Hyssop — an old herb for coughs and bronchial problems?

Sources: 4 · Article: 6 617 characters

Henryk Różański notes that a recommendation from 1861 advised hyssop for asthma, whooping cough, and chronic bronchitis.

  • The herb was also listed in old pharmacopoeias from 1813–1826.
  • Hyssop oil was said to have expectorant effects, while the extract and syrup were described as being used for coughs and bronchitis.
  • For respiratory conditions, drinking an infusion every 3–4 hours was recommended; hyssop was also one of five ingredients in a mixture for catarrh of the respiratory tract.

Hyssop herb was listed in several old pharmacopoeias, including those from 1813–1826.

„Hyssop herb – Herba Hyssopi (hyssop) was included in the First Pharmacopoeia of the Kingdom of Poland (Pharmacopoeia Regni Poloniae) of 1817, the French Pharmacopoeia – Pharmacopoea Gallica of 1818, the Spanish Pharmacopoeia – Pharmacopoea Hispanica of 1826 (Summitates floridae = flowering shoots), the Prussian Pharmacopoeia – Pharmacopoea Borussica tertia of 1813, and the Swedish Pharmacopoeia – Pharmacopoea Svecica of 1826.”Ziele hyzopu – Herba Hyssopi (izopek) zamieszczono w I Farmakopei Królestwa Polskiego (Pharmacopoeia Regni Poloniae) z 1817 r., w Farmakopei Francuskiej – Pharmacopoea Gallica z 1818 r., w Farmakopei Hiszpańskiej – Pharmacopoea Hispanica 1826 r. (Summitates floridae = kwitnące pędy), w Farmakopei Pruskiej = Pharmacopoea Borussica tertia z 1813 r., w Farmakopei Szwedzkiej – Pharmacopoea Svecica z 1826 r.

In a recommendation cited from 1861, hyssop herb was recommended for asthma, whooping cough, and chronic bronchitis.

„Hyssop oil rubbed into the skin kills mites. Dr. Fr. Oesterlen (1861) recommends Herba Hyssopi for treating asthma, whooping cough, and chronic bronchitis. St. Hildegard described hyssop as a plant that strengthens the liver and cleanses the lungs. Hyssop – Hyssopus, Swarzędz, August 2009.”Olejek hyzopowy wcierany w skórę zabija roztocze. Dr Fr. Oesterlen (1861) Herba Hyssopi poleca w leczeniu astmy, krztuśca i chronicznego nieżytu oskrzeli. Św. Hildegarda opisała hyzop jako roślinę wzmacniająca wątrobę i oczyszczającą płuca. Hyzop – Hyssopus, Swarzędz, sierpień 2009 r.

Hyssop oil was said to have expectorant effects, while the extract and syrup were described as being used for coughs and bronchitis.

„Hyssop essential oil is rich in pinocamphone (about 50%) and pinene. Hyssop oil – Oleum Hyssopi is available abroad. Hyssop oil has expectorant, warming, bactericidal, pain-relieving, and bile-producing and bile-promoting effects. It can be taken as 5 drops several times a day, on juice, sugar, molasses, or honey.”Olejek eteryczny hyzopu jest bogaty w pinokamfen (ok. 50%) i pinen.

For respiratory conditions, drinking a hyssop infusion every 3–4 hours was described.

„For respiratory conditions, drink 1/2 cup of infusion every 3–4 hours, with honey or raspberry juice. Take powdered hyssop herb – Pulvis Hyssopi three times a day, half a teaspoon each time, preferably with raspberry juice or honey. Powdered hyssop herb can be mixed with honey.”Przy schorzeniach układu oddechowego 1/2 szklanki naparu co 3-4 godziny, z dodatkiem miodu lub soku malinowego.

In a mixture recommended for catarrh of the respiratory tract, hyssop makes up two of the five listed ingredients.

„Rx. Herbal mixture recommended for treating catarrh of the respiratory tract. Polypody herb 3 parts. Hyssop herb 2 parts. Thyme or wild thyme herb 2 parts. Licorice root 1 part. Elecampane root 2 parts. Mix the herbs. Use 1 tablespoon of the mixture per cup of boiling water; cover, leave for 20 minutes, then strain.”Rp. Mieszanka ziołowa zalecana w leczeniu nieżytów układu oddechowego. Ziele wielosiłu 3 cz. Ziele hyzopu 2 cz. Ziele tymianku lub macierzanki 2 cz. Korzeń lukrecji 1 cz. Korzeń omanu 2 cz. Zioła wymieszać. 1 łyżka mieszanki na szklankę wrzącej wody, przykryć, pozostawić na 20 minut, przecedzić.

We selected 2 studies with the best, positive results. This is a selection, not a full review of all research.

The review indicates that hyssop may have beneficial effects in COPD, but its clinical effectiveness requires further research.

Aim of the study: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the most common pulmonary diseases. Current treatment outcomes are not satisfactory and may cause adverse events such as cardiovascular complications. In this study, we aimed to discuss some effective medicinal herbs for the management of COPD.

Results: We found that Zataria multiflora, Thymus vulgaris L, Glycyrrhiza glabra L., Crocus sativus L., Nepeta bracteata Benth., and Hyssopus officinalis have beneficial effects on COPD due to properties including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity. In addition, considering asthma-COPD overlap (ACO), medicinal herbs including Cordia myxa, Adiantum capillus-veneris, Cinnamomum verum, Viola odorata, Borago officinalis, Linum usitatissimum, and Vitis vinifera L. were found to have useful effects on asthma. Considering the beneficial mechanisms of action described for these medicinal herbs, they could be used as complementary therapy for COPD and asthma. However, more experimental and clinical research should be done to confirm their clinical effects.

In a laboratory study, hyssop extract stimulated selected antiviral responses and reduced the levels of inflammatory cytokines.

Aim of the study: The medicinal benefits of hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis L.) have been recognized since ancient times for respiratory and digestive diseases, although the effects of hyssop on viral infections have not been mechanistically investigated. In this study, we examined whether hyssop extract activated antiviral innate immunity, which acts as a sentinel for the immune system, through activation of endosomal TLRs that recognize nucleic acids and their downstream signaling.

Results: After 24 h, 40 µg/ml of the extract significantly reduced cell viability to below 50% compared with the control and had a maximum effect on cellular function. The hyssop-treated PBMCs showed increased expression of endosomal TLR genes, as well as MyD88 and NF-κB. Moreover, the release of INF-α and β notably increased in the cell culture supernatant, while the levels of inflammatory cytokines decreased markedly (P < 0.05). The hyssop extract was capable of inducing antiviral innate immune responses and may therefore hold promise for antiviral drug strategies.
