Herbs and plantsSweet clover — the herb that led to a blood-thinning medicine?
Sources: 3 · Article: 5 006 characters
Yes, sweet clover can reduce blood clotting, but not always.
- This effect depends on the coumarin and dicoumarol content and on how the plant is dried.
- When the plant is dried quickly, dicoumarol does not form, so the raw material has no anticoagulant effect.
- Long-term use or an overdose can lead to bleeding.

Dicoumarol, which forms during some drying methods, has an anticoagulant effect. When the plant is dried quickly, dicoumarol does not form, and sweet clover has no anticoagulant effect.

When the plant is dried at room temperature in high humidity and with little airflow, bacteria may convert some of the coumarin into dicoumarol (used in medicine), which has an anticoagulant effect. When the plant is dried quickly, dicoumarol does not form, and the raw material has no anticoagulant effect.”0,2-0,35%

The strength of sweet clover’s anticoagulant effect depends on its coumarin and dicoumarol content and on how the plant is dried.
„The strength of sweet clover’s anticoagulant effect depends on its coumarin and dicoumarol content and on how the plant is dried. Sweet clover collected from sunny, dry sites contains more coumarin than plants growing in damp soil. After flowering, the coumarin content of the raw material falls by 60%, to a level of about”Siła działania przeciwzakrzepowego nostrzyka zależy od zawartości kumaryny i dikumarolu oraz od sposobu suszenia nostrzyka. Nostrzyk zebrany ze stanowisk słonecznych i suchych zawiera więcej kumaryny niż ten rosnący w wilgotnej ziemi. Po przekwitnięciu spada zawartość kumaryn w surowcu o 60%, do poziomu ok.

An overdose of sweet clover or using it for too long can cause bleeding into tissues.
„An overdose of sweet clover or using it for too long causes bleeding into tissues, nausea, blood in the urine, abdominal pain, dizziness, drowsiness, and vascular purpura. In excessive doses, it also damages the kidneys and liver.
In cases of poisoning, vitamin K, vitamin C, and rutosides are given. A blood transfusion and liver-protective medicines may sometimes be necessary.”Nostrzyk przedawkowany i stosowany zbyt długo powoduje krwawienia śródtkankowe, wywołuje nudności, krwiomocz, bóle brzucha, zawroty głowy, ospałość, plamice naczyniowe. W nadmiernej dawce uszkadza też nerki i wątrobę.
W razie zatrucia podaje się witaminę K, C, rutozydy, niekiedy konieczne jest przetoczenie krwi, środki osłaniające wątrobę.

Sweet clover extracts are used to help prevent thrombosis.
„Sweet clover herb extracts are used to treat phlebitis and venous and lymphatic congestion, to help prevent thrombosis, for fragile blood vessels, and to treat varicose veins in the lower limbs and hemorrhoids. Sweet clover has a calming effect and relaxes the smooth muscles of the digestive, urinary, and respiratory systems.”Wyciągi z ziela nostrzyka mają zastosowanie w leczeniu zapalenia żył, zastojów żylnych i limfatycznych, w profilaktyce zakrzepicy, w łamliwości naczyń krwionośnych, w leczeniu żylaków kończyn dolnych i hemoroidów. Nostrzyk wywiera działanie uspokajające i rozkurczowe na mięśnie gładkie przewodu pokarmowego, układu wydalniczego i oddechowego.

A review reports that dicoumarol from moldy sweet clover caused hemorrhagic disease in cattle.
Aim of the study: The history of the traditional anticoagulants is marked by both perseverance and serendipity. The anticoagulant effect of heparin was discovered by McLean in 1915, while he was searching for a procoagulant in dog liver.
Results: Heparins and coumarins (i.e.: warfarin, phenprocoumon, acenocoumarol) have been the mainstay of anticoagulant therapy for more than 60 years. Over the past decades, the drug discovery paradigm has shifted toward rational design following a target-based approach, in which specific proteins, or "targets", are chosen on current understandings of pathophysiology, small molecules that inhibit the target's activity may be identified by high-throughput screening and, in selected cases, these new molecules can be developed further as drugs. Despite the application of rational design, serendipity has still played a significant role in some of the new discoveries.

„However, based on my previous studies, I knew that blood test results could only be considered reliable one month after the initial infection. Therefore, I decided to begin taking vitamin C orally at 6 grams daily and planned to recheck my Lyme status later. As time passed and I remained symptom-free, I unfortunately forgot to recheck my blood parameters after the recommended one-month period. It wasn't until my wife reminded me that I finally had my blood retested on August 3, 2010. This time, my markers showed 4.08/1 and were highly positive for Lyme disease.”However, based on my previous studies, I knew that blood test results could only be considered reliable one month after the initial infection.
