, podczas gdy szczepienie przeciw odrze nie daje takiej ochrony [Shaheen 1996, Floistrup 2006, Kucukosmanoglu 2006, Rosenlund 2009]. Znanym pozytywnym efektem odry jest leczniczy wpływ na chroniczne choroby, takie jak łuszczyca [Chakravati 1996] lub ciężkie schorzenie nerek tzw.

The STOP NOP Association also attributes possible benefits to having measles in relation to malaria, parasitic diseases, and some chronic conditions.

„In the poorest countries, measles reduces the risk of malaria and parasitic diseases [Roth 1992]. The STOP NOP Association also cites possible remissions of some diseases and a lower risk of certain cancers and multiple sclerosis after measles.

„There is much to suggest that having childhood diseases, especially measles, rubella, and mumps, results in a lower risk later in life of developing cancer, including Hodgkin's lymphoma and other types of lymphoma, as well as breast cancer [Albonico 1998, Glaser 2005, Montella 2006]. Multiple sclerosis is also less common in people who had measles in childhood [Kesselring 1990].”Wiele wskazuje na to, że przebycie chorób dziecięcych, w szczególności odry, różyczki i świnki, owocuje w dalszym życiu obniżonym ryzykiem zachorowania na raka, w tym ziarnicę złośliwą i inne rodzaje chłoniaka oraz raka piersi [Albonico 1998, Glaser 2005, Montella 2006]. Także stwardnienie rozsiane zdarza się rzadziej u osób, które przeszły w dzieciństwie odrę [Kesselring 1990].

Some parents say they noticed autistic disorders in previously healthy children shortly after MMR vaccination.

„Complications after vaccination: chronic inflammation and joint pain (these complications may appear several weeks after vaccination and last from a few weeks to many years, or even a lifetime); in Russia, this is officially recognized as a complication of rubella vaccination; chronic fatigue syndrome; spinal cord disorders; Guillain–Barré syndrome; carpal tunnel syndrome; various types of neuropathy; some parents observe autistic disorders appearing in their previously completely healthy children shortly after MMR vaccination.”Powikłania po szczepieniu: przewlekłe zapalenie i ból stawów (te powikłania mogą objawić się kilka tygodni po szczepieniu i trwać od paru tygodni do wielu lat, a nawet przez całe życie); w Rosji jest to oficjalnie uznawane powikłanie po szczepieniu przeciwko różyczce; syndrom chronicznego zmęczenia; schorzenia rdzenia kręgowego; zespół Guillaina-Barrego; zespół cieśni nadgarstka; neuropatie różnego rodzaju; niektórzy rodzice obserwują wystąpienie u swych dotychczas całkowicie zdrowych dzieci wystąpienie zaburzeń autystycznych tuż po szczepieniu MMR.

The STOP NOP Association lists possible adverse effects after MMR vaccination, including encephalitis and changes affecting lymphocytes and interferon production.

„there are numerous reports of measles encephalitis occurring after measles vaccination (this may also be a complication of the disease itself); Japanese researchers conducted an experiment in which they showed that vaccination causes changes in lymphocytes: interferon production is impaired, even though interferon protects the body against infectious and oncological diseases; this condition lasts at least a year; in children who receive the measles vaccine, vitamin A levels fall sharply and for a long time.”istnieją liczne doniesienia o odrowym zapaleniu mózgu występującym po zaszczepieniu przeciwko odrze (może to być również powikłanie po samej chorobie); badacze japońscy przeprowadzili eksperyment, w którym wykazali, że szczepienie powoduje zaburzenia w limfocytach: dochodzi do upośledzenia produkcji interferonu, który zabezpiecza organizm przed chorobami zakaźnymi i onkologicznymi; stan ten trwa co najmniej rok; u dzieci, które otrzymują szczepionkę przeciwko odrze silnie i na długo obniża się poziom witaminy A.
Piotr Witczak

Piotr Witczak describes the link between autism and the MMR vaccine as controversial and notes that MMR does not contain thimerosal.

„Moreover, the observed and still controversial link between autism and the MMR vaccine[22][23] (which does not contain thimerosal) seems to suggest that exposure to mercury in vaccines is not the only environmental factor that may be responsible for the development of ASD[24].”Co więcej, obserwowany i wciąż kontrowersyjny związek autyzmu ze szczepionką MMR[22][23] (która nie zawiera tiomersalu) wydaje się sugerować, że narażenie na rtęć obecną w szczepionkach nie jest jedynym czynnikiem środowiskowym, który może być odpowiedzialny za rozwój ASD[24].
Piotr Witczak

Piotr Witczak identifies mercury as a possible cause of autism, but also notes that science points to other potential factors.

„Although science points to many other potential causes of autism, mercury still seems to be the main cause, due to its widespread presence, its status as the most toxic heavy metal found in the environment[25], and its exceptionally wide-ranging effects on human physiology[26].”Chociaż nauka wskazuje na wiele innych potencjalnych czynników etiologicznych autyzmu, to jednak rtęć wydaje się wciąż dominującą przyczyną, ze względu na jej szerokie rozpowszechnienie, status najbardziej toksycznego metalu ciężkiego występującego w środowisku[25] oraz wyjątkowo wszechstronne właściwości modulujące fizjologię człowieka[26].
Jerzy Jaśkowski

Jerzy Jaśkowski claims that the MMR vaccine causes an 800% increase in autism and attributes this claim to Merck virologists.

„Here are a few questions to consider: If vaccines work so well and do not cause autism, why do the Merck virologists who developed these vaccines publicly claim that the results were falsified as early as 2001? The company has evidence that the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine causes an 800% increase in autism.”Poniżej kilka pytań do przemyślenia: Jeżeli szczepionki działają tak dobrze i nie powodują autyzmu, to dlaczego wirusolodzy firmy Merck opracowujący te szczepionki twierdzą publicznie, że wyniki zostały sfałszowane już w 2001 roku? Firma ma dowody, że szczepionka przeciwko odrze, śwince i różyczce powoduje wzrost autyzmu o 800%.
Jerzy Zięba

Jerzy Zięba maintains that evidence exists of a link between vaccination and autism and accuses the authorities and doctors of failing to respond to this information.

„The evidence that such a link exists between vaccination and autism is indisputable. This information should serve as a serious warning signal to the Minister of Health, prompting at least an immediate review of the facts. Especially since the person exposing this fraud is someone who took part in it.”Dowody na istnienie takiego związku pomiędzy szczepieniami i autyzmem są nie do podważenia.

The STOP NOP Association describes mumps outbreaks among people who received two doses of MMR and offers waning vaccine-induced immunity as a possible explanation.

„Mumps vaccine: outbreaks among fully vaccinated people Over the past 15 years, outbreaks have occurred in the United States and other countries among fully vaccinated populations who received two doses of the MMR vaccine against mumps.45 46 Waning immunity after vaccination is suspected to be the cause.”Szczepionka przeciwko śwince: Ogniska chorobowe wśród w pełni zaszczepionych W ciągu ostatnich 15 lat w Stanach Zjednoczonych i w innych krajach pojawiały się ogniska chorobowe wśród w pełni zaszczepionych populacji osób, które otrzymały dwie dawki szczepionki MMR przeciwko śwince.45 46 Za przyczynę podejrzewa się zanikającą odporność po szczepieniu.

Research from PubMed · Europe PMC

We selected 4 studies with the best, positive results. This is a selection, not a full review of all research.

Total number of studies on this topic in PubMed: 3 945.

The review evaluates the effectiveness and safety of MMR vaccines in children; its abstract states that their effectiveness is established.

Aim of the study: Measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella (chickenpox) are serious diseases that can lead to serious complications, disability, and death. However, public debate over the safety of the trivalent MMR vaccine and the resultant drop in vaccination coverage in several countries persists, despite its almost universal use and accepted effectiveness. This is an update of a review published in 2005 and updated in 2012.

Results: We included 138 studies (23,480,668 participants). Fifty-one studies (10,248,159 children) assessed vaccine effectiveness and 87 studies (13,232,509 children) assessed the association between vaccines and a variety of harms. We included 74 new studies in this 2019 version of the review. Effectiveness: Vaccine effectiveness in preventing measles was 95% after one dose (relative risk (RR) 0.05, 95% CI 0.02 to 0.13; 7 cohort studies; 12,039 children; moderate certainty evidence) and 96% after two doses (RR 0.04, 95% CI 0.01 to 0.28; 5 cohort studies; 21,604 children; moderate certainty evidence).

The meta-analysis found no link between MMR vaccination and autism.

Aim of the study: There has been enormous debate regarding the possibility of a link between childhood vaccinations and the subsequent development of autism. This has in recent times become a major public health issue with vaccine preventable diseases increasing in the community due to the fear of a 'link' between vaccinations and autism.

Results: The cohort data revealed no relationship between vaccination and autism (OR: 0.99; 95% CI: 0.92 to 1.06) or ASD (OR: 0.91; 95% CI: 0.68 to 1.20), nor was there a relationship between autism and MMR (OR: 0.84; 95% CI: 0.70 to 1.01), or thimerosal (OR: 1.00; 95% CI: 0.77 to 1.31), or mercury (Hg) (OR: 1.00; 95% CI: 0.93 to 1.07). Similarly, the case-control data found no evidence of increased risk of developing autism or ASD following MMR, Hg, or thimerosal exposure when grouped by condition (OR: 0.90, 95% CI: 0.83 to 0.98; p=0.02) or grouped by exposure type (OR: 0.85, 95% CI: 0.76 to 0.95; p=0.01). Findings of this meta-analysis suggest that vaccinations are not associated with the development of autism or autism spectrum disorder. Furthermore, the components of the vaccines (thimerosal or mercury) or multiple vaccines (MMR) are not associated with the development of autism or autism spectrum disorder.

A systematic review with high-certainty evidence found no increased risk of autism after MMR vaccination.

Aim of the study: Understanding the safety of vaccines is critical to inform decisions about vaccination. Our objective was to conduct a systematic review of the safety of vaccines recommended for children, adults, and pregnant women in the United States.

Results: Of 56,603 reviewed citations, 338 studies reported in 518 publications met inclusion criteria. For children, certainty of evidence (SoE) was high for no increased risk of autism following measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. SoE was high for increased risk of febrile seizures with MMR. There was no evidence of increased risk of intussusception with rotavirus vaccine at the latest follow-up (moderate SoE), nor of diabetes (high SoE). There was no evidence of increased risk or insufficient evidence for key adverse events for newer vaccines such as 9-valent human papillomavirus and meningococcal B vaccines. For adults, there was no evidence of increased risk (varied SoE) or insufficient evidence for key adverse events for the new adjuvanted inactivated influenza vaccine and recombinant adjuvanted zoster vaccine. We found no evidence of increased risk (varied SoE) for key adverse events among pregnant women following tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis vaccine, including stillbirth (moderate SoE).

The introduction of a two-dose MMR schedule in Jiangsu Province was associated with a decline in mumps cases.

Aim of the study: Although China upgraded its mumps vaccine schedule to two doses, quantitative evaluations of real-world, population-level effects remain limited. This study systematically evaluated the immediate and long-term impacts of 1-dose and 2-dose measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccination strategies on mumps incidence in Jiangsu Province.

Results: Following the introduction of the 1-dose MMR policy in 2008, no significant long-term downward trend in mumps incidence was observed across the province (IRR = 1.002, P = 0.773), and periodic outbreaks every 3 to 5 years persisted. Following the comprehensive implementation of the 2-dose MMR strategy in July 2020, the overall incidence exhibited a significant accelerated downward trend of 1.0% per month (IRR = 0.990, P = 0.019). Subgroup analyses revealed that the most heavily burdened 5-9 and 10-14 age groups experienced the most significant long-term declines (1.0% and 1.5% per month, respectively). Furthermore, the ≥15 years adult group, which was not directly targeted for vaccination, also showed a long-term reduction (0.9% per month), indicating a significant herd immunity effect. Additionally, the 2-dose policy successfully smoothed out regional incidence disparities, notably mitigating the compensatory outbreaks observed in Northern Jiangsu in 2019.
