Compresses with undiluted vinegar on areas affected by varicose veins were described as a way to improve circulation and the elasticity of blood vessels.

„Compresses are effective because they strengthen blood vessels, increase their elasticity, and also improve blood circulation in the lower limbs. Compresses applied regularly twice a week are the most effective. They can also be applied more often if the skin tolerates the vinegar well.”Okłady są skuteczne, ponieważ wzmacniają naczynia krwionośne, zwiększają ich elastyczność, a także poprawiają krążenie krwi w kończynach dolnych. Najbardziej skuteczne są okłady robione regularnie 2 razy w tygodniu. Można je również robić częściej, jeśli skóra dobrze toleruje ocet.

A meta-analysis found that a preparation containing butcher’s broom and other ingredients reduced the severity of pain, cramps, feelings of heaviness, and swelling in chronic venous insufficiency.

Aim of the study: Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) of the lower limbs is a major cause of morbidity and varicose veins affect 20% to 60% of adults in the western world. The treatment of patients with CVI attempts to reduce both clinical symptoms and the development of chronic venous disease.

Results: On a 4 point symptom severity scale, where 0 corresponds to no symptoms and 3 to severe symptoms, Cyclo 3 Fort significantly reduces the severity of pain by 0.44 (0.12) points; cramps 0.26 (0.08), heaviness 0.53 (0.11), and paraesthesia 0.29 (0.10) compared to placebo. There is also a significant reduction in venous capacity of 0.70 (0.19) ml/100 ml with Cyclo 3 Fort compared to placebo. We also found reductions in the severity of oedema 0.43 (0.20) points, and decreases in calf and ankle circumference, 0.73 (0.37) cms and 1.17 (0.83) cm, respectively, among patients treated with Cyclo 3 Fort compared to placebo which were not statistically significant. Despite questions surrounding the variability of data quality and sample size of some of the studies, we conclude that in patients with CVI Cyclo 3 Fort significantly reduces the severity of the symptoms compared to placebo.

A review found that red vine leaf extract improved some symptoms and signs of chronic venous insufficiency.

Aim of the study: Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is common in adults. Some complications include skin changes, edema, heavy legs, muscle cramps, pain, and varicose veins. In traditional medicine, red vine leaf extract (AS 195) has been used to cure the symptoms of CVI. This systematic review was aimed to assess the effects of AS 195 in patients with CVI.

Results: From the 56 studies, 5 trials were selected according to our inclusion criteria. Red vine leaf extract significantly improved numbers of outcomes (lower leg volume, calf and ankle circumference, tired, heavy legs, tingling sensation, pain, the sensation of tension in the legs, cutaneous microcirculation, and transcutaneous oxygen pressure) in only some trials. The tolerability for red vine leaf extract was reported good or satisfactory. Red vine leaf extract had a beneficial therapeutic role in patients with CVI. Further high-quality trials are required to be carried out to provide strong evidence.

A review of five clinical trials found that horse chestnut seed extract reduced leg swelling and relieved pain, feelings of heaviness, and itching.

Aim of the study: Extracts from the seed of the horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum L.) have traditionally been used to treat patients with chronic venous insufficiency and to alleviate its associated symptoms, including lower leg swelling. The efficacy of preparations that contain horse chestnut seed extract (HCSE) is believed to be due largely to an inhibitory effect on the catalytic breakdown of capillary wall proteoglycans.

Results: The efficacy of preparations that contain horse chestnut seed extract (HCSE) is believed to be due largely to an inhibitory effect on the catalytic breakdown of capillary wall proteoglycans. Aesculaforce is a fresh plant HCSE that is available as an oral tincture, as tablets (20 mg or 50 mg), and as topical gel. Four clinical trials in patients with chronic venous insufficiency and 1 study in patients with varicose veins demonstrated the effectiveness of these preparations through the objective measure of reduction in lower leg edema and the subjective alleviation of leg pain, heaviness, and itching. Safe, well tolerated, and acceptable to patients, the fresh plant HCSE preparation Aesculaforce offers a real alternative in the treatment of patients with mild to moderate venous insufficiency.

A review described that red vine leaf extract reduced swelling and relieved feelings of tightness and heaviness, tingling, and leg pain.

Aim of the study: Background: Chronic Venous Disorders or Diseases (CVD) of the lower extremities are a common finding affecting almost 90 % of an adult population. CVD includes varicose veins with a prevalence of approx.

Results: AS195 was well tolerated in studies and in everyday therapy. There are no known interactions with other medications. In the later stages, it can be used in combination with compression, complementing the beneficial haemodynamic effects of compression at a cellular level. AS195 is an addition to compression and closes a therapeutic gap especially in patients, who cannot use compression stockings, but still require CVD therapy.

A review indicated that Pycnogenol may reduce leg swelling in chronic venous insufficiency and support the healing of venous ulcers.

Aim of the study: The present review provides an update of the biological profile of Pycnogenol in the light of its use in the treatment of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) and related venous disorders such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), post-thrombotic syndrome, long haul air-travel-related leg oedema, venous ulcers and acute haemorrhoids. Pycnogenol is a French maritime pine bark extract produced from the outer bark of Pinus pinaster Ait.

Results: atlantica. Its strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and vasodilator activities, antithrombotic effects and collagen stabilizing properties make it uniquely able to target the multi facet pathophysiology of CVI and related venous disorders. Clinical studies have shown that it can reduce oedema of the legs in CVI, reduce the incidence of deep venous thrombosis during long haul flights and enhance the healing of venous ulcers and haemorrhoidal episodes by topical application and/or oral administration. This review highlights clinical research findings on the safety, compliance and efficacy of Pycnogenol, including its use in combination products.
