Nutmeg is used for diarrhea, cramps and stomach catarrh, bloating, and other stomach and intestinal disorders.

„Nutmeg and mace (Macis) are used to treat disorders of stomach and intestinal function, including diarrhea, stomach cramps, stomach catarrh, and bloating. They increase serotonin release in the brain. They suppress the hunger center, reducing appetite.”Gałka muszkatołowa i kwiat muszkatołowy (Macis) są stosowane w leczeniu zaburzeń czyności żołądka i jelit, przy biegunce, skurczach żołądka, nieżycie żołądka, wzdęciach. Zwiększa uwalnianie serotoniny w mózgowiu. Hamuje ośrodek głodu, zmniejszając apetyt.
Henryk Różański

Oil rubbed into the skin is said to have warming, antirheumatic, antiseptic, and pain-relieving effects.

„Oil rubbed into the skin has warming, antirheumatic, and antiseptic effects, and shows stronger pain-relieving activity than diclofenac or ketoprofen. Contraindications. In pregnant women, it causes miscarriage. It may cause birth defects in the fetus.”Olejek wcierany w skórę działa rozgrzewająco, przeciwreumatycznie i odkażająco, wykazuje aktywność przeciwbólową silniejszą niż diklofenak, czy ketoprofen. Przeciwwskazania. U kobiet ciężarnych wywołuje poronienia. Może wywołać wady rozwojowe u płodu.

Oil and extracts from nutmeg are said to suppress inflammation and the growth of disease-causing bacteria and fungi.

„Therapeutic and safe doses: 1–2 g of ground nutmeg or mace mixed with honey, taken as an infusion 3 times a day. It can be brewed in milk with honey. Excellent for coughs and colds. Oil and extracts from nutmeg stop the growth of disease-causing bacteria and fungi. Olejek i wyciągi z muszkatołowca powstrzymują rozwój bakterii i grzybów chorobotwórczych. Hamują stany zapalne.

In larger doses, alcoholic extracts may cause dizziness and hallucinations, euphoria, and, in some people, fear and a sense of danger.

„In larger (excessive) doses, alcoholic extracts of mace and nutmeg have intoxicating and hallucinogenic effects. They cause euphoria, but also a sense of fear and danger in some people. This effect is caused by the oil, which contains safrole, elemicin = 1-allyl-3,4,5-trimethoxybenzene, and myristicin = 4-allyl-6-methoxy-1,2-methylenedioxybenzene (phenylpropane derivatives).”Wyciągi alkoholowe z Macis i gałki muszkatołowej działają w większych dawkach (nadmiernych) oszałamiająco i halucynogennie.

Drinking a large amount of an aqueous extract may cause vomiting.

„When consumed in larger amounts as an aqueous extract, nutmeg acts as an emetic. Oil rubbed into the skin has warming, antirheumatic, and antiseptic effects, and shows stronger pain-relieving activity than diclofenac or ketoprofen. Contraindications.”Gałka muszkatołowa wypita w większych ilościach jako wodny wyciąg działa wymiotnie. Olejek wcierany w skórę działa rozgrzewająco, przeciwreumatycznie i odkażająco, wykazuje aktywność przeciwbólową silniejszą niż diklofenak, czy ketoprofen. Przeciwwskazania.

The review describes nutmeg’s potential antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antidiabetic properties, but notes the risk of side effects at high doses.

Aim of the study: With the advancement of scientific knowledge and global awareness, there is a trend toward using natural resources, such as herbal and medicinal plants, to prevent and treat disease. Myristica fragrans, from the Myristicaceae family, offers various medicinal benefits.

Results: However, when used carefully, it has significant therapeutic potential. This article also focuses on industrial applications of M. fragrans as a medicine, a cosmetic agent, and a food ingredient for its aroma and functional properties. However, more clinical research is needed to validate these findings and optimize its effective and safe use in clinical applications.

In a study on mice, nutmeg extract alleviated acute toxin-induced liver injury.

Aim of the study: Nutmeg is a Traditional Chinese Medicine used to treat gastrointestinal diseases. Some reports have indicated that nutmeg has hepatoprotective activity.

Results: Gene expression analysis showed that the hepatoprotective effect of NME was achieved by modulating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα) and reducing oxidative stress. NME could not protect Ppara-null mice from TAA-induced liver injury, suggesting that its protective effect depended on PPARα. Myrislignan, a representative neolignan in nutmeg, showed strong protective activity against TAA-induced liver toxicity. These data show that nutmeg alleviates TAA-induced liver injury by modulating PPARα, and that lignan compounds in nutmeg, such as myrislignan, partly contribute to this effect.

In mice predisposed to colon cancer, nutmeg limited tumor development and reduced IL-6 levels.

Aim of the study: Colon cancer is the most common cancer and the third leading cause of cancer mortality in humans. Using mass spectrometry-based metabolomics, the current study revealed the accumulation of four uremic toxins (cresol sulfate, cresol glucuronide, indoxyl sulfate, and phenyl sulfate) in the serum of mice with colon cancer caused by a mutation in the adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) gene.

Results: These uremic toxins, likely generated by the gut microbiota, were associated with increased expression of the proinflammatory cytokine IL-6 and a disorder of lipid metabolism. Nutmeg, which has antimicrobial activity, reduced the levels of uremic toxins and decreased intestinal tumor development in Apc(min/+) mice. Nutmeg-treated Apc(min/+) mice had lower IL-6 levels and normalized dysregulated lipid metabolism, suggesting that uremic toxins are partly responsible for the metabolic disorders that occur during tumor development. These studies show a potential biochemical link between gut microbial metabolism, inflammation, and metabolic disorders, and suggest that changing the gut microbiota and lipid metabolism through diet or drugs may be effective in strategies to prevent colon cancer.
