What the authors write
Nettle extracts help with short- and long-term urination problems in people with benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Preparations made from nettle root and rhizome improve urination, bladder emptying and urinary control, and also reduce swelling and pain during urination.
Henryk Różański lists prostate enlargement as a reason to use nettle and says that its rhizomes may temporarily reduce male fertility.
The underground parts of nettle may reduce pain, swelling and inflammation of the prostate.
Jan Jaśkowski estimates that about half of men aged 51 and older have an enlarged prostate.

In a 12-week study, nettle root extract had a moderate effect on BPH symptoms and caused no reported adverse effects.
Aim of the study: Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a common urological disorder as men get older. BPH can cause uncomfortable urinary tract symptoms. Given the high incidence of the disease, further research is an undeniable necessity for its better management. In this research, the efficacy of Urtica Dioica root extract (UDE) on clinical and biochemical parameters were evaluated in this type of patients.
Results: UDE had a moderate effect on IPSS, a small effect on serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), a moderate to large effect on malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, and a moderate effect on superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. Overall, the effects of UDE on other parameters were negligible compared with the comparison group and were not significant. No side effects were observed in these patients after they used the tablets. Taking UDE for 12 weeks had clinically significant effects on IPSS, serum hs-CRP, MDA and SOD activity in patients with BPH.

In rats, nettle root extract reduced prostate enlargement and improved tissue and biochemical marker results.
Aim of the study: This study investigated the effect of Urtica dioica roots etheric extract (UDEE) on oxidative stress, and urine obstruction with histopathological examinations of prostatic and renal tissues, and suggests computational methods as a complementary method, to make a hypothesis on the overall effect of UDEE in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry was utilised to characterise UDEE.BPH was induced in rats through daily subcutaneous injections of testosterone propionate.
Results: After four weeks, prostate weight, urine output, and biochemical markers were evaluated. UDEE treatment significantly reduced prostate enlargement, improved biochemical and histopathological characteristics, and regulated antioxidant activity levels. Phytosteroids stand out, acting by inhibiting 5α-reductase and aromatase. This study offers insight into BPH treatment and shows that this compound is safe for the kidneys compared with finasteride, without severe side effects.
