A review lists wild pansy as a plant with potential for treating acne, but notes that many plants lack clinical confirmation.

Aim of the study: Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory condition of the pilosebaceous follicles that affects most adolescents. Treatments include topical agents and systemic therapies. Today, the use of herbal remedies is becoming more common, raising concerns about misinformation spread by digital platforms.

Results: The review found that various medicinal plants may have potential for treating acne, including tea tree oil, lavender, licorice, turmeric, and heartsease. Some showed antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, or sebum-reducing effects in laboratory studies or clinical settings. Others lacked strong evidence or clinical validation. Combinations such as tea tree and lavender oils also showed effects in reducing lesions. However, clinical research is lacking for a number of plants traditionally claimed to treat acne vulgaris. Although digital platforms play an important role in sharing health information, they have promoted several acne vulgaris remedies that have not been scientifically verified. Therefore, cyberspace is not currently considered a reliable source of treatment information for people without medical expertise.
