Vaccines and autism — why does this controversy keep coming back?

Sources: 19 · Article: 22 342 characters

Jerzy Jaśkowski presents the link between autism and vaccination as indisputable.

  • Piotr Witczak calls the link between autism and the MMR vaccine controversial and mentions environmental factors alongside genetic susceptibility.
  • Hubert Czerniak points to vaccination that is too early and toxic as the main cause of autism.
  • The dispute also involves court rulings, compensation, the history of Wakefield’s publication, and allegations of fraud.

What the authors write

Piotr Witczak

Piotr Witczak mentions environmental factors alongside genetic susceptibility as possible contributors to the causes of autism.

„In the etiology of ASD, not only genetic susceptibility matters, but above all a range of environmental factors[5][6], which few people know about. Children with autism usually need lifelong residential care, costly therapies, and special education, and they also have a significant impact on their parents’ productivity.”W etiologii ASD znaczenie ma nie tylko podatność genetyczna, ale przede wszystkim szereg czynników środowiskowych[5][6], o czym niewiele osób wie.
Piotr Witczak

Piotr Witczak cites studies linking autism symptoms to mercury and other heavy metal poisoning.

„The authors of the study stated that “every significant feature of autism has been demonstrated in at least several cases of documented mercury poisoning.” Later studies and reviews of the scientific literature confirmed that mercury (and other heavy metals) can lead to the development of ASD.”Autorzy pracy stwierdzili, że „każda istotna cecha autyzmu została wykazana w co najmniej kilku przypadkach udokumentowanego zatrucia rtęcią”.
Piotr Witczak

Piotr Witczak points to studies linking mercury and lead levels with an autism diagnosis, but notes that public health institutions do not consider a link with ethylmercury from vaccines to be proven.

„Public health institutions still maintain that no link has been proven between children’s exposure to ethylmercury from vaccines and an increase in ASD cases. This position apparently rests on conclusions from studies funded by the US Centers for Disease Control...”Instytucje zdrowia publicznego wciąż utrzymują, że nie udowodniono związku między narażeniem dzieci na etylortęć ze szczepionek a wzrostem przypadków ASD.
Piotr Witczak

Piotr Witczak calls the link between autism and the MMR vaccine controversial and points out that mercury would not be the only possible environmental factor.

„Furthermore, the observed and still controversial link between autism and the MMR vaccine[22][23] (which does not contain thiomersal) seems to suggest that exposure to mercury in vaccines is not the only environmental factor that may be responsible for the development of ASD[24].”Co więcej, obserwowany i wciąż kontrowersyjny związek autyzmu ze szczepionką MMR[22][23] (która nie zawiera tiomersalu) wydaje się sugerować, że narażenie na rtęć obecną w szczepionkach nie jest jedynym czynnikiem środowiskowym, który może być odpowiedzialny za rozwój ASD[24].

The STOP NOP Association describes an Italian ruling awarding compensation for autism which, according to the lawsuit, appeared after vaccination.

„In 2014, a court in Milan ruled that the state must pay compensation and a supplement to a pension for autism that developed in a child after the Infanrix Hexa vaccine. The ruling is final. The parents sued the ministry, “showing that an autistic syndrome had been caused in their son by vaccinations that contained, in a dangerous way, certain heavy metals and contaminants—such as aluminum—whose toxicity would increase in the presence of other ingredients, such as polysorbate 80—and mercury.”

The STOP NOP Association points out that the dispute includes the history of Wakefield’s publication and allegations of fraud.

Jerzy Jaśkowski

Jerzy Jaśkowski presents the link between autism and vaccination as indisputable and cites institutions, courts, and publications.

„The link between autism and vaccination can be considered indisputable. It has been confirmed by US government agencies, the US Federal Court, a court in Italy in 2012, the president of pharmaceutical giant Merck in a disclosed GSK company report, and numerous scientific publications.”Związek autyzmu ze szczepieniami można uznać za bezdyskusyjny.

Jerzy Jaśkowski cites environmental factors as the cause of an increase in illnesses among people with genetic susceptibility.

„As Dr. Francis S. Collins, MD, PhD, current director of the National Institutes of Health, whose budget is 30.5 billion dollars—greater than Poland’s entire healthcare expenditure—said in 2006, when he was director of the National Human Genome Research Institute: “The recent increase in chronic diseases, such as diabetes, childhood asthma, obesity, or autism, cannot be caused by changes in the human gene pool, because such changes take much more time. They must be caused by changes in the environment, which can cause illness in people who are genetically predisposed.””Jak twierdzi dr Francis S.Collins Md.PhD, obecny dyrektor Budżetu Narodowego Instytutu Zdrowia z budżetem 30.5 miliarda dolarów, a więc większym, aniżeli wydatki całej Polski na służbę zdrowia, oświadczył w 2006 roku jako dyrektor Narodowego Instytutu Badań Ludzkiego Genomu: „Niedawny wzrost chorób przewlekłych, takich jak cukrzyca, astma u dzieci, otyłość czy autyzm nie może być spowodowany zmianami w puli genów ludzkich, ponieważ zmiany te wymagają znacznie więcej czasu.

Jerzy Jaśkowski accuses a manufacturer of falsifying results concerning the MMR vaccine and an increase in autism.

„The company has evidence that the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine increases autism by 800%. If toxicologists say that mercury and aluminum are neurotoxins that damage the central nervous system, meaning the brain, why are they injected directly into the blood of children [who do not have a blood-brain barrier] and supposedly do not damage the brain?”Firma ma dowody, że szczepionka przeciwko odrze, śwince i różyczce powoduje wzrost autyzmu o 800%. Jeżeli toksykolodzy twierdzą, że rtęć i aluminium są neurotoksynami uszkadzającymi centralny układ nerwowy, czyli mózg, to dlaczego wstrzykiwane są dzieciom [nieposiadającym bariery krew – mózg] bezpośrednio do krwi i rzekomo nie uszkadzają mózgu?
Hubert Czerniak

Hubert Czerniak presents vaccination that is too early and toxic as the main cause of autism.

„Numerous pieces of evidence show that excessive, too-early, and toxic vaccinations are the main cause of autism. Doctors often insist that autism is a genetic disease because it is diagnosed mainly in children. It is worth noting that we hardly ever see autism among unvaccinated children.”Liczne dowody wskazują, że nadmierne, zbyt wczesne i toksyczne szczepienia są główną przyczyną autyzmu.

Jerzy Zięba cites a figure he gives for the increase in autism risk after the hepatitis B vaccine.

„Official data from the US Centers for Disease Control state that after the hepatitis B vaccine is given, the risk of autism increased by 762%! I point out that this concerns just one vaccine, while according to the vaccination schedule children receive 30 vaccines before their second birthday.”Oficjalne dane amerykańskiego Urzędu ds.
Stowarzyszenie STOP NOP

Jerzy Jaśkowski cites cases in which courts linked vaccination to encephalopathy or features of autism.

„The court found that “this claim is strongly supported” and that “the evidence does not preponderate in favor of Richelle’s condition resulting from factors unrelated to the administration of the vaccine.” Hannah Poling—the court recognized that Hannah’s vaccinations worsened her mitochondrial disorder, leading to “features of autism spectrum disorder.””Sąd ocenił, że „twierdzenie to jest silnie poparte” i że „nie ma przewagi dowodów, że stan Richellego wynika z czynników niezwiązanych z podawaniem szczepionki”. Hannah Poling – sąd przyznał, że szczepienia Hannah pogłębiały zaburzenia mitochondrialne, co doprowadziło do „cech zaburzeń spektrum autyzmu”.
Jerzy Jaśkowski

Jerzy Jaśkowski contrasts the low rate of autism among unvaccinated Amish people with the higher rate among vaccinated children.

„Among the Amish, who do not vaccinate their children, autism is practically unknown, occurring in 1 in 10,000 births. Among vaccinated children, especially boys, autism is diagnosed in 1 in 56 births. In South Korea, where all kinds of vaccines are being introduced, the rate of autism has already reached 1 child in 38 births.”U Amiszy nieszczepiących swoich dzieci autyzm jest praktycznie nieznany, występuje 1 na 10 000 porodów.
Stowarzyszenie STOP NOP

The STOP NOP Association lists compensation for post-vaccination autism as one of the topics in the dispute.

„1. Autism and vaccination—judge the facts for yourself. 2. The Wakefield saga—how “fraud” was fabricated. 3. Compensation for post-vaccination autism.”1. Autyzm a szczepienia – sam oceń fakty. 2. Saga Wakefielda – jak spreparowano „oszustwo”. 3. Odszkodowania za autyzm poszczepienny.

A systematic review found strong evidence that the MMR vaccine does not increase the risk of autism.

Aim of the study: Understanding the safety of vaccines is critical to inform decisions about vaccination. Our objective was to conduct a systematic review of the safety of vaccines recommended for children, adults, and pregnant women in the United States.

Results: Of 56,603 reviewed citations, 338 studies reported in 518 publications met inclusion criteria. For children, the strength of evidence (SoE) was high for no increased risk of autism following measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccination. SoE was high for an increased risk of febrile seizures with MMR. There was no evidence of increased risk of intussusception with rotavirus vaccine at the latest follow-up (moderate SoE), nor of diabetes (high SoE). There was no evidence of increased risk or insufficient evidence for key adverse events for newer vaccines such as the 9-valent human papillomavirus and meningococcal B vaccines. For adults, there was no evidence of increased risk (varying SoE) or insufficient evidence for key adverse events for the new adjuvanted inactivated influenza vaccine and recombinant adjuvanted zoster vaccine. We found no evidence of increased risk (varying SoE) for key adverse events among pregnant women following tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis vaccine, including stillbirth (moderate SoE).

A meta-analysis found no link between vaccination, including MMR, and autism.

Aim of the study: There has been enormous debate regarding the possibility of a link between childhood vaccinations and the subsequent development of autism. This has in recent times become a major public health issue with vaccine preventable diseases increasing in the community due to the fear of a 'link' between vaccinations and autism.

Results: The cohort data revealed no relationship between vaccination and autism (OR: 0.99; 95% CI: 0.92 to 1.06) or ASD (OR: 0.91; 95% CI: 0.68 to 1.20), nor was there a relationship between autism and MMR (OR: 0.84; 95% CI: 0.70 to 1.01), or thimerosal (OR: 1.00; 95% CI: 0.77 to 1.31), or mercury (Hg) (OR: 1.00; 95% CI: 0.93 to 1.07). Similarly, the case-control data found no evidence of increased risk of developing autism or ASD following exposure to MMR, Hg, or thimerosal, whether grouped by condition (OR: 0.90, 95% CI: 0.83 to 0.98; p=0.02) or by exposure type (OR: 0.85, 95% CI: 0.76 to 0.95; p=0.01). The findings of this meta-analysis suggest that vaccinations are not associated with the development of autism or autism spectrum disorder. Furthermore, vaccine components (thimerosal or mercury) or multiple vaccines (MMR) are not associated with the development of autism or autism spectrum disorder.

A large study of children found no increased risk of autism after MMR vaccination, including in the subgroups analyzed.

Aim of the study: The hypothesized link between the measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine and autism continues to cause concern and challenge vaccine uptake. To evaluate whether the MMR vaccine increases the risk for autism in children, subgroups of children, or time periods after vaccination.

Results: During 5 025 754 person-years of follow-up, 6517 children were diagnosed with autism (incidence rate, 129.7 per 100 000 person-years). Comparing MMR-vaccinated with MMR-unvaccinated children yielded a fully adjusted autism hazard ratio of 0.93 (95% CI, 0.85 to 1.02). Similarly, no increased risk for autism after MMR vaccination was consistently observed in subgroups of children defined according to sibling history of autism, autism risk factors (based on a disease risk score) or other childhood vaccinations, or during specified time periods after vaccination. The study strongly supports that MMR vaccination does not increase the risk for autism, does not trigger autism in susceptible children, and is not associated with clustering of autism cases after vaccination. It adds to previous studies through significant additional statistical power and by addressing hypotheses of susceptible subgroups and clustering of cases.

A large population study found no link between MMR vaccination and autism.

Aim of the study: It has been suggested that vaccination against measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) is a cause of autism.

Results: Of the 537,303 children in the cohort (representing 2,129,864 person-years), 440,655 (82.0 percent) had received the MMR vaccine. We identified 316 children with a diagnosis of autistic disorder and 422 with a diagnosis of other autistic-spectrum disorders. After adjustment for potential confounders, the relative risk of autistic disorder in the group of vaccinated children, as compared with the unvaccinated group, was 0.92 (95 percent confidence interval, 0.68 to 1.24), and the relative risk of another autistic-spectrum disorder was 0.83 (95 percent confidence interval, 0.65 to 1.07). There was no association between age at vaccination, time since vaccination, or date of vaccination and the development of autistic disorder. This study provides strong evidence against the hypothesis that MMR vaccination causes autism.

The study found no temporal link between MMR vaccination and the onset of autism.

Aim of the study: We undertook an epidemiological study to investigate whether measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine may be causally associated with autism.

Results: We identified 498 cases of autism (261 of core autism, 166 of atypical autism, and 71 of Asperger's syndrome). In 293 cases the diagnosis could be confirmed by the criteria of the International Classification of Diseases, tenth revision (ICD10: 214 [82%] core autism, 52 [31%] atypical autism, 27 [38%] Asperger's syndrome). There was a steady increase in cases by year of birth with no sudden “step-up” or change in the trend line after the introduction of MMR vaccination. There was no difference in age at diagnosis between cases vaccinated before or after 18 months of age and those never vaccinated. There was no temporal association between onset of autism within 1 or 2 years after MMR vaccination (relative incidence compared with control period 0.94 [95% CI 0.60-1.47] and 1.09 [0.79-1.52]). Developmental regression was not clustered in the months after vaccination (relative incidence within 2 months and 4 months after MMR vaccination 0.92 [0.38-2.21] and 1.00 [0.52-1.95]).

The review found that fear of autism was the most commonly cited reason for parents’ hesitation about MMR vaccination.

Aim of the study: Ongoing outbreaks of measles threaten its elimination status in the United States. Its resurgence points to lower parental vaccine confidence and local pockets of unvaccinated and undervaccinated individuals.

Results: Fear of autism was the most cited reason for MMR hesitancy. Vaccine hesitancy toward MMR and other childhood vaccines clustered in middle- to high-income areas among mothers with a college-level education or higher who preferred internet/social media narratives over physician-based vaccine information. They had low parental trust, low perceived disease susceptibility, and were skeptical of vaccine safety and benefits. Combating MMR vaccine misinformation and hesitancy requires intersectoral and multifaceted approaches at various socioecological levels to address the social drivers of vaccine behavior.

The review describes why the myth of a link between vaccination and autism persists despite extensive evidence to the contrary.

Aim of the study: Among all of the studied potential causes of autism, vaccines have received some of the most scrutiny and have been the topic of many evidence-based studies. These efforts have led the great majority of scientists, physicians, and public health researchers to refute causation between vaccines and autism.

In a study of parents, vaccine refusal increased after a child’s diagnosis, and a common reason was the belief that vaccines had caused the child’s developmental disorder.

Results: Parental concerns about vaccines persist after a diagnosis of neurodevelopmental disorders. Tailored education and communication strategies are essential to support informed vaccine decision-making in these families and to prevent refusal for both diagnosed children and their siblings.
