Coptis is said to help with indigestion and inflammation of the digestive tract caused by protozoa or bacteria.

„It undoubtedly treats indigestion and inflammation of the digestive tract caused by parasitic protozoa and bacteria. Studies have found that Coptis inhibits the release of toxins by bacterial cells. Some studies report that Coptis does not inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli, Proteus vulgaris, Salmonella typhi, Paratyphi S., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, or Shigella sonnei.”Niewątpliwie leczy niestrawność i nieżyty przewodu pokarmowego wywołane pierwotniakami pasożytniczymi i bakteriami.

A review of animal studies found that berberine improved indicators of kidney function and inflammation in diabetic kidney disease.

Aim of the study: Coptis Chinensis Franch is widely used in the treatment of diabetes, and berberine is its primary bioactive component. Evidence from previous studies has shown that berberine supplementation is effective in treating diabetic nephropathy (DN) in animal models.

Results: Meanwhile, berberine also improved inflammatory indicators, such as IL-6 and TNF-α, and oxidative stress indicators, such as superoxide dismutase activity and malondialdehyde content. Additionally, berberine lowered the levels of known risk factors, including triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL). These beneficial effects of berberine in DN may be related to its anti-fibrotic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidative stress properties. However, to assess berberine’s effects on diabetic nephropathy and its safety more accurately, additional large-scale, long-term, and high-quality preclinical trials are needed to confirm these findings before clinical application.

In mice, alkaloids from Coptis reduced blood lipid levels and fatty liver.

Aim of the study: Hyperlipidemia and its associated hepatic steatosis pose significant global health burdens, necessitating novel therapeutic strategies. Coptis chinensis Franch total alkaloids (TAC) exhibit lipid-modulating properties, but their mechanisms are not yet fully understood. We aim to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy and molecular mechanisms of TAC in a mouse model of hyperlipidemia-associated NAFLD.

Results: TAC treatment demonstrated significant dose-dependent improvements across multiple parameters. Compared to HFD controls, TAC reduced body weight by 21.3% and liver index by 18.7%, while lowering fasting blood glucose levels by 32.4%. Serum analyses showed substantial reductions in total cholesterol (46.2%), triglycerides (38.5%), and LDL-cholesterol (52.1%), accompanied by a 29.8% increase in HDL-cholesterol. Liver function improved markedly, with ALT and AST levels decreasing by 57.3% and 49.6%, respectively. Histopathological examination revealed a 68.4% reduction in hepatic lipid accumulation. At the molecular level, TAC treatment resulted in a 2.7-fold increase in AMPK phosphorylation while significantly reducing HMGCR expression by 63.1% and nuclear SREBP-1c levels by 71.5%. At the same time, TAC increased PPARα and LXRα expression by 3.1-fold and 2.4-fold, respectively, leading to increased expression of the fat-breakdown enzymes LPL and HL by 2.8-fold and 2.1-fold.

The review suggests that Coptis rhizome may have beneficial effects on cardiovascular disease risk factors, including atherosclerosis and lipid disorders.

Aim of the study: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are among the leading causes of illness and death in both the developed and developing world. Rhizoma coptidis (RC), known as Huang Lian in China, is the dried rhizome of medicinal plants from the Ranunculaceae family, such as Coptis chinensis Franch, C.

Results: RC has been found to have significant beneficial effects on major risk factors for CVDs, including anti-atherosclerotic, lipid-lowering, anti-obesity, and anti-hepatic-steatosis effects. It also protects the heart muscle from injury caused by myocardial ischemia-reperfusion. These properties have been attributed to bioactive compounds in RC, such as berberine, coptisine, palmatine, epiberberine, jatrorrhizine, and magnoflorine. All of these have been shown to protect the heart by affecting various factors that contribute to CVD through a range of pathways.

In mice, a combination of Coptis alkaloids and ginsenosides improved glucose tolerance and lowered fasting blood glucose and the insulin resistance index.

Aim of the study: Coptis chinensis Franch. and Panax ginseng C.

Results: The network recovery index (NRI) score of the combined treatment group with a 4∶1 ratio exceeded that of groups treated with individual components. The research found that activation of adenosine 5'-monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK)/acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) signaling in the liver played a crucial role in the synergistic treatment of T2DM, as confirmed by western blot experiments in db/db mice. These findings show that the 4∶1 combination of total alkaloids from Coptis chinensis and total ginsenosides from Panax ginseng significantly improves insulin resistance and glucose and lipid metabolism disorders in db/db mice, with greater effects than the individual treatments. The synergistic mechanism is associated with increased activity of the AMPK/ACC signaling pathway.

In mice, coptisine eased acute lung injury by reducing swelling, inflammatory infiltration, and pro-inflammatory cytokine levels.

Aim of the study: The research aimed to clarify COP's protective effects against ALI and the molecular mechanisms behind them.

Results: Transcriptomic profiling identified the PI3K/AKT pathway as the central mediator of COP's anti-ALI effects, with suppression of ferroptosis as a key mechanism. COP administration significantly reduced LPS-induced pulmonary edema, inflammatory infiltration, and pro-inflammatory cytokine levels in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. Mechanistically, COP restored redox balance by increasing glutathione (GSH), catalase (CAT), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels while reducing Fe2+ accumulation and lipid peroxidation. Furthermore, COP reversed the reduced levels of ferroptosis-related proteins, including nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), solute carrier family 7 member 11 (SLC7A11/xCT), and glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4). The therapeutic effects of COP were abolished by ML385, a selective Nrf2 inhibitor, confirming that its activity depends on Nrf2.

The study found that components of the Wuji Wan formula, which contains Coptis chinensis, protected against gastric ulcers in cell and rat studies.

Aim of the study: The classical Chinese formula Wuji Wan (WJW), which combines Coptis chinensis, Evodia rutaecarpa, and Paeonia lactiflora, offers benefits for treating gastric ulcers, as supported by its historical use in traditional practice. This study aimed to clarify the protective properties of WJW against gastric ulcers (GU) by systematically identifying its bioactive compounds and targets, and characterizing their basic molecular mechanisms.

Results: Seven key bioactive components—palmatine, coptisine, rutaecarpine, berberine, paeoniflorin, albiflorin, and evodiamine—were identified as effective components of WJW. These components act against GU by targeting PIK3CA, which in turn suppresses the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway, reducing inflammatory responses and inhibiting cell death. The importance of this study lies not only in clarifying the composition and mechanism of WJW against GU, but also in demonstrating a target-driven approach to discovering active ingredients in complex formulas. This approach provides a scientific framework for developing standardized botanical medicines.
