Jan Jaśkowski

Nettle extracts help with short- and long-term urination problems in people with benign prostatic hyperplasia.

„It is estimated that as many as 50% of men aged 51 and older have an enlarged prostate. BPH is the benign form of prostate enlargement. Studies of people with BPH show that nettle extracts help treat short- and long-term urination problems, without side effects (4).”Szacuje się, że aż 50% mężczyzn w wieku 51 lat i starszych ma powiększoną prostatę. BPH – to właśnie łagodna postać przerostu gruczołu. Badania na osobach cierpiących na BPH wykazują, że ekstrakty z pokrzywy pomagają w leczeniu krótko- i długotrwałych problemów z oddawaniem moczu – bez występowania skutków ubocznych (4).
Henryk Różański

Preparations made from nettle root and rhizome improve urination, bladder emptying and urinary control, and also reduce swelling and pain during urination.

„Preparations based on nettle root and rhizome improve urination in people with prostate enlargement. They significantly improve bladder emptying and reduce swelling and pain during urination. Patients gain better control over urination and bladder function.”Preparaty oparte na korzeniu i kłączy pokrzywy poprawiają proces oddawania moczu u chorych na przerost gruczołu krokowego. Opróżnianie pęcherza wydatnie poprawia się, zmniejsza się obrzęk i dolegliwości bólowe przy oddawaniu moczu. Chorzy w większym stopniu kontrolują oddawanie i trzymanie moczu.
Henryk Różański

Henryk Różański lists prostate enlargement as a reason to use nettle and says that its rhizomes may temporarily reduce male fertility.

„Uses: prostate enlargement, overactive thyroid, lack of ovulation, pale skin and weight loss caused by anorexia and anemia, extreme sports, chronic skin diseases, obesity, diabetes, low urine output, urinary stones, inflammation of the urinary tract, hair and nail diseases, reduced resistance to infections, poisoning, detoxifying and rejuvenating (restorative) treatments, rheumatism, arthritis, respiratory catarrh, the common cold, and a tendency to hemorrhage. Contraindications: Cushing’s disease, polycystic ovary syndrome. Nettle rhizomes may temporarily reduce male fertility. Men who plan to father a child in the near future should stop taking nettle preparations.”Wskazania: przerost gruczołu krokowego, nadczynność tarczycy, brak owulacji, bladość skóry i wychudzenie spowodowane anoreksją i niedokrwistością, uprawianie sportów ekstremalnych, przewlekłe choroby skóry, otyłość, cukrzyca, skąpomocz, kamica moczowa, stan zapalny układu moczowego, choroby włosów i paznokci, obniżona odporność na infekcje, zatrucia, kuracje odtruwające i odmładzające (regenerujące), reumatyzm, artretyzm, nieżyt układu oddechowego, przeziębienie, skłonności do krwotoków. Przeciwwskazania: choroba Cushinga, zespół policystycznych jajników. Kłącza pokrzywy mogą przejściowo obniżać płodność mężczyzn. Mężczyźni, którzy planują w najbliższym czasie prokreację powinni odstawić preparaty pokrzywy.
Henryk Różański

The underground parts of nettle may reduce pain, swelling and inflammation of the prostate.

„They reduce pain, swelling and inflammation of the diseased prostate gland. Preparations made from nettle rhizomes and roots regulate metabolism and lower cholesterol, lipid and blood glucose levels. They stimulate blood circulation and improve psychological well-being. They boost blood formation, which is reflected in an increase in the number of red blood cells and lymphocytes and in blood hemoglobin levels.”Zmniejszą ból, obrzęk i stan zapalny chorego gruczołu krokowego. Preparaty z kłączy i korzeni pokrzywy regulują przemianę materii, obniżają poziom cholesterolu, lipidów i glukozy we krwi.

In a 12-week study, nettle root extract had a moderate effect on BPH symptoms and caused no reported adverse effects.

Aim of the study: Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a common urological disorder as men get older. BPH can cause uncomfortable urinary tract symptoms. Given the high incidence of the disease, further research is an undeniable necessity for its better management. In this research, the efficacy of Urtica Dioica root extract (UDE) on clinical and biochemical parameters were evaluated in this type of patients.

Results: UDE had a moderate effect on IPSS, a small effect on serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), a moderate to large effect on malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, and a moderate effect on superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. Overall, the effects of UDE on other parameters were negligible compared with the comparison group and were not significant. No side effects were observed in these patients after they used the tablets. Taking UDE for 12 weeks had clinically significant effects on IPSS, serum hs-CRP, MDA and SOD activity in patients with BPH.

In rats, nettle root extract reduced prostate enlargement and improved tissue and biochemical marker results.

Aim of the study: This study investigated the effect of Urtica dioica roots etheric extract (UDEE) on oxidative stress, and urine obstruction with histopathological examinations of prostatic and renal tissues, and suggests computational methods as a complementary method, to make a hypothesis on the overall effect of UDEE in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry was utilised to characterise UDEE.BPH was induced in rats through daily subcutaneous injections of testosterone propionate.

Results: After four weeks, prostate weight, urine output, and biochemical markers were evaluated. UDEE treatment significantly reduced prostate enlargement, improved biochemical and histopathological characteristics, and regulated antioxidant activity levels. Phytosteroids stand out, acting by inhibiting 5α-reductase and aromatase. This study offers insight into BPH treatment and shows that this compound is safe for the kidneys compared with finasteride, without severe side effects.
