Celery fruits were described as a diuretic and antispasmodic for the urinary tract.
„It is a typical diuretic and antispasmodic for the urinary tract. It has a warming effect and boosts libido, while also having a calming effect on the nerves. It dilates blood vessels, increases blood flow to the kidneys and sexual organs, and heightens the sensitivity of erogenous zones, increasing the sensation of sexual stimuli, much like lovage—Levisticum.”Jest to typowy środek moczopędny i rozkurczowy na drogi moczowe. Działa rozgrzewająco, wzmaga libido, choć równocześnie działa przeciwnerwicowo. Rozszerza naczynia krwionośne, wzmaga ukrwienie nerek i narządów płciowych, zwiększa wrażliwość stref erogennych, co nasila odczuwanie bodźców seksualnych, podobnie jak po zastosowaniu lubczyka – Levisticum.

Celery-root juice and raw salads are said to have a diuretic effect, but a weaker one than the fruits.
„Raw salad and juice made from celery root have detoxifying and diuretic effects, but are weaker than the fruit; however, they have stronger nutritional properties.
Celery-root juice nourishes and lightens the skin, removes acne marks and spots left by sun exposure or medication, and improves skin circulation and hydration.”Surówka i sok z korzenia selera działa odtruwająco i moczopędnie, ale słabiej niż owoc, mają natomiast silniejsze właściwości odżywcze.
Sok z korzenia selera działa odżywczo i wybielając na skórę, usuwa plamy potrądzikowe, po opalaniu i po lekach, poprawia krążenie i nawilżenie skóry.

Celery is classified among ingredients whose main effect is diuretic and which are used in blends for urinary tract problems.
„By mixing these herbs, we can make excellent preparations used to treat inflammation, infections, and stones in the urinary tract. Remember that Herniaria, pipsissewa (Herba Chimaphilae = Pirolae umbellatae), heather, pear leaf/bark, bearberry leaf, and bilberry leaf are primarily herbs that disinfect the kidneys, ureters, and bladder (urodesinficientia). Elder bark and root, juniper, restharrow, parsley, celery, and lovage are ingredients whose main effect is diuretic (hydragogum, diureticum).”Mieszając te zioła uzyskamy doskonałe preparaty stosowane w leczeniu stanów zapalnych, infekcji i kamicy układu moczowego. Pamiętajmy, że połonicznik, pomocnik (Herba Chimaphilae = Pirolae umbellatae), wrzos, liść/kora gruszy, liść mącznicy, liść borówki to przede wszystkim zioła odkażające nerki, moczowody i pęcherz moczowy (urodesinficientia). Kora i korzeń bzu czarnego, jałowiec, wilżyna, pietruszka, seler, czy lubczyk to surowce o działaniu głównie moczopędnym (hydragogum, diureticum).

Celery is most often eaten as leaves or root; the fruits are used less often.
„Celery is known primarily as a vegetable eaten as leaves (stalks) and root; celery fruit—Fructus Apii graveolentis—or celery oil—Oleum Apii graveolentis—is used less commonly. To obtain celery fruit, the plant must be allowed to flower and produce umbels with fruits in its second or third year of life.”Sellerin) znany jest przede wszystkim jako warzywo w postaci liści (naci) i korzenia, rzadziej rozpowszechnione jest użycie owocu selera – Fructus Apii graveolentis lub olejku selerowego – Oleum Apii graveolentis. Aby mieć owoc selera musimy pozwolić roślinie na zakwitnięcie i wydanie baldachów z owocami, w drugim lub trzecim roku życia.

Celery may mildly irritate the renal glomeruli, which is said to lead to a diuretic effect.
„Effects: mildly irritating the renal glomeruli → diuretic; reducing swelling → increasing the excretion of sodium chloride and uric acid; antispasmodic; calming the central nervous system; increasing blood flow to the sexual organs → possibly heightening sexual sensations and libido and intensifying orgasm; detoxifying by increasing urine production, and therefore used as a supportive treatment for rheumatism and arthritis; choleretic (moderately!); stimulating the secretion of gastric, pancreatic, and intestinal juices; preventing constipation; lightening the skin (combining oral and external use—an infusion to drink and apply as a wash!); supporting weight loss (→ by regulating bowel movements and encouraging the “passing” of water and sodium chloride).”Działanie: lekko drażniące kłębuszki nerkowe –> moczopędne; przeciwobrzękowe –> zwiększające wydalanie chlorku sodu i kwasu moczowego; rozkurczowe; uspokajające na ośrodkowy układ nerwowy; zwiększające ukrwienie narządów płciowych –> możliwe zwiększanie doznań seksualnych i popędu płciowego, pogłębianie orgazmu; odtruwające przez zwiększanie diurezy, stąd pomocniczo w reumatyzmie i artretyzmie; żółciopędne (umiarkowane!); pobudzające wydzielanie soku żołądkowego, trzustkowego i jelitowego; zapobiegające zaparciom; wybielające na skórę (skojarzenie preparatu doustnego i zewnętrznego – napar pity i do przemywania!); wzmagające odchudzanie (—> przez regulowanie wypróżnień, pobudzanie “odchodzenia” wody i chlorku sodu).

Furanocoumarins in celery may make the skin more sensitive to light, and celery preparations should not be given to women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
„Furanocoumarins may trigger skin photosensitivity. Celery products should not be given to pregnant women or during breastfeeding. By increasing blood flow to the abdominal cavity and sexual organs, celery preparations may affect the intensity of menstrual bleeding.”Furanokumaryny mogą uaktywniać fotosensybilizację skóry. Nie należy podawać przetworów z selera kobietom ciężarnym i w czasie laktacji. Poprzez zwiększanie ukrwienia jamy brzusznej i narządów płciowych preparaty selerowe mogą wpływać na intensywność krwawień miesiączkowych.

In laboratory studies, celery-fruit extract reduced the adherence of E. coli bacteria associated with urinary tract infections.
Aim of the study: Fruits from Apium graveolens (celery) are used traditionally in Persian and European medicine for the treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infections. No data are available on A.
Results: CSE exerts dose-dependent antiadhesive activity against UPEC strains NU14 and UTI89. CSE inhibited bacterial quorum sensing in a concentration-dependent manner. Pretreatment of animals with CSE for 4 or 7 days before transurethral infection with UPEC NU14 significantly reduced the bacterial load in bladder tissue. CSE is considered an antiadhesive extract, supporting its traditional use in phytotherapy for UTIs.

A compound with moderate inhibitory activity against the urea transporter was isolated from celery seeds, potentially providing a starting point for research into a diuretic.
Aim of the study: Celery (Apium graveolens L.) seeds are rich in carbohydrates and protein, and they are widely used in diuretic drugs among Uyghur doctors. However, the diuretic mechanism is still unclear.
Results: In the present study, we obtained different polar fractions by extracting and separating celery seed extract, characterized its polar fractions using UPLC-TOF-MS, and verified its action using an erythrocyte lysis model in vitro. We then found that isovaleric acid p-tolyl ester exhibited moderate activity (IC50 = 80.34 μM). Finally, its inhibitory effect on UT-B was investigated using molecular docking, a pharmacophore model, and molecular dynamics simulations. This study provides a new approach to developing novel diuretics.
