Henryk Różański notes that black locust flowers are used as food, to make infusions, and to make cosmetics.
- They can be fried in batter or used to make a sweet filling, syrup, or infusion.
- Flower toners are used to care for dry, sensitive skin with dilated blood vessels or rosacea.
- The infusion can be drunk or applied externally.
- Black locust flower can also be an ingredient in an herbal blend that strengthens blood vessels and improves peripheral circulation.
What the authors write

Black locust flower extract showed the ability to neutralize free radicals in laboratory tests.
Aim of the study: Robinia pseudoacacia flowers have attracted much attention because of numerous bioactivities. In this study, its extract showed the potential scavenging ability for 2,2'-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonate) and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl free radicals.
Results: In order to deeply understand the antioxidant mechanism of kaempferol, the thermodynamics, frontier molecular orbital, and kinetics of scavenging free radicals were investigated by density functional theory. The results showed that 4'-OH in kaempferol was the most active group, which can scavenge free radicals by hydrogen atom transfer in non-polar solvents and activate 3-OH to generate double hydrogen atom transfer in the gas phase. But in polar solvents, it was more inclined to clear radicals through single electron transfer and proton transfer. The kinetic result showed that kaempferol needed 9.17 kcal/mol of activation energy to scavenge free radicals.

Fermentation of black locust flower extract increased its antioxidant activity in a laboratory study.
Aim of the study: Robinia pseudoacacia flower is a natural product with many biological activities, including antioxidation. To further develop its antioxidation, the extract was fermented by Aspergillus niger FFCC 3112 in the medium with carbon to nitrogen ratio of 1.4:1 and initial pH of 4.2 for 3.5 days to form the best antioxidant activity of the fermentation product by strain screening, single factor optimization, and response surface methodology.
Results: Further analysis, isolation and activity determination showed that a main chemical component, kaempferol-3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→6)-β-D-galactopyranosyl-7-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside, in the extract was completely hydrolyzed to kaempferol-7-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside and kaempferol with better antioxidant activity through biotransformation, which was the basis for improving the antioxidant activity of fermentation products. Moreover, the mechanism of antioxidant and the contribution of phenolic hydroxyl groups were investigated by density functional theory. The result indicated that the antioxidant capacity of kaempferol-7-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside and kaempferol increased with the increase of solvent polarity. In high-polarity solvents, they mainly scavenge free radicals through single electron transfer followed by proton transfer.

In a study in rabbits, black locust polysaccharides strengthened the immune response to a vaccine and improved survival after infection.
Aim of the study: Robinia pseudoacacia flower, a common component in traditional Chinese medicine, has long been well-known for its high pharmaceutical value. This study aimed to assess the immunopotentiating effects of Taishan Robinia Pseudoacacia polysaccharides (TRPPS) in rabbits inoculated with a rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV) inactivated vaccine.
Results: In addition, sera were prepared and analyzed to determine the overall antibody titer and the level of IL-2, a cytokine commonly used as an indicator of immune activity. The various TRPPS-supplemented vaccines were shown to be more effective in enhancing the immune functions of the inoculated rabbits compared to their polysaccharide-free counterpart, with 200 mg/mL of TRPPS exhibiting the most pronounced benefits that were comparable to those of propolis. In addition, the TRPPS-supplemented RHDV inactivated vaccines could significantly improve the survival rates of the immunized rabbits against RHDV infection. Our studies offered convincing experimental evidence for the development of TRPPS as a new type of plant-derived immunopotentiator.

In cell studies and in mice, a complex of black locust and reishi extracts reduced oxidative stress, inflammation, and markers of kidney damage.
Aim of the study: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is characterized by functional and structural abnormalities, with its progression strongly influenced by oxidative stress and inflammatory responses, ultimately leading to renal fibrosis. This study aimed to investigate the effects of a Ganoderma lucidum and Robinia pseudoacacia flower extract complex (NEPROBIN) through in vitro and in vivo experiments.
Results: Markers of oxidative stress and kidney damage were notably lower in the kidneys of NEPROBIN-treated mice. Furthermore, NEPROBIN effectively mitigated the AD-induced inflammatory response in the kidneys, with a marked reduction in cytokine and chemokine expression. This decrease in inflammation was associated with a significant reduction in tubulointerstitial fibrosis. Overall, NEPROBIN alleviated renal damage and fibrosis by directly targeting renal oxidative stress and inflammation, highlighting its potential as a therapeutic agent for CKD.
