The review suggests that preparations from lady’s mantle species may be used for various skin conditions, including acne, eczema, and rashes.

Aim of the study: Skin diseases are common and include a wide range of disorders with different clinical symptoms and causes. Species in the genus Alchemilla offer an option for multidirectional treatment and are used both in traditional medicine and in cosmetic products.

Results: The healing properties of these plants for skin diseases are mainly due to compounds such as tannins, phenolic acids, flavonoids, and anthocyanins. The aim of the study was to review and synthesize published research on the use of Alchemilla species in skincare, covering literature up to December 2024. The literature indicates that, thanks to the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, astringent, and antimicrobial properties of various Alchemilla species, as well as their effects on elastase and ability to inhibit tyrosinase, extracts from these plants may be used successfully for skin rashes, acne, stretch marks, eczema, psoriasis, wrinkles, and other skin problems. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first review of the cosmetic properties of Alchemilla species.

In an open-label study, a glycerin gel containing lady’s mantle sped up the healing of canker sores and eased discomfort.

Aim of the study: Recurrent aphthous ulcers are the most common disease of the oral mucosa. They occur in three types: minor (the most common), major, and herpetiform. However, there are no well-established, reliable, and effective treatments for this condition. Alchemilla vulgaris (lady’s mantle) has traditionally been used for oral hygiene and was recently shown to speed up wound healing when used with glycerin.

Results: When Aphtarine gel was applied to minor mouth ulcers three times a day, it relieved discomfort and led to complete healing in most patients (60.4%) within 2 days and in 75% within 3 days. Without treatment, the figures were 10.4% and 33.3%, respectively; with commonly available treatments, they were 15% and 40%. Most patients liked how easy the product was to apply, as well as its taste and texture. Aphtarine was well tolerated locally, and most patients rated it good to excellent overall. Aphtarine is a safe, well-tolerated, and highly effective promising new treatment for common mouth ulcers.

In rats, lady’s mantle sped up the healing of skin wounds, and in cell studies it increased the growth of cells involved in healing.

Aim of the study: Alchemilla vulgaris has been suggested to have wound-healing properties. Since the growth of epithelial cells and myofibroblasts is needed for wound healing, the effects of A.

Results: Glycerin alone significantly reduced lesion diameter between days 3 and 5, but complete healing occurred a day earlier in rats treated with A. vulgaris. The results show that A. vulgaris has wound-healing properties associated with increased cell division in epithelial cells and myofibroblasts.

In a rat model, lady’s mantle improved hormonal imbalances, ovarian changes, and endothelial dysfunction associated with PCOS.

Aim of the study: Alchemilla vulgaris has traditionally been used to treat gynecological diseases. The anti-inflammatory and vasorelaxant effects of the extract of A.

Results: TNF-α levels were also measured in the thoracic aorta and ovaries. Hormonal imbalances, changes in ovarian structure, and endothelial dysfunction were observed in the PCOS group; these returned to control levels after treatment with AVE. In addition, AVE reduced TNF-α levels in the aorta and ovaries of the PCOS group. Our study suggests that AVE may have beneficial effects in the treatment of PCOS because of its anti-inflammatory and protective effects on blood vessels.

In mice, an ointment containing a mixture of lady’s mantle and mimosa sped up the healing of skin wounds.

Aim of the study: Alchemilla vulgaris and Mimosa tenuiflora (mimosa) have traditionally been used as remedies for skin wounds because of their various biological activities. However, only a few studies have examined the effects of these herbs on wound healing.

Results: In addition, we showed that the herbal mixture increased the movement of HaCaT cells, fibroblasts, and HUVECs across a two-dimensional wound, and promoted the growth of macrophages and lymphatic vessels. Our results showed that the herbal mixture can promote the movement of keratinocytes, fibroblasts, and endothelial cells, as well as the growth of macrophages and lymphatic vessels. It also sped up wound healing. We therefore suggest that this herbal mixture may have potential for treating and managing skin wounds.

In mice, lady’s mantle eased isoproterenol-induced heart damage, and the effect depended on the dose.

Aim of the study: Introduction: Isoproterenol (ISO) is considered a non-selective adrenergic β-agonist. It regulates the force of heart contractions and may damage heart tissue.

Results: In addition, notable reductions in inflammatory markers (IL-1β, TNF-α, and RAGE) and in the NF-κB/p65 pathway were observed in animals exposed to ISO after treatment with AV. The pro-apoptotic marker Bax was also reduced, along with the autophagy markers Beclin1 and LC3, in animals exposed to ISO and treated with AV. Pretreatment with AV significantly reduced ISO-induced heart damage in a dose-dependent way, possibly because of its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. At higher doses of AV, ISO-induced heart injury was notably reversed.

In laboratory studies, lady’s mantle extract protected cells’ genetic material and inhibited the growth of the cancer cells studied.

Aim of the study: Alchemilla vulgaris L. (lady’s mantle) has been used for centuries in Europe and the Balkan countries to treat many conditions and diseases of the reproductive system. However, some of lady’s mantle’s biological activities have been poorly studied and overlooked.

Results: The A. vulgaris extract strongly inhibited the growth of human cell lines derived from different types of tumors (MCF-7, A375, A549, and HCT116). The observed antitumor effect works by blocking cell division, causing caspase-dependent apoptosis, and inducing autophagic cell death. Our study showed that Alchemilla vulgaris L. is a valuable source of bioactive compounds that can protect cell structures from damage, thereby helping to prevent tumor formation and suppress tumor cell growth.

In diabetic rats, a dose of 200 mg/kg of Alchemilla viridiflora extract lowered blood glucose levels.

Aim of the study: Based on the traditional use of Alchemilla L. species to treat diabetes, researchers investigated the effects of a methanol extract of Alchemilla viridiflora (AVM) on enzyme activity in vitro and on blood glucose levels in vivo.

Results: In the in vivo experiment, body weight decreased significantly in AVM-treated animals at all three doses compared with the normal control group. Notably, a dose of 200 mg/kg significantly lowered blood glucose levels on both day 10 and day 20 (p < 0.05). However, the extract had no statistically significant effects on the biochemical parameters tested. Overall, the results suggest that AVM may have potential for treating high blood glucose associated with diabetes and obesity.

In a laboratory study, Alchemilla alpina extract reduced oxidative stress in cells.

Aim of the study: Alchemilla alpina L. (Rosaceae) belongs to a genus widely recognized in traditional medicine for treating gynecological disorders and hormonal imbalances. However, the specific biological activity of A.

Results: A fluorescent screening test using yeast showed strong and selective binding to estrogen receptor α (ERα) and selective inhibition of human recombinant AKR1C3 (59.5%), without affecting AKR1C4. In addition, strong COX-1/COX-2 inhibition (>70%) supported its anti-inflammatory potential. Taken together, these findings provide the first combined evidence of the phenolic richness and multiple biological activities of A. alpina, scientifically supporting its potential for managing hormone-dependent disorders and disorders related to oxidative stress.
