Jan Jaśkowski says that about 3 g of niacinamide a day may ease glaucoma symptoms after 12 weeks of supplementation.

  • Henryk Różański lists fir clubmoss as a remedy used for glaucoma; the infusion is prepared by pouring a cup of boiling water over a teaspoon of the herb.
  • He warns that an overdose of fir clubmoss can cause seizures, hallucinations, and coma leading to death.
  • He also says that atropine is contraindicated in glaucoma with a narrow drainage angle.

Niacinamide at a dose of about 3 g a day may ease glaucoma symptoms after 12 weeks of supplementation.

„Night blindness (poor vision in the dark): Vitamin A (e.g. liver, egg yolks). Glaucoma: Vitamin B3 in the form of niacinamide (does not cause the “flush” effect). Studies indicate that it may ease glaucoma symptoms after 12 weeks of supplementation at doses of around 3 g a day.”Kurza ślepota (słabe widzenie w ciemnościach): Witamina A (np. wątróbka, żółtka jaj). Jaskra: Witamina B3 w postaci niacynamidu (nie wywołuje efektu „flush”). Badania wskazują na łagodzenie objawów jaskry po 12 tygodniach suplementacji dawkami rzędu 3g dziennie.

Fir clubmoss is listed as a remedy used for glaucoma, and the preparation described is a teaspoon of the herb per cup of boiling water.

„Uses: Alzheimer's disease, glaucoma, atony of the intestines, ureters and urinary bladder, problems with association and memory, paresis and weakness of skeletal muscles, cancers (as supportive treatment), dry eye syndrome, deficiencies of digestive juices. External parasites, e.g. fleas, lice, mites: apply the tincture by rubbing it into the skin: pour 2 parts of 70% alcohol over 1 part of fresh or dried, crushed material, leave for 7 days, then filter. Use to spray or apply to areas affected by parasites. A water-alcohol extract of clubmoss herb is a good insecticide that may be used in gardening. The alcohol content must not exceed 6% to avoid damaging delicate parts of plants. A strong decoction of clubmoss herb also works (1 tablespoon of material per 100 ml of water; boil for 5 minutes, filter, and use for spraying).”Wskazania: choroba Alzheimera, jaskra, atonia jelit, moczowodów i pęcherza moczowego, zaburzenia kojarzenia i pamięci, niedowłady i osłabienie mięśni szkieletowych, nowotwory (wspomagająco), zespół suchego oka, niedobory soków trawiennych.

An overdose of clubmoss can cause severe symptoms, including seizures, hallucinations, and coma leading to death.

„An overdose is dangerous, as pharmacologists in the 19th century warned: vomiting, muscle tremors, followed by seizures, hallucinations, tachycardia, vomiting, constricted pupils, impaired eye accommodation, abdominal pain, coma leading to death (respiratory paralysis), and a drop in blood pressure.”Przedawkowanie jest niebezpieczne, o czym przestrzegali farmakolodzy z XIX wieku: wymioty, drżenie mięśni, potem drgawki, halucynacje, tachykardia, wymioty, zwężenie źrenic, zaburzenia akomodacji oka, ból brzucha, śpiączka kończąca się zgonem (porażenie oddechu), spadek ciśnienia krwi.
Henryk Różański

Atropine is contraindicated in glaucoma with a narrow drainage angle.

„Contraindications: paralytic intestinal obstruction, narrowing of the pylorus and bladder neck. Pregnancy, lactation. Prostate adenoma with urinary retention. Low blood pressure. Atonic constipation. Glaucoma with a narrow drainage angle. Hirschsprung's disease. Doses: Atropinum sulphuricum (sulfuricum), atropine sulfate, orally 0.2–1 mg as a single dose.”Przeciwwskazania: niedrożność porażenna jelit, zwężenie odźwiernika i szyjki pęcherza. Ciąża, laktacja. Gruczolak gruczołu krokowego z zastojem moczu. Niedociśnienie. Zaparcie atoniczne. Jaskra z wąskim kątem przesączania. Choroba Hirschsprunga. Dawki: Atropinum sulphuricum (sulfuricum), siarczan atropiny doustnie 0,2-1 mg jednorazowo.

A meta-analysis found that THC lowered intraocular pressure, but did not establish whether it saves vision.

Aim of the study: Over the past few decades, several studies have reported intraocular pressure (IOP)-lowering effects associated with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) compounds as an alternative or complementary agent to conventional glaucoma therapies. The purpose of this study is to generate pooled estimates of the IOP-lowering effects of THC.

Results: Five studies were included, comprising a total of 99 patients, 69 of whom were exposed to or received THC. Overall, the pooled peak percentage reduction in IOP after THC administration was 14.66% (95% CI: [3.38%, 25.93%]; p < 0.005). By route of THC delivery, the pooled peak percentage reduction in IOP was 33.27% (95% CI: [20.36%, 46.17%]; p < 0.0001) with the IV route. It was 10.65% (95% CI: [-7.60%, 28.89%]) with the oral route and 9.36% (95% CI: [-8.89%, 27.6%]) with the topical route. Four studies reported the peak percentage reduction in IOP after THC and control administration. In these studies, the pooled peak percentage reduction in IOP after THC was 6.88% (95% CI: [-9.56%, 23.33%]; p = 0.41) and was not significantly different from control. Our study generated literature-pooled estimates of the overall and route-stratified peak percentage reduction in IOP following THC administration. THC significantly reduced IOP, although the reduction was comparatively less significant than in the control group.

„If you experience blurred vision during high-dose niacin therapy, reduce or stop taking niacin and see your doctor. In a recent study, niacin (in the form of niacinamide) was shown to be effective in reducing the development of glaucoma by more than 90% in a strain of glaucoma-prone mice.[10] Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness worldwide. It is thought to be caused by a sequence of pathological events, including an increase in pressure inside the eye, which reduces blood flow to the eye and damages the eye's energy metabolism.”If during high-dose niacin therapy you experience blurred vision, reduce or stop taking the niacin and see your medical doctor.
