The tetanus vaccine — what do its critics say about it?

Sources: 9 · Article: 8 980 characters

The STOP NOP Association describes the ethylmercury in thimerosal, which is used in products including tetanus vaccines, as toxic to the nervous system.

  • It cites an account of serious brain damage or death after one or more routine vaccines were given, including the tetanus vaccine.
  • It also lists myocarditis and pericarditis as complications observed after tetanus vaccines.
  • When DTP and Hib vaccines are given at the same time, it lists, among other things, allergic reactions, seizures, neurological disorders, and pain or restricted movement in a limb.

Ethylmercury is found in thimerosal, which is used in medical products, including tetanus vaccines, and the STOP NOP Association describes it as toxic to the nervous system.

„Methylmercury and ethylmercury share chemical properties. Both substances significantly disrupt the development and functioning of the central nervous system. Thimerosal is highly toxic at very low levels of exposure and, according to some studies, is more harmful than methylmercury.”Metylortęć i etylortęć mają wspólne właściwości chemiczne. Obie te substancje znacząco zakłócają rozwój i funkcjonowanie ośrodkowego układu nerwowego. Tiomersal jest bardzo toksyczny przy bardzo niskim poziomie narażenia i, według niektórych badań, jest bardziej szkodliwy niż metylortęć.

In the account cited, symptoms leading to serious brain damage or death occurred shortly after one or more routine vaccines were given, including the tetanus vaccine.

„When examining the personal medical histories of these children, based on caregivers’ accounts and medical records, I quickly established that shortly before the onset of the illness that led to serious brain damage or death, they had received one or more of a series of so-called routine vaccines against hepatitis B, diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis, polio, and Haemophilus influenzae.”Badając osobistą historię medyczną tych dzieci, w oparciu o zapisy opiekunów i dokumentację medyczną, szybko ustaliłam, że w krótkim czasie przed wystąpieniem objawów choroby prowadzącej do poważnego uszkodzenia mózgu lub śmierci podano im jedną lub więcej z serii tak zwanych rutynowych szczepionek przeciwko żółtaczce typu B, błonicy, tężcowi i krztuścowi, polio oraz haemophilus influenzae.?

Myocarditis and pericarditis have also been described as complications observed after tetanus vaccines.

„They have been observed not only after smallpox and/or polio vaccines, but also after vaccines against diphtheria and tetanus, as well as pertussis, cholera, and sometimes typhoid fever. They are usually accompanied by general symptoms and a fever above 38°C. When the pericardium is affected, the patient complains of pain in the precordial area that is synchronized with the heartbeat.”Obserwowano je nie tylko po podaniu szczepionek przeciwko ospie i/lub polio, ale również przeciwko błonicy i tężcowi, a także kokluszowi, cholerze i czasem durowi brzusznemu. Z reguły towarzyszą im objawy ogólne i gorączka ponad 38°C. W przypadku zajęcia osierdzia, chory skarży się na synchroniczny z pracą serca ból w okolicy przedsercowej.

When DTP and Hib vaccines are given at the same time, allergic reactions, seizures, neurological disorders, and restricted movement or pain in a limb are among the effects listed.

„enlarged and/or tender lymph nodes, an allergic reaction in the form of hives, rash (macular, papular, or maculopapular), swelling (including facial swelling with difficulty breathing—shortness of breath), or anaphylactic shock, the vaccine contains thimerosal (as a preservative), which may cause an allergic reaction, reduced or lost appetite, inconsolable, continuous crying or a high-pitched scream (cerebral cry) lasting 3 hours or longer, increased irritability, which usually resolves within 24 hours.”powiększenie i (lub) bolesność węzłów chłonnych, reakcja alergiczna w postaci: pokrzywki, wysypki (plamistej, grudkowej, lub plamisto ? grudkowej), obrzęku (w tym obrzęku twarzy z trudnością w oddychaniu ? dusznością), wstrząsu anafilaktycznego, szczepionka zawiera tiomersal (jako środek konserwujący), który może wywołać reakcję alergiczną, zmniejszenie lub utrata apetytu, nieutulony ciągły płacz lub krzyk o wysokich tonach (krzyk mózgowy) trwający 3 godziny lub dłużej, zwiększona drażliwość, która zwykle ustępuje w ciągu 24 ?

Some patients refused vaccination because they were concerned about side effects, needed more information, or preferred to receive it elsewhere.

Aim of the study: The tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap, “tetanus”) vaccine is recommended for adults every 10 years. In a national sample of adult emergency department (ED) patients, we sought to determine (1) their knowledge of the tetanus vaccine and whether they were up to date; (2) reasons for not receiving the vaccine; (3) whether they would accept the vaccine if offered in the ED; and (4) reasons for declining it in the ED if offered.

Results: Of 4326 patients approached, 3285 (75.9%) agreed to participate, and 5 were excluded because their responses were incomplete. Among the 3280 participants, 13.4% had not heard of the vaccine and 58.0% were not up to date. Factors associated with not being up to date included age 34–48 (aOR 0.65; 95% CI 0.53–0.81), African American race (aOR 1.46; 95% CI 1.19–1.79), having no primary care doctor (aOR 1.29; 95% CI 1.04–1.61), and having no insurance (aOR 1.86; 95% CI 1.36–2.56). Among participants who were not up to date, 21.6% would accept the vaccine during their ED visit. The main reasons for declining were needing more information, concerns about side effects, and preferring to get it from their doctor. More than half of adult ED patients are not up to date on the tetanus vaccine, but only one-fifth would accept it if offered during an ED visit. Efforts to increase uptake in the ED should include messages that address vaccine hesitancy.

Some participants mentioned minor side effects after vaccination, although none considered vaccines harmful.

Aim of the study: Background: In this qualitative study, we aimed to evaluate the knowledge, beliefs, and attitudes of Syrian pregnant women living in Türkiye toward tetanus vaccination, vaccine hesitancy, and the perceived benefits and harms of the tetanus vaccine.

Results: However, some women said that they knew nothing about vaccines. Lack of knowledge and not visiting a health institution were reasons for not being vaccinated. Conclusions: Although participants mostly believed that vaccination is necessary and beneficial, some women had no idea what vaccines are specifically for. This lack of knowledge may lead to vaccine hesitancy and refusal.

„Whether it is the DT vaccine (combined with tetanus) or the DPT vaccine (with pertussis added), the World Health Organization (WHO) states that the vaccine is 95% effective. Better sanitation, nutrition, and hygiene may also be important. In any case, physicians no longer see the devastating picture of a patient with diphtheria. As for the pertussis component, the newer “acellular” version, designed to reduce the side effects of the “whole-cell” vaccine, has in fact proved ineffective.”Whether from the DT (combined with tetanus) or DPT (with added pertussis), the World Health Organization (WHO) declares the vaccine to be 95% efficient. Better sanitation, nutrition, and hygiene may also be important. At any rate, physicians just don't see the devastating picture of a patient with diphtheria any more. As for the pertussis component, the newer "acellular" version, designed to lessen the side-effects of the "whole cell" vaccine, has actually proven to be ineffective.

„Horse dung naturally carries tetanus bacteria, which can remain dormant in enclosed spores for decades (4). While the chance that I would actually get tetanus was probably quite small, I thought it was a “good idea” to get a tetanus shot in those circumstances. My doctor agreed. I got the shot and also took plenty of vitamin C. I had also received a single dose of an MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine years before I became pregnant. My doctor argued that this was a good idea if I wanted to have a family. Getting measles while pregnant can cause serious problems for a developing baby.”Horse dung naturally carries tetanus bacteria and can survive dormant in encased spores for decades (4).
